Well clearly they wanted a more mobile QB after seeing Rodgers take 16 sacks in his first 6 games last season.

So they signed a much more mobile QB, who thru his first 6 games, has been sacked...(checks math)...22 times lulz

There were a few drives in their early games where they were calling more option plays and designed runs for Fields, and they seemed to move the ball at will (although being the Jets they still shot themselves in the foot and ended those drives with fumbles, or bad drops that led to FG attempts, etc.), and it looked like maybe they had the secret sauce.

I dunno whether teams just adjusted to that super quick and shut it down, or if the concussion led to them nixing the designed runs, but somewhere after those first couple games he turned into a pocket passer (who holds onto the ball too long, and throws inaccurately when he does pull the trigger, which as we all know is the recipe for success).

If you google 'Fields Steelers offer' you'll get other corroborating reports that say the same.

Does make some sense that they wanted to go back to the guy they went 4-2 with as a bridge qb imo. It was a common assumption that they also dropped him for Russ bc Tomlin had made Russ promises of being the starter prior to his signing (plus obviously your passing game ceiling is capped with Fields).

Don't forget they already had Russ in-house before Fields became available on the cheap (and then Russ got hurt on a tackling sled before the season).

It's not so much that they benched him for Russ as Russ was back from injury and got his promised gig back. Then Russ wore out his welcome by the end, as he's wont to do.

Russ was supposed to have a qb competition with Kenny Pickett but Pickett was so sure that Russ was getting the job that he asked out.
