British Politics
Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.
Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.
Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.
Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...
planning terror attacks has legal consequences
I doubt calling Sunak a "useless ****ing Paki" will move the needle for Reform's core voters, but it might make a few disaffected Tories think twice.
Also, kudos for Sunak not shying away from repeating the language used, as upsetting as it is.
The Conservatives, for whatever reason, have tended to produce more non-white frontbenchers than Labour, as everybody knows. They've also had two female leaders, and Labour's never had one. And I'm not sure why anyone would take drunk, dogger and girlfriend-batterer Stan Collymore's word for anything.

You don't understand how it works for some people. They will stand and cheer for anyone, as long as they are being racist towards the right people. That's how things like Hitler happen.
Imagine thinking racism is fine provided you demonise the victim and find some moral justification. JFC.
The people thinking racism is fine if it's against "others" are Sunak and the various Home Secretaries and previous PMs with their Rwanda policy and constant dog whistling.
This person is stupid and dangerous.
UK business secretary Kemi Badenoch has compared the Labour party’s pledge to extend equal pay protections to ethnic minority and disabled workers if it wins the general election with segregation policies in apartheid South Africa.
“I think classifying your workforce by race and having this influence their salaries is morally repellent. It’s what they did in apartheid South Africa” Badenoch told the British Chambers of Commerce’s global annual conference on Thursday.
No, what they legislated for in apartheid South Africa you ****ing dimwit was the opposite of equal pay for equal work. Will you be rolling back the equal pay legislation of the 1970s that enables women to ensure they're paid the same for the same work as men?

Not to mention Theresa May and Amber Rudd and their create a hostile environment for immigrants plan, which snowballed with every more macho and toxic Home Secretary into trying to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.
Luke Akehurst is a widely disliked Starmerite parachuted in from hundreds of miles away to contest the North Durham seat, much to the anger of locals.

Oh man
The pay off appears...

What is nasty and racist is people who continue with this "racial minorities = asylum seekers, adylum seekers = racial minorities" trope.
No country in the world I'm aware of has open door immigration for whomever physically shows up.
No one's talking about that straw man.
Perhaps you weren't aware of
Under then home secretary Theresa May’s leadership, every migration stream was restricted in some way. High skilled routes were closed and a cap was placed on the number of Tier 2 visas issued annually. Eligibility criteria were harshly increased. The remaining seasonal schemes were terminated and family reunification was made harder. A swathe of other stringent measures on language requirements, income thresholds, economic resources, working rights and increasing settlement requirements came in across all migration streams.
But it turned out that reducing immigration was not quite as simple as shutting the doors. This is partly because the UK couldn’t restrict the movement of EU citizens (cue Cameron’s referendum and the road to Brexit). But it was also due in large part to the fact that the UK labour market is structurally dependent on migrants. So to dovetail the restrictive policies, May institutionalised the notion of a hostile environment.
and it's hard to see why you're so worked up about events in the UK when you haven't lived here for years.
Sean Connery syndrome.
Imagine thinking racism is fine provided you demonise the victim and find some moral justification. JFC.
What a breathtakingly absurd perspective
Nobody deserves to be demonized for their ethnicity, a fact Sunak apparently hasn’t been made aware of, but when you’re a minority pandering to nationalism and bigotry it’s laughable to think you’re going to get sympathy when the same people you’re pandering to for opposing minorities turn on you for *checks notes* being a minority
The people attacking Sunak cuz of his race are pieces of ****. Sunak is also a piece of ****

Sorry, but it's the idea that minorities are somehow responsible for bringing racism onto themselves by *checks notes* holding mainstream views and being successful that's laughable.
It might be in your household, where immigrants are believed to be criminals, but Rwanda isn’t a mainstream view in the country.
Hard to get attention in a FPTP election.

So true, and it's so utterly predictable. When 'moderate' national governments and supra-national non-democracies like the EU does not do good for people and make people feel like no one is listeening to their concerns, arseholes and 'strong men' rub their hands in glee.
For sure, which is why the centre and centre-right ground is being caved out in politics, as Starmer will find to his cost when he fails to impact normal people's lives in any significant way.
People weren't deliriously happy 20 years ago of course, but they were far more content than since austerity, as ex-banker Macron has probably realised too late.
