1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll manageme
I'm rolling in here for the first time, trying to improve my poker game and love that this thread started as a bankroll question/goal and has become a life journal of sorts? Idk. Cool. Keep it up! As someone trying to start winning consistently I am curious how the bankroll turned out!

Bankroll is doing really well, mostly invested now so the money works for me while I’m not working and some cash to play and pay my expenses. I could retire as long as I kept living frugally but that would be boring. I’m not multimillionaire-rich like Doug Polk but I’m very comfortable and overrolled or well rolled for everything I play up to 50/100 plo to give you a sense.
I don’t want to go into more detail because money is a sensitive subject. But it’s safe to say I’ve made it in poker and life.
Haven’t posted many poker hands lately but played one fun one last night, 98752ds limp a raise from the action player and a call, I buy position with a backraise and we go three ways to 962r so I flopped top and bottom and low wrap, action pots short stack all in and I jam for $1,400 and we hold! I did pay off too much last night though so I broke even. Money saved is money earned.
Ran well yesterday, saw friends and family + doggos to unwind a little, had wonderful home-cooked food and leftovers too.
ATo in 3! pot made trips on T83T9 against ??, KK>ATo on T-high flop too.
At plo the other night toxic pro grabbed my hand so hard he left a mark on my finger when a friend of mine sitting next to me asked me to sweat the hand my friend folded and I tried to take a peek, pro reached over cursing at us and dug his nail into my finger as he wrestled the cards out of my hand. He had plenty of warning up to this point so I got higher-ups involved and he was banned for at least 24 hours.
My goal for the rest of the year is to make $600 a session or $18,000 a month. That will bring me to my goal for the year of $150,000 poker profit.
Ran well last night, making the nuts and getting paid. Surpassed my goal for the session. It’s slow at work for me this week which is a welcome change from the past six months so I’m going to the beach for a little with a friend before I have training next week. Amazing it’s been that long since I started working, and even more amazing is that my beard isn’t completely gray yet, just starting to gray.
Basic poker 101: play good hand, get good flop, bet/raise, make $$.
Ran meh yesterday at plo but made a decent comeback at 5/T/25 with JJ on J72cc v. AJss. At plo lost top set + fd to two straights and AA to Q6644(??) all in pre as well as AAnfd to top set with fd blockers. Unfortunate that most of these hands were against someone who threatened to f me up several months ago after I complained that someone else at the table was staring at me.
Off to the beach! IÂ’ve been overdue for a beach trip this year and itÂ’s a slow week at work for me, and I have training next week.
The beach break was a welcome rest from work and grind. Felt refreshed. Running good today.
Ran meh yesterday, lost AQ
I have training for work this week near the office which I am dreading because I have to commute during rush hour five times a week. A dealer was talking about her long commute every day in bumper to bumper traffic and smh is this really society? What a waste of time.
Played an afternoon session, felt very much in control of the game at 5/T/25 until this yappy Asian Spanish dude started talking nonstop and it annoyed the sht out of me and I quit. Lost at plo some after booking a win at hold em, top two fd versus wheel and fd blockers versus whale and he hit and quit on me too. Dinner with family now then a late grind.
Ah would not have expected that as I assumed your focus was more on the plo side. Do you feel your expectation is the same in both games or do you feel you are running particularly well/poorly in one or the other?
So, where do you think would be a good place for a beginner to start?

Similar I’d say in terms of running good. I do think I have a way massiver edge in plo.
“Practice creates confidence. Confidence empowers you.” Good quote I heard today.

Training all day listening to lectures is a real slog and not wonderful for my mental health. Unfortunately it brings back memories about when I had my first episode many years ago. At least I am learning some techniques that may help with my hearing prep even if it isnÂ’t all relevant. One thing I know is that part of me is glad IÂ’m not a full time criminal defense lawyer anymore and do mental health law now.
Training is tough due to the commute and early wake up. Did a mock sentencing and got good feedback at least.
On way home was reflecting on all the people I’ve helped during my career and I was very proud. I listened to Keane, Bedshaped all the way home: https://youtu.be/JugGmkvhsKQ?si=vSmDXFh1...
Very sentimental. My client’s smile after he was ordered released from the hospital was very memorable as was the social worker’s
Note after the hearing that he could not stop smiling. 😀
Played a little mix and didn’t get a lot of playable hands, made a mistake or two that cost me a little but also ran meh running pat 98742 into 97653 in 2-7 dramaha and even flopping trips but losing both halves. Made a last minute comeback in big o with AQT32 capped pre and AAQ95 limped in sb AJ4r flop before I had to head to bed for an early sleep.
How much of your live poker volume is in the traditional NLHE versus all the other games? Are you playing about 25%-33% of your overall volume at NLHE?
First week of training done and I’m spent. But I’ve never been more proud to work where I do!
Running fine over the weekend, enjoying getting to sleep in and rest from the hard week of long commute every day and early wake up and long days of lectures and group exercises. Enjoying lattes. Going to see a friend this afternoon. People seem to be enjoying the strategy guide judging from the book reviews in the books and publications thread which is always nice. Someone said recently I was selling it for way too little at $60.
Lattes, rowing, walking in the sun, massage chair, hanging with the ex. What a constructive Sunday of wellness! Very charged up for the last week of training.
