Ofc, rick's is the correct fix.
fine, more for me
I have a fairly large Jimi poster that I am think of getting framed. How stupid is it for the framing to cost more than the poster?

framing is a racket, it's insane
if you're ok with a less than perfect job and/or putting in some work on your own, go to thrift shops and look at the art, decent chance one of those framed paintings for $2 has a frame that fits your poster and you can just discard the art and keep the frame

Its this poster. I think it's roughly 60 by 40... I don't have it the poster as it's supposed to be a birthday gift....It's huge, and why the framing estimate is high.

it's not stupid... it's just the way it go's. I've had artwork frame that run into 600-1000 range just for the framing.
that being said, I have found that I can shop around online and find custom framing that is in the 50-150 range if I am willing to do it myself and I dont need matte.
with framing, size matters. you are probably looking at 400-700 for a good frame with matte and UV plexi for a 40"x60" that someone else builds for you... and that sucks because I am sure that is just a lithograph and not original art.
this is a good place for self framing... https://www.pictureframes.com/
remember, you'll need acid free backing and UV plexi... and shipping.
I took some original Disney Attraction posters to the framer during the 1990's and they ran me 600$ each for 50x70 with museum quality preservation framing... and I had 10 of them to frame.
this is why a VAST majority of my artwork is in flatfiles and not hang in on the walls. I have a Jimi (john van hamersveld) poster also that has never been framed.
schu, how do you view your stored art?
pics of the system?
That's a complicated question... I do rotate my artwork sometimes so that the hanging art changes once or twice a year, but some art is permanently hangingon the walls.
The rest are stored in a few forms in a spare room. Some are sitting in frames, some are in portfolios but a vast majority is in archive quality acid free corrugated flatfiles with removable lids and a drop front. Each file will hold approximately 80-120 pieces of art and I have 7 of them.
This was the most economical solution that I could source without getting a metal five drawer roller flat file, but at this point, its about break even in terms of cost in comparison because I have amassed so many pieces.
I dont look at them often because its a pain in the arse to do so... but when I do go thru them I get that same 'oh hell yes' feeling I had when I saw them in person for the first time because these aren't offset lithograph, they are screen printed.
All my original paintings and illustrations remain permanently on my wall.

Schu, I knew you'd be great for this. I kind of want to send this to you.
No shipping. Thoughts on glass vs plexi?
Backing is also an issue.
I love that I am so involved in a gift.
Nevermind, can I please get Schu's the bunker code I will bring cigars.
Get UV plexi... never use glass. For backing, use acid free foam core.
I plugged in your size on a couple of frames on the website I provided and I get a roughly 250$ average without shipping, that's about right.

how funny...my brother has hung that poster in three different houses over the past couple of decades
always admired it

guessing from the Pinnacle series?
Shepard Fairey | Obey Giant ran a commerative serigraph many years ago, wish i had one
this link shares a bit of the history and how it became inspiration for the Andre mashup
No, I have two of the Original Van Hamersveld posters... I met John in 1983 when I was designing for a garment manufacturer and we developed a line for Him and Bruce Brown based on The Endless Summer graphic. I had an original endless summer screen print but sold it for a fair bit of money... I also have an original Van Hammerveld 1984 summer Olympics poster because that was the period in which we developed art for him.
This is the Jimi poster I wish I had...

is a beautiful martin sharp but not of the era
period concert posters just hit different
