The reason that most folks care (in varying degrees) to human suffering (and even animal suffering) is because we are all made in the Image of God. God gave each of us a conscience, which we all follow in varying degrees.

There is certainly no actual or even implied denunciation of medicine in that quote.

In fact, medicine can help the smart folks live longer and the strong folks get stronger or stay stronger for longer.
