Road to crushing high stakes PLO
Old time nlhe pro here, did very well in the early years up till 2016. Got wiped out by serious illness for 6 years. Just getting back on my feet now and started learning plo (mainly 5c) this year.
Let’s see if the dream is still alive in 2023.
The approach is simple, study effectively 3-5hrs every morning, play 1k hands at night. Going full monk mode. The goal is to make 30k+/month.
Will update weekly with my progress.
Also happy to talk in depth strategy in this topic. Feel free to drop any hh’s.
I also think you are being harsh on Jnandez. Yes, hes a nit. But to say hes not beating 500 PLO makes you look kind of stupid tbh. Whats ur SN on coin?

Not really if you know who this person is. He was top 5 at HUSNG player in the world for many years. Started doing mathematical studying before solvers, and is currently quite successful PLO+ player playing stakes above jnandez
Well, that might be true. But the 500 plo comment is still stupid. And it would be stupid even if it came from an actual top reg like rahm.
And does he really market himself as a HS reg?

Yeah he does, which is why I feel compelled to say something. Obviously if he did not market himself as a HS reg it would be a dick move to bash him for no reason.
But I know that to low/mid stakes players this might not be obvious and I think they deserve to know.
I think it’s fair people stand up for him but I also don’t think it’s very interesting or fruitful to continue about it beyond this post.
I will not share my coin SN here. But if you want to take a shot at me and you’re serious I’ll be happy to arrange a hu match for a set number of hands at 25/50.
I was not trying to challenge you for a hu match, was just trying to see if you actually was competent enough to make your comments. But fair enough, i see your side and i do kind of agree.
Can you update with some results over the last yr since you made the op? Did you stick with 1k hands a day and 3-5 hrs of studying and hit your $30k a month goal? Thanks.

Sure I get that you just wanted to call me out which is fair but thought I’d give you the opportunity to have some skin in the game in doing so.

Sadly it’s still been dominated by a difficult battle with Lyme disease. The first half year I have not been able to do any poker at all.
Since June I’ve been able to pick it up. Hit the study goal more often than not. Volume has been difficult. Profitable over 25k hands at 10/20 and 25/50. Not a significant sample but played 90%+ vs regs and in my own objective and humble opinion am beating these stakes. So the only thing in the way of the monthly 30-50k profit goal is volume, which sadly is a function of my physical state. I’m fighting hard but it’s not entirely in my control and that’s the way it is for now.
generally speaking profitability at these stakes is a greater challenge than getting volume in. I do consider that a big win.
Sorry to hear about your struggles with your illness. I can relate with my mental ailments. Hopefully poker gives you some motivation to stay healthy and a distraction from the less pleasant aspects of life. Run like a god!

Thanks dude. I feel you, we all have to fight a tough one at some point. Pull it together every day and never give up🔥🔥
The jump from midstakes to high stakes
The key is to really start understanding the specific nuance to each spot. There are no short cuts here and it just takes study and repetition. Every spot is different. Let me give you an example.
HU
BTN open, we call AQ887 Ahhh
T63hhs, check check
turn Js. T63Jhhss
We have a decision here. Since there are many combodraws available our hand is not particuarly premium, especially with a 3 card fd. The backdoor FD is more valuable here and can be played more aggresive as a probe than frontdoor FD. Still the hand will be indifferent. Since we generally don't make a good follow up bluff with his hand because of poor blockers, the ev will largely come down to how light our opponent will raise our probe here. Some players are more straightforward and a probe is fine. Some more aggro players could raise this turn quite light as there are many possible combos to do so with.
We decide to c/c. River 2h. We lead pot.
Not a bad play, however, do we really understand how this river should be played? When we dive into the solver it becomes clear potbetting is not much of a strategy, even with A high hearts. The reason is that ranges are still very wide and mergy here. Our opponent can have K high hearts, vs which we want to check raise. We also for example have 2ps/sets/straight with the Ah blocker that want to c/r as a bluff. We don't have as many bluffs that make sense to psb lead.
Our main lines here are small and check raise. What bluffs do we have small? what do calling ranges look like? How does our opponent interaction deviate based on his flop and turn betting strategies? What exploits can we make if we assume population understands this spot roughly at the level we did pre studying it?
Particularly the last questions I find difficult to answer in this case. I try to soak it up as much as possible and over time these things become more apparent.

Oddly I find poker gives me a little sense of control over my life as well. There’s a lot we can’t control in life like unavoidable health issues and poker like negative variance but with hard work discipline some smarts and enough volume you can actually win in this game which is something I appreciate.
What a great take on moving up! Thanks for your contributions to this forum.
For sure it’s a classic self improvement grind like training, coming in better every day.
Even if you’re day is totally ****ed and depressing if you can just get a some work in and make a plus on your skill in that day it gave meaning to that day.
Funny because it’s a zero sum gambling game that attracts a lot of scumbag people and behaviour.

Like melody to hear you talking about poker.
If you have any feedback for vision, Matthias the developer is usually quite quick in responding to users. He is active in the vision discord channel.

Thnx for checking in bro
After a tough winter in the mountains I’ve almost fully healed my Lyme.
I got offered a job in a tech start up and it’s a good offer with inspiring people. It lit that fire in me again and I wake up full of energy and excited about the future.
I no longer feel challenged or inspired by poker.
Gg guys, I got a server with plo5 solver setup if anyone is interested. Also anyone that I don’t have on IM’s yet if you wanna stay in touch shoot me a pm.

Congrats on the health and job achievements! Wish you the best. Hope to follow you on the job front, I suffer from the same issues with poker.
Thanks for the run you gave up Alex. Used to rail your 5000 games back in the old PS days when i was playing 50-100 HUSNG. And your original "Well" was highly inspirational to me in terms of thinking about the game. Amazing to hear that you've recovered from Lyme disease. Its quite bittersweet to see you leave this community, and good luck on your future endeavors
