Israel / Iran thread
Seems like this conflict is not going to end anytime soon and is worthy of its own thread.
If Iran thought he was a western asset they would just kill him I feel like thatβs pretty obvious. But maybe you know something the IRGC doesnβt.
he doenst have to be an actual asset or compromised (although he might be) to be useful to the West. hes a "reformer" that wants better relations with the West and is already making concessions to the Trump admin.
Iran is full of liberal elements that want to normalize with the West. IRGC isnt out there murdering them all lol.
Loads of people in Europe...
You can argue that if you want to. I disagree but either way I'd say it's a lot of people.
I would say in the Arab world especially Iran is looked at as a non sympathetic figure (at least by non Shias) because of their use of Arab paramilitaries to destabilize the region and attack Israel. I am paraphrasing, but there is a common saying that goes something along the lines of, "Iran is willing to fight Israel till the last Arab," which I think sums general sentiment in the region fairly eloquently.
In the Western world, elites and their media actually go out of their way not to emphasize Iran's direct involvement in Putin's genocide of Ukraine, on top of their de-emphasis of Iran's direct and indirect aggression and hostile rhetoric towards the US since the 1979 Revolution. For this reason low information (which is most people) left leaning westerners probably are generally sympathetic to Iran.
A pretty big irony of the IRGCs extremely hostile rhetoric and actions against the US, is that (except for Trump) the US has actually gone out of their way in the last few decades to prop up and support the Iranian regime. As they have calculated the downsides of the IRGC collapsing (regional chaos) would probably outweigh any potential upsides.
Looks like both parties are adapting lovely to the ceasefire. Bibi gets to continue to wreak havoc on Gaza and Ali is back in his comfort zone, maintaining his rugged image by threatening annihilation with reduced risk. All is well for both of them again.

The IRGC is mainly focused on intense domestic crackdown at the moment, especially of the Kurds and Jews. Lots of imprisonments and executions.
Remember, Iran is more or less an empire of various ethnic groups, that maintains control through repression and authoritarian force. And in light of their weaknesses abroad, they are projecting strength at home through brutality.
Sounds all good in the hood if you’re a Western leftist.
