What happened with the DC scheduling?

A day ago dogfloss noticed that a new DC started up about 7 hours earlier than usual.

I texted Zac to see what was up. He posted comments in chatroll. He tried to reset the start time to what it was (new game starting at 0000 PST), but it didn't take.

So, it is automatically starting a new day at 0000 UTC/GMT now. He's going to leave it there unless it is problem, but I can't see how it could be an issue for anyone. The DC is on a 24 hour cycle so if anyone had a time of day that they preferred to do the DC, then they still can still do it at the same time.

August 2025 DC Highlights

Monthly Race

  • arjun13 won his third consecutive monthly DC race in August, but did so in an unexpected and unprecedented way. With less than a week left in the month, arjun13 was hovering just outside the top 10 in the DC race, potentially about to end his 38-month streak of top-10 finishes. arjun then proceeded to finish the month on a heater, winning the last four DCs (becoming the fifth player in DC history to win four consecutive DCs) and leapfrogging everyone ahead of him in the standings. As a result, arjun led the standings for only one day in August, but it was the only day that mattered. Of arjun’s 38th monthly DC wins (the most all-time), this had to be the most surprising, come-from-behind victory.

  • SmalltownBoy and SubArcticK finished in second and third place, respectively, in August. SmalltownBoy had just 14 top-10 scores, but 11 of them were in the top five, including four wins. SubArcticK tied with three other players for the third-most top-10 scores (17), nine of which were in the top five.

  • nails and Hg80 rounded out the top five. nails tied for the second-most DC wins (4), while Hg80 had the second-most top-10 scores (18).

  • The rest of the top 10 was separated by just 14 points. quaspl and dogfloss tied for seventh place, but quaspl won the tiebreaker with three DC wins to dog’s one. Nonetheless, dogfloss led the table with 19 top-10 scores. Meanwhile, Derwi was one of the winners of the August 31 DC, which vaulted him past two other players and into tenth place. Checky, wafflesobv, and Kampi77 finished just outside the top 10.

Milestones

  • On August 8, Dynasty played his 5,500th DC, the first player to do so.
  • On August 5, Dos played his 1,500th DC, becoming the 32nd player to reach that milestone.
  • SubArcticK surpassed 25,000 DC points during the month, the seventh player to do so.

Stat of the Month

  • 13: arjun13’s 217 DC points in August was tied for the 13th-lowest score to win a monthly DC race in DC history. The relatively low and tightly bunched scores in the top 10 enabled arjun13 to catch up and ultimately surpass everyone when he ran the table at the end of the month.

2025 Yearly Race

I was trying to get a grasp on how rare arjun's phenomenal 6 DC wins in a row are/were.

Arjun's DC winrate is 11.4%. For calculation purposes let's assume the playing field has been relatively the same strength and has had about the same number of players for the duration of his playing time (which is reasonable for an estimate). I know some days there are multiple winners, but that does not impact his winrate.

I went to ChatGBT and it gave me this. I knew it would be rare but I did not think it would be 1 in 4 million rare…

Is the info below correct??

-------------
To find the odds (or probability) of a player with an 11.4% win rate winning 6 consecutive games, you raise the single-game win probability to the power of 6:
Step-by-step:
1. Single-game win rate:
P(win)=11.4%=0.114P(\text{win}) = 11.4\% = 0.114P(win)=11.4%=0.114
2. Probability of 6 consecutive wins:
P(6 wins)=0.1146P(\text{6 wins}) = 0.114^6P(6 wins)=0.1146
Calculation:
0.1146=0.000000228≈2.28Γ—10−70.114^6 = 0.000000228 \approx 2.28 \times 10^{-7}0.1146=0.000000228≈2.28Γ—10−7
Final Answer:
≈ 0.0000228%
Or in odds form:
β€’ Roughly 1 in 4,385,964

Thanks for the phantom win, I only won 5 in a row though. It is 0.114^5 which is 1 in 51936. 6 in a row would be 1 in 455586.

Ooops.....sorry Felt like 8 in a row for us watching...lol

Your numbers seem more realistic.

Where did ChatGPT go wrong on the 6 in a row??? You got 1 in 455586 and it got 1 in 4,385,964.

Looks like it put in an extra zero for some reason. 0.114^6 should have 5 zeros between the . and the 2 but chatgpt put 6 in.

Calculator gives me 0.00000219497 compared to your 0.000000228.

Thx Derwi. I get the same as you in bold by calculator

for 5 consecutive wins I get .00001924 (which is .001924% I think), which means 51,946 to 1.

