Fun Player's Guide to the Galaxy

Fun Player's Guide to the Galaxy

Well let's see.... I'm here, but not quite sure what I'm doing here.
I mean I don't feel drunk.

I thought 7/9 would be a fitting date to mark the start point of whatever this will be. 79 being my favorite hand and all. Yes one thing you should know about fun players is that we all have our favorite hand. Usually it ties back to some big pot you won from playing badly and running godly. For me that hand is 79

I guess the purpose of this thread is to provide me an outlet to post random updates related to poker.

I haven't played a whole lot in recent years due to time constraints. Live poker is just so time consuming. But I have managed to fit in 1 or 2 tourneys a year and the occassional cash session once a month or so. Not much to write home about. I min cashed some $1100 event last summer and am up a fair amount in the limited cash I've played.

I also play some online, but options for Americans are pretty crappy. I mostly play 100NL 6 max on ignition and some of their tourneys once in awhile. I recently checked out Bet Online and have dabbled in 50NL 6max. The player pool is super small. There seems to be like maybe 10 regs and a handful of random weaker players. At peak hrs there are maybe 4 tables going. I play without a HUD so I'm only 1 or 2 tabling anyways.

I plan on playing the Monster Stack again next year, but will also schedule time so I can play the ME as well. It would be nice to subsidize that with my cash play. So I guess the main goal/challenge is to make $11,500 within about 150hrs of play.
And the side quest will be to make a good showing in the tourneys.

As for where my game is at: Though I've played relatively little, I've actually studied quite a bit. My thoughts on the game in both cash and tournaments has changed quite dramatically over the last few years. I feel my tournament fundamentals have become more solid, but I still find myself Selbsting off my stack near every money bubble. This is one thing I've never bothered to fix. I think it's time now to stop that and see what it does for my results.

For this month I can probably fit in one cash session and I will also be playing a $1650 at the end of the month.

For cash I typically play 2/5 and 5/10.

I guess I can close out with a HH.
One hand I played on my recent Vegas trip.

when did you get a coach, what made you consider that

how does it work? you feel the gains are really tangible?

are you playing full time again or is this still a hobby?

"When did you get a coach, what made you consider that?"

Towards the end of the summer last year I started playing again a few sessions live and mostly online.

I played a bunch of 10nl on ACR and did quite well and tried 25nl and didn't do so hot.
Also was trying out 50nl and 100nl on Ignition and was doing ok but didn't feel like I was winning easily as I should for what is such a soft pool.

I saw what a lot of the players were doing and realized I was out of my element having been away from the game for too long. I was lost in too many spots and my results showed.

I resisted the idea of coaching for a long time due to ego and thinking that it was more commendable to make it on my own. But after realizing that was silly I decided to give it a shot.

I ended up purchasing coaching from a few different individuals. I did 5-6 session packages that they offered.

I would say on those were helpful and I got the value for what I paid, but it wasn't enough. I still needed a ton of work on my game along w/ my obvious mental game weakness. I needed something more comprehensive, intensive, long term and personal.

Eventually I lucked my way into finding a really good fit for a longer term arrangement. I'm not able to go into too much detail, but basically we meet for an hour every week to talk through hands and concepts, I also send hand histories daily to get feedback and he also reviews a recorded session of me playing in which he provides me a detailed write up that I go through.

All I'll say is he opened my eyes to a lot of things I would likely have never figured out on my own.

And if you look at my 100nl graph from the lowest point in the graph my first session was basically right around that point.
And yeah I've ran good at 200nl, but I don't think it's a coincidence that the results have also been what they are.

"How does it work? you feel the gains are really tangible?"
Everyone does it a little differently so it depends on who you hire.
It can be something as simple as paying for a single session for a database analysis, to hand history reviews, play and explains, talking you through a theoretical concept, all kinds of things.

Most have an hourly rate and you can book single sessions and there is often some sort of discounted rate if you book multiples.

All of my sessions have been either via Discord call or Google Meet w/ screen sharing.

Yes the gains are tangible. I can clearly see the mistakes I was making before and the difference made after I fixed them.

"Are you playing full time again or is this still a hobby?"

No, there is no way I would ever play full time given the option. I have a decent job I'm thankful to have and plan to do that as long as I can.

So yes poker will always remain a hobby, albeit one I take very seriously and have invested a lot of time, money and energy into trying to be the best I can be at it.

woah, blown away by your thoughtful response, thanks

Spyu, are you playing all this online volume at work and when your significant other is watching trash tv? If I lived within driving distance of the East Bay, I would only play at Oaks, Grand, Palace, those games look so sick. Nice work either way, you always have the best content on the deuce over the years.

Nah, I play at night usually from around 10p.m. to 1 or 2a.m.

I think the Grand is far from me. I heard of the Palace, but seems like they only have action on Friday nights. I may check it out one of these days.

Pretty crazy when I saw the result. I was just trying to get like Q high and J high spades and diamonds to fold which is why I didn't think it made sense to size big on the river as I didn't expect some Ace highs or any pairs to fold.

Dude folded QQ
