Mini-Walrus
I don't know who invented Walrus. IBD gave it CPR recently.
Feed me good music to win.

1) A song that I've for
In 6th place (4 points):
Probably forgotten by many. Not really by me. Appreciate it more now than I did then, probably because it didn't get as overplayed as many of their grunge contemporaries.
On a sad note, I learned that most of the band is dead now.

I probably like this more than I should. It's pretty corny, but I dunno, sometimes songs can be fun. Plus I like the tempo changes and the chorus even if the lyrics are a bit silly.
I think someone submitted this to me for a previous walrus, so I can't say I've forgotten about it.

Rickroll submits Stroke 9 - Little Black Backpack
wait how could you be nostalgic for something you've never heard before
now I'm complaining, round invalidated, sorry
That comment was in comparison to "hearing something I've heard a million times before". Apologies for any confusion.
I will say that no one submitted a song for this category that I hadn't heard before.
In 4th place (6 points):
Younger me did like this band, but more the louder songs like Stereo or Cut Your Hair. Older me would say this is probably better than both of those. Probably not "the best song of the 1990s", which Pitchfork apparently did once, but it certainly aged well enough to stand out in a year that was possibly the greatest year in entertainment in my lifetime.

IBD submits Pavement - Gold Soundz
I lasted nine seconds with Pavement.
Edit: Almost as long as with your mom!
I considered Cut Your Hair, but figured you would’ve heard it more times. I also think Gold Soundz is a better song anyway.

This was the only song submitted that I had COMPLETELY forgotten existed.
And I didn't love it then. Probably just wasn't into this type of music. But listening to it now that I'm older, yeah this is pretty good. Really good actually. Love the bass line, and the voice is killer.

Absolutely loved this in high school. The hook was so infectious it would even capture your standard white kid who listened to rock music like 90% of the time. (Yes, I know it's sampled from Land of 1000 Dances. I don't care. It's fun.)

finally a walrus host with good taste :p

Have I mentioned this song before? I don't know how you nailed it this hard. Absolutely perfect selection.
This takes me back to freshman year of college and the hard rock/metal radio station that would always play in the campus gym.

Xander submits Guano Apes - Open Your Eyes
Going to be visiting relatives later this week.
It's really boring there especially in the morning, so I might get a category or two banged out while I'm there.
i was considering sending this
My other option
Yay.
I don't think you mentioned this before. It just seemed to fit the bill. Think it helps that we're a similar age.
never heard of guano apes before - is that some canadian thing like the tragically hip?
Tragically German
Watching wrestling right now, but can probably get another category done tonight.
2) A song from a genre that I don't listen to much.
Will be grading on two categories, how different the song is from the stuff I listen to and how much I like the song. The former is more important than the latter, though you need both to win.
In 9th place (1 point):
It's unfortunate that I'm giving last place to a song that I really like. But the category fit is quite bad.
I listen to a lot of stuff like this. My favorite radio station plays stuff like The Lumineers, James Bay, Noah Kahan, Mumford and Sons. I guess it's a little more Celtic influenced than those artists, but the style is not really very far away.
So, yeah, song is great, just not a fit here.

Eric submits Great Big Sea - Sea of No Cares
In 8th place (2 points):
Better category fit than the last one, but still not great.
This reminds me of Coldplay's EDM phase from about 10 years ago, which was all over radio stations I listened to. The dude's voice even sounds a good amount like Chris Martin.
Song is decent, but below average in this crop, since no one submitted anything horrid.

Bolt submits Rüfüs Du Sol - On My Knees
In 7th place (3 points):
Listened to tons of Eurodance in the 90s, so another mild category fail. Completely forgot about this one. I'd say you should have submitted this for the last category, but that probably gets 2nd also.
