Patrick Leonard stating the hard truth "you cannot longer make it in online poker"
Patrick leonard, one of the best online mtt players sayed a couple of day ago this reality, literally stated on the podc
100k average pays some of the bills in many locations
100k ave I'd say lets 4-5 person single income families live quite comfortable on many 3rd world countries, just maybe not enough to buy a nice house, but still enough to buy smth cheaper away from the trendy cities/areas on said countries (bare in mind that many guys on 3rd world countries very often will not pay taxes from online poker winnings hence it's 100k net )
I think gto wizard posted the hands he analized when Mtt was taken place, he only analized a couple of hands before the mtt, and late that night after the mtt ended. I don´t like nacho as a player or person but i think its pretty obvius he wasnt cheating. Alot of people are mad only because he is part of the team pro, maybe just for jealously or wanting to see consecuences

100k (net) is still a lot, there are very few locations in the world where you would struggle to support a family with this income.
Also what is the definition of 3rd world nowadays? If you check some agreed on lists of 3rd world countries, you would live comfortable on 10k year there.
Personally im from northern eu and know 0 people who make 100k year as a salaryman. Most make around 20-40k and live good lives, own condo or house etc.

Im from Argentina and here people make like 9k a year ( a little bit more than the regular employee salary),only wealthy people will make 20k+

This is crazy. Must be Estonia or Latvia, right? I have friends here in Sweden that make $100k/y three years into their programming careers.

Yea.
Im sure there are people in IT making that here too, i just meant who i personally know working 9-5.
Really my point was that 100k still goes a long way, people just measure it based on high cost US cities.
In 90% of the world you will be ballin.
if you earn $60k/y pre tax in sweden you are in the 90% percentile so the 3 year programmers are exceptions

i didn't mean to convey that it's the norm, i just happen to know a bunch of people making 100k+/year doing office work and whatnot. i also live in the second largest city in the country, which obviously is a big factor.
I think it is tougher but the title saying cannot make it is inaccurate.

As I said 100k net lets u live very comfortable for up to 4-5 persons single income family on lets say every most expensive city in LATAM (BsAs, Sao Paulo or Rio, MX City, Bogotá), but it won´t be enough to be ballin or own a super nice place on very trendy areas within the cities (u'll still be able to buy smth not super fancy outside the cities and take all the family to Europe in Economy)
100k in the US is garbage these days - that's like 8500/mo pre tax, maybe 7k/mo post tax. Now if you're single ,rent with your buddies, live some super low level lifestyle fine, but if you're raising a family on this alone you won't make it. Any decent sized home/apartment for a family is going to run at least 2500/mo given where the market is, now you have to survive on 4500/mo for everything else. I think pre COVID an argument could be made but post COVID with the heavy inflation 150k+ is more the target.
You guys must have very expensive tastes, if you think that $100K/year is not enough to raise a family.
The gatekeepers are there waiting for people to replace them, don’t let pads fool you…
I think making 75-100k on average will always be possible to a decent/good player, but for most that won't pay the bills if you're supporting a family. It's also just a job that's highly labor intensive, has no scalability, and requires sometimes large sums of money to fund. Not really a great business model but if your in your 20s traveling the world or a retiree looking for a side income it works.
50k with freedom is a lot better than 30k after tax from real work always being tired and out of free time.

Considering that's about 2.5x average income I'd argue most Americans would love to make what you consider ''garbage'' wage.

in northern sweden i dont know a single person that makes even remotely close to what i do as a pokerplayer, the only guys that are doing more than me are doing tons more due to really successful businesses but no salary man is close to making $200k a year, or $100k for that matter. regular Banking/coding gigs in Sthlm is well below $10k a month for example, closer to 7 than 10 for sure, my friend was one of those, he started his own business and takes on clients instead to make more.
Sure you can find anecdotes here and there with ppl making heaps, but general guidelines in northern sweden is if you are making above $6k a month you are a top tier salaryman, ppl are superhappy with $5k a month with car benefit etc....

The national average is 60k/yr - the average monthly mortgage payment is 2200/mo. 60k post tax is probably around 45-50k, so roughly 4k/mo income. Take away 2200 off of 4k and you're left with 1800 - 0% chance you can survive on this for a family. Most families are dual income - 60k is fine if you're single with no kids living a low level lifestyle but unrealistic for a family.
Are you currently raising a family? If you aren't how would you know the costs involved when everything has skyrocketed post COVID in the US.
I'm currently raising a family in Canada. Weaker dollar, higher cost of living and more expensive real estate in most of the country. I know the cost involved and you're still wrong. In most of the US you'll absolutely be able to raise a family on 100k.

We just went from 100k to 60k......
OP should ask a mod to correct the title from "you cannot longer" to 'you can no longer'.
Pads is definitely the kind of guy who would say this to stop potential professionals from entering online poker.

Obviously it depends where one is located, but if you live in western Canada, it simply is not. Support yourself and maybe your partner, sure. But good luck buying a house and having much in the way of disposable income. The median household income is far in excess of $100k in this part of the world. The idea of raising say 2 children and having a household income of $100k would be pretty bleak. Both parents working at McDonalds for minimum wage ($17.40) is ~$70k household income, and their likely on food stamps.

You're right but it's also the worst example possible. Vancouver and surrounding areas have some of the most expensive real estate ever. Hell people making 200k there don't live a comfortable life.
The idea that 100k in most US states/cities is ''garbage wage'' is just laughable. Sure if you live in the middle of LA it's nothing. It's also not representative of all of America.
why can't a poker pros wife work just like a mcdonalds employees wife? comparing one salary to two makes little to no sense