ChatGPt has a very similar answer.

with a winrate of 11.4 % what are the odds of winning 5 consecutive games

ChatGPT said:
To calculate the odds of winning 5 consecutive games given a winrate of 11.4%, we can treat each game as an independent event.
________________________________________
Step-by-step:
β€’ Winrate = 11.4% = 0.114
β€’ Probability of winning 1 game = 0.114
β€’ Probability of winning 5 games in a row =
0.11450.114^50.1145
________________________________________
Calculation:
0.1145≈0.000019370.114^5 ≈ 0.000019370.1145≈0.00001937
Or in percentage:
≈0.001937% chance≈ 0.001937\% \text{ chance}≈0.001937% chance
________________________________________
Final Answer:
🔢 About 0.00194% chance of winning 5 games in a row with an 11.4% winrate.
🧠 Odds-wise, that’s roughly 1 in 51,624.

So I get 51,946 to 1
Arjun gets 51,936 to 1
ChatGPt gets 51,624 to 1

Minor differences all probably from different rounding..

Odd that ChatGPt messed up the 1st question though. At 6 consecutives wins (which was the wrong amount - my bad), it was way off on probability.

September 2025 DC Highlights

Monthly Race

  • Hg80 outdueled Derwi to win the September DC race. Derwi had the most top-10 scores (19) and tied for the most top-five scores (13) during the month, and he was atop the leaderboard on September 29. However, Hg80 won the September 30 DC – his fifth DC win of the month – and leapfrogged past Derwi to finish in first place. In addition to posting the most DC wins, Hg80 had 18 top-10 scores (tied for second-most) and 13 top-five scores (tied for the most). It was Hg80’s 3rd monthly DC win and his first since October 2018.

  • Dynasty, arjun13, and anton-09 round out the top five in September. Dynasty posted four DC wins (tied for second-most) and 13 top-five scores (tied for the most with Hg80 and Derwi). After winning the last four DCs in August, arjun13 extended that streak by winning the September 1 DC – the first player ever to win five consecutive DCs. arjun13 added two other wins and three second-place finishes during the month. And speaking of streaks, anton-09 became the sixth player to win four consecutive DCs, a total that moved him into the top five for the month despite only 12 top-10 scores.

  • The rest of the top 10 was separated by just 20 points. quaspl (sixth place) tied anton-09 for fifth, but lost the tiebreaker (DC wins) 4 to 3; dogfloss (seventh place) surged into the top 10 thanks to top-10 scores in seven of the last eight DCs in September, including both of her wins; and Guessinator (tenth place) finished in the top 10 for the first time since April 2024. SmalltownBoy, lilrascal, and NP finished just outside the top 10.

Milestones

  • On September 5, Hg80 won his 250th DC, the 13th player to reach this milestone.
  • A day later, on September 6, Guessinator won his 250th DC (the 14th player to do it), but it was also his 4,000th DC (the 12th player to get there).
  • Hg80 also surpassed 500 yearly race points during the month, the 14th player to do so.

Stat of the Month

  • 24.5: The average number of daily players in the DC in September, the highest in a year.

Yesterday I could play rack 9 in two different ways, chaining 4s and ruining bonus or not chaining 4s and maximize bonus.

Tough choice

Hi Gabe. That is pretty neat, and rare.

If I was in that spot I'd be surprised to see that the 14 bonus point option ending up being equal to the 17.

Before checking I might have thought..... "My top chains are 5s and 6s, and I can increase my 3rd chain value (of 4s) by killing 3 bonus points and going from 17 to 14, but the change only moves me from three zones of 4s to four zones of 4s, and they would still be my 3rd chain in value..... "....

I am on my way to achieve an annual win rate of less than 10%

I am the Lewis Hamilton of Triplechain. Living on past achievements, but currently underperforming

I think I need to retire SmalltownBoy at 200.

SmallTownBoy's winrate is considerably higher than Gaby's though, so you are still in your prime ...lol

Plus, a year is too small of a sample size in TC

I remember when Dynasty had three years that went something like 48/24/42..... or thereabouts..

Interesting

I had started the DC of yesterday, without finishing it.

I have just finished it and could immediately play the DC of today.

So either I have finished the first game at the very end of the day or (more likely) TC allows me to finish an ongoing game after the deadline.

Which opens a way to cheating obv

Looks like you have no ranking # beside your game. Perhaps this indicates you started before the end of day but, (as you suggest) finished after the end of day.

I have not noticed any "winners" with no number beside their name, so if someone was trying to cheat to get a win they'd be outing themselves by being top of the score sheet with no ranking.

