Also, I highly doubt that craig is Catholic. He may care about who the pope is for practical reasons, but I would be shocked if he views the pope as one of his personal spiritual leaders.

Well a lot of us lived their prime young adult years during Wojtila reign, and he played a big role in shaping worldwide geopolitics, so there is that memory in the background.
I think popes after him were far far less significant in determining worldwide events but the idea the next pope could go back being really relevant still lingers

Christian miracles aren’t science either, but this doesn’t deter you from accepting their reality. I don’t think this is the issue for you.

I reread the section where Jesus tells someone how to follow him. I can get the interpretation of being prepared to leave your family, but the giving away all your possessions seems pretty strict. Especially when you consider that Jesus and his immediate disciples seem to have had no possessions apart from their clothes, and were willing to give even those away.
The Bible commands believers to give generously. And not just stuff. We are to give of our time, talent and treasure.
There's also the bit about it being either impossible or awfully close to impossible for a rich man to get into heaven. I know that pretty much all those Republicans members of congress are very rich (along with the President, VP, and most of the Democrats), so i can feel pretty confident that almost none of them will even be eligible for a Christian heaven just based on that single qualification.
Being rich doesn't disqualify someone from entering heaven. But if one's hopes and desires are resting on their material wealth, then they most likely won't seek God in the first place.

Since parties I attend are typically alcohol-free, you probably wouldn't enjoy them.

Fundamentalists have historically objected to teaching about the bible and putting it next to the Iliad, Odessey, Alexander Romance etc as literary works of importance to western civilization. Among christians, there is significant controversy on what bible stories mean, so the only solution christians could sgree on was leaving it out of public schools.

However, when teaching about world history, the influence of the Bible can't be ignored.
