Home ownership
Maybe I missed a thread similar to this, but that's ok. I have been in my home for 10 years now, and there are some things I wasn't prepared for or aware of as a homeowner. I am not scared to admit them if it helps someone else, and please share any stories you have about things you didn't know when owning a home for the first time, whether they be small or large, costly or not.
I will start with not knowing about changing the furnace filter until the a/c stopped working and I had to spend $300 on a new blower motor. Also, I knew nothing of cleaning my gutters, until one became clogged, held water, froze, and had the weight pull it down. Replacing the gutters was another $1000. I'm sure I'll think of other things but those are the 2 that stand out the most at the moment.
ITT we talk about home ownership, and things that aren't always obvious but need to be done to save on maintenance and repairs.
It's an easy google, but yes. It's so that the floor is heated. So walking on it barefoot when the floor would be cold otherwise.
I realize your confusion.
so then... it's heating that is under the floor?
in the west, it is rare to see under floor heating... most everything is attic heating.
It's heating elements installed between the slab/subfloor and the tile that warms the tile up when you turn it on so the tile feels oh so good on your bare feet.
It's not really necessary when you have a vent right there. My bathroom floor only gets really cold when the heat is off.
If the heat is on, either the floor is warm because of the heat or maybe the ducting runs through the floor. Not really sure.

Definitely not necessary, but it depends on the situation (probably not this one). Mark mentioned a slab, which likely means you don't have floor vents, so a cold floor is likely.

It really depends on what type of flooring is going in. Many tiles are very cold. As someone who used to have heated floor in bathroom at my old place but doesn't in my new one, I think it's a huge quality of life improvement
If we ever build a new house, I am very intrigued by in-floor, hydronic, radiant heating. I don't think I'd want to retrofit it, though.
What Gus said I think. Never noticed the floor being cold, and being old, I'm up, walking across it in the middle of the night.
We're going to look at moving the vent under the window, where the tub used to be. However, I'm pretty sure the floor joists run along the length of the bathroom, so that would be a pretty big undertaking.
Not the end of the world if the vent stays in the middle IMO. Might even make the heat better, being centrally located.
Thanks everyone for their interest and ideas, though. I appreciate the thoughts.
Sounds like tomorrow is plumber guy to move the shower controls etc.
I kinda ranted a bit in my travel blog, but WTF HD? It's taken them now four days to get a package from Aurora to the Broomfield store.
To be fair, if it's in far SE Aurora, that could be on the order of 35-40 miles.
On a nicer front, I too like the stone wall.
I, too, love the stone wall, but I can not be the only one thinking about what my friends and I would have done to one of those in HS with a case of Schlitz and a couple of wire-cutters.
They had that kind of wall at the last storage facility I rented.
I recommend checking in with some women while making aesthetic choices.
As mentioned earlier, the last order from HD has gotten screwed up. It allegedly got to Aurora on the 15th, but they're having trouble getting it the last 20 miles to the Broomfield store.
When the status changed to "Delayed" without further explanation, I called HD customer service. Spencer (not his real name, but that's what I got) looked around and said that UPS had delivered it to the store the morning before. I never got notified.
Since I had time Tuesday morning, went up there to pick it up. After telling her the above, person at the desk called the dock, who said it's not there.
OK, well, I'm going out of town. When it turns up, make a note that I can't get it til next week.
Got to Wichita this afternoon. Had time, so re-called. Talked to somebody whose name I didn't catch and explained the situation. She said she'd call the store to figure it out. She needed ot put me on hold. After a while she came back and said they're still talking, could I hold some more? Sure.
After a while, the call dropped. Well, ****, that happens.
Called back and got Maurice. Explained the situation, he was going to do the same call-the-store. After a little while, the call ended and I got the opportunity to answer a short, three-question survey about my experience, along with the chance to leave a voice message.
It did not go well for them.
On the drive over, it occurred to me that I might find some while out. When going through some other town, stopped in, found the right brand, but not the color I needed. Same as the local HD.
Sigh.
Also, I asked the GC to send a picture and a sentence at the end of each to let me know what happened. Crickets. IDK if they weren't in, or just forgot.
I'm quite upset.
Aurora's not that far from Broomfield and there's a million great ethnic restaurants there, it's worth the trip.
Maybe?

In fact, that's one of the things I said when I was talking with the CSR. Something like, "Christ, if it's going to take you five days to get a package from Aurora to Broomfield, just call me and I'll come get it."
Got back from dinner last night and got text/email messages that my order is ready at the store. It's amazing what one can find when one bothers to look.
Of course, it will be the wrong stuff, or something totally unrelated, when I get there and pick it up.
I had a bad experience with that sort of inter-HD shipping a few years ago and have avoided it ever since. When we picked our tile for our shower in the St. Louis house I drove to three different HD's around town to get enough tile for the job.
Lowe's messed up in my favor last year. Ordered about $1,000 worth of stuff. They delivered then online said they lost it and shipped the same order again, no charge. I called and told them what happened and they said, "Keep it." Fortunately, I had a use for it all. Oops.
Some progress while I was gone.
Seems like shower is plumbed, and tub stuff stopped at floor level.
Got home last night, the closet light and downstairs bathroom lights were left on. This bothers me more than it probably should.
I hope they flushed afterward and only tried on your old clothes that don't fit you anymore. And didn't find your hidden safe 😉
Did not. That could also have been my neighbor who checks on my house when I'm gone, so I can't blame the guys 100%.
Safe not hidden, in plain view in the closet where my day-to-day clothes now are. Now that I moved it, I kinda like it there vs in the main closet previously.
What bothers me is the new plate extended away from the shower area.
The old door opening for the closet is now smaller.
Is the plan to just go back with a shower and tub or eliminate the tub and make the shower bigger?

Yeah, a little bigger shower. Tub out, build in some kind of storage or something to take up some of that space.
You're right about the closet door. Going to leave it an opening instead of have a door on it, but it will be narrow.