Also, I notice that once a day is over that there are no rankings #s by any players' DC game until at least one player completes the DC for the next day. So if that is a 30 minute period (for example), maybe there is a 30 minute window in there to complete the game from the day before as long as you started it during the previous day.?? If so, maybe Zac can fix that by having any "in progress" games deleted at 00:00, and the winners auto ranked at 00:01.

Anyway, I'll flag this for Zac and he might be able to (one way or another) put a hard stop on games after the end of day.

Happy New Year, Triplechainers!

I'll post the usual December write-up and full-year stats sometime this weekend (hopefully).

In the meantime, here is the TC DC stat sheet for 2026:

Hi folks. Zac thinks he has fixed the DC "end of day" glitch.

Now, if anyone attempts to finish a DC they started before the "end of day", it should show as a "normal" game with a note to the player that they missed the DC cutoff time.

December 2025 DC Highlights

Monthly Race

  • dogfloss held off multiple challengers to win the December DC race. dogfloss tied for the second-most top-10 scores with 20, and led the field with 13 top-five scores. It was the first monthly win for dogfloss since July 2024 and her 14th overall – the fifth-most all-time.

  • quaspl and Dynasty finished in second and third place, respectively. quaspl matched dogfloss with 20 top-10 scores, 12 of which were in the top five. Dynasty tied for the most wins (4) and had the most top-two scores (8). Dynasty ended the year with four consecutive third-place finishes in the monthly DC race.

  • SubArcticK and Derwi rounded out the top five, separated by a single point. SubArcticK had 12 top-five scores, tied for second-most, while Derwi had 19 top-10 scores, the fourth-highest total.

  • The rest of the top 10 was separated by just 17 points. Kampi77 (sixth place) and wafflesobv (seventh place) tied for the most wins (4), while arjun13 led the table with 21 top-10 scores – though none of them were wins (see more on that below). lilrascal, SmalltownBoy, and Hg80 finished just outside the top 10.

Milestones

  • On December 23, Derwi won his 450th DC, just the second player to reach this milestone.
  • On December 31, anton-09 won his 400th DC, the fifth player to do so.
  • SubArcticK surpassed 1,500 yearly race points in December, the third player to reach that milestone.

Stats of the Month

  • 21: The top-10 scores for arjun13 in December without winning a DC, which is tied for the most in a single month (with Dynasty in October 2011).
  • 43: The consecutive months arjun13 has finished in the top-10 of a monthly DC race, tied for the most all-time with…himself. In fact, those two streaks are separated by just one month, so arjun has finished in the top 10 in 86 of the past 87 monthly DC races.

2025 Yearly Race

Highlights from the 2025 yearly race and other DC statistics:

  • arjun13 won the yearly race for the third straight year while posting the third-most yearly race points on record. He won six monthly DC races in 2025 and had five other top-five finishes. SubArcticK was runner-up for the second consecutive year, posting two monthly DC wins, three second-place finishes, and three third-place finishes. Dynasty finished in third place, his first top-three finish since 2021.
  • arjun13 also had the most wins and the most total DC points for the year. His DC points total of 2,790 in 2025 was the ninth-most all-time.
  • The average DC win rate in 2025 was 6.5%, above the long-term average of 6.3% but the lowest since 2022.
  • We averaged 23.7 players per DC in 2025, in line with the past few years but down from a recent peak of 26 in 2022.
  • 21 different players finished in the top 10 in at least one monthly DC race, two more than the previous year and matching the total from 2023.
  • Three players – arjun13, SubArcticK, and Dynasty – played in all 364 DCs in 2025. (The total does not include the January 18 DC due to a glitch that prevented most people from playing.) wafflesobv and dogfloss missed just one DC during the year.

Thanks as always for doing this, nails!

I had some fun with ChatGPT today. I tried to make him/her/it build a Triplechain puzzle solver so that next step I could create a DC AI player (SmalltownBot).
ChatGPT managed to create a function allright to calculate the score of a completed DC board. That was encouraging.

Then I asked for a routine to calculate the highest score for a puzzle game with all 9 racks known.
He gave me that routine.
I asked: how long will this routine take on my PC with this and these specs?
ChatGPT replied: well, about 88 million years.

I said: OK, lets make it easy, just calculate the maximum theoretical score using number frequencies for a puzzle. ChatGPT coded a routine that calculated 192 max score for a puzzle that has a solution of 50k.

Shortly after that I gave up.

AI isn't taking over anytime soon.
