British Politics
Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.
Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.
Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.
Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...
Just more waffle from you.
I support my local socialist independent because he would raise revenue through wealth taxes and income tax on high earners.
No it was just excuses from you about why nothing can be done
Not seriously tackling the problems is what we cannot afford. That's way more expensive.
You know who I'll be voting for. The same person you would.
I said
re-establishing closer ties with our closest neighbours and/or raising taxes a lot
and in terms of actual policies you say nothing, almost as if you don't really want it to happen.
Nonsense
Actuall policies are building houses, care service; green investments et etc etc etc etc
Public not private
How are you funding it (asking this question does not make me a Tory)?
Ir makes you a child of 79 rather than 45
How are we going to fund not doing ir?
Still coy I see.
The UK took up vast loans from the US to fund the post-war rebuild you cite.
Is that your idea now? If not, what do you have?
Your excuses are ridiculous.
Taxes on the rich. Bonds/etc can easily be sold for credible plans. We can have publically built new towns with some plots sold to the private sector. And of course we get growth from doings so many of the desperately needed things.
You were sold a thatcherite pup if you believe money is the problem.
All for raising money on the bond markets for viable projects - infrastructure type things that need doing including housing that will give a big boost to the economy too.
Pleased to see some meat appear on the bones of your politics declarations. After a few decades of a leftist government we might be able to undo some of the harm done by people like you who worked in finance in the City.
There's never been a lack of meat. I dont really understand why you were arguing against.
Just a thought on taxes on the rich. Not only can we use the money, inequality is probably the biggest problem of all.
Cos PFI was staggeringly expensive borrowing with a huge element of privatisation
Appalling idea conceived just to keep it off the books
nothing at all like public ownership funded with government borrowing repaid with income
Just more waffle from you.

What needs to be done can't be done merely with 'tax on high earners'. There would need to be higher taxes on the great body of the public, more like Scandinavia. That's why nothing's going to be done and things will keep going downhill.
It all depends what you mean by "wealth tax".
Well, forever expecting rich magnates and overlords (known as 'somebody else') to pay for everything and provide for you is not socialist, it's feudal. Which is possibly why that antique notion is so popular in Britain. Socialism requires a bit more participation, responsibility, effort and contribution than that.
Some of these rich "magnates" are previously publicly-owned utilities companies grossly and deliberately undervalued at the time of privatisation.
In other words, you were royally ripped off by the spivs and their enablers in government.
How do they know these people are going to leave anyway? Because they threaten to? lol
Seriously, if these people feel threatened by a total wash out like Starmer the UK is a better place without them.
because they do arrangements like looking at houses in other countries, contacting their lawyers to study the law for expats in other countries, putting things in order in the UK to sell assets and so on.
Actual real elements related to moving away
Bullshit. It's the same thing every time here from the wealthy.
"You can't tax us more or...or...or...we'll take our toys and leave!"
They can leave if they wish. If they sell their houses without buying new ones here it's good for the housing market, and if they keep their houses to return to for the maximum allowable period every year they'll be spending lots of money here each time they return with minimal impact, so also good.

If rich immigrants go away that's good for the housing market (in the sense of lowering house prices), yes.
Now what happens if poor immigrants come though, no effect on rents?
Unlike you I don’t attempt to differentiate between immigrant and host behaviour to try to support some bigoted beliefs I have about some groups of people being no better than animals.
Inflation perfectly on target rn in the UK
