British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.

Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.

Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

"Citizen" has many meanings. Some people on visas are eligible to vote, others with indefinite leave to remain don't.

which first world country do you know that doesn't have a legal definition of citizen? usually ( i think everywhere? ) citizens are those who can get a passport issued by that country

There are often stages people have to go through to qualify before they are eligible for a passport, which can mean several years. I'm just trying to work out who you want to be shot on sight if they try to return after deportation.

If they return after deportation caused by a crime committed in that nation, which they were found guilty of.

Anyone that can be deported (ie every non citizen).

Yes there can be stages, every country can find it's own equilibrium. I'd just like to see an explicit, constitutionally valid, 2 tier treatment of people in countries, where citizens have explicit privileges.

Like in the roman empire.

How do you see this shooting taking place? On production of their ID at immigration? Like they're taken to a courtyard and executed there?

If for some reason the original country doesn't agree and doesn't imprison the person, who cares he is not in the country anymore lol. Ofc death penalty if he ever tries to re-enter. Shoot on sight.

And if a given country X does not generally implement sentences passed upon their citizens by country Y, then citizens of country X have carte blanche to commit crimes in country Y.

only if losing legal status and being deported with no possibility of return isn't a cost (the above was all for legal immigrants)

Not expecting anything good from Starmer & Co but this is ****ing brilliant

Just one data point i know, but people from the right should admit Brexit was a freaking disaster of insane proportions just for the trade **** ups.

The **** that you didn't even manage to fix immigration with Brexit is even worse but... Trade is lifeblood for any non huge country, and an island country needs it more than others and Brexit is a horror show wrt trade. You empowered a bureaucracy, a legion of horrifying midwits telling you what you can buy and how much extra taxes you have to pay on that, if you fill the right form. And wait some weeks.

You can't be on the right and be in favour of this paper-based hell, this is the sea the left swims in.

Still in time to come back to the common market, we are eager to have you back

You still don’t get what brexit was about, do you?

Only a few useful idiots involved in the campaign actually believed the guff about new trade deals.

Nigel Farage attacks Mail newspapers over ‘Putin ally’ reports

Reform UK leader accuses group of trying to stop his party breaking through into parliament

Nigel Farage has launched a stinging attack on the Daily Mail group, accusing the newspapers of trying to stop Reform UK “breaking through into parliament” by publishing reports that suggest he is an ally of Vladmir Putin’s administration.

Farage said the newspaper, which has often been supportive of him in the past, was “collaborating with the Kremlin to protect the dying Conservative party”, also lashing out at Boris Johnson for joining condemnation of his comments about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

At any given time there is a large number of people for whom that's the case, fortunately only a minority of them would take the freeroll shot at a bank robbery you're offering them.

What would that return, £51?

Depends when he put the bet on.

If we're getting all nitty on the joke. The bet must be on him losing his own seat as that's the only election Sunak can lose. So would get get a bit more than £51

😃

People risking so much in terms of careers etc just to win £35 (the potential winnings from the £504 bet placed on Sunak contesting the next GE) .

Yes I saw this. My old constituency from a long time ago. Not totally surprising that corbyns behind but the halving of Lib Dem support is interesting.

I would flutter on these bets being made every election....and this being the first time people have found out

Separately- all this Farage Russia stuff probably just means a drop in turn out I'd guess- which will make the Labour win more impressive by % ... but not actually change the result

Drop in turn out will come, as designed, from photo id.

To judge this in anyway accurately we also need to know how many tories voted on the wrong date.

Some may just have got unlucky by winning the bet and lucky by losing it.

Yeh it’s only really the insider knowledge betters I have a problem with. I really don’t think the Labour guy who bet on himself losing has done anything wrong. Probably some Tories who were just punting get caught up in it too.

Generally betting against yourself is considered suspect ethically. Creates a conflict or, at least, the appearance of one.
