TV: what have you been watching?

I think The Walking Dead may be the best drama thats currently airing/in production.

There, I said it.

American Masters documentary on Hannah Arendt. Chilling. See it if you can since the American Masters series usually repeats the shows in the same week.

Yes, this was fantastic. Seems we're doomed to repeat the past.

We already are, aren't we?

Cast for S20 of Taskmaster. No idea who any of these people are, but I'll watch.

Clarkson's Farm, Season Four.

Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson buys a farm. In season four, he's trying to buy a pub. Great cast of characters in the series, especially Gerald.

Now that it's all in I finally watched season 4. I really like this show 😀 But I am 99% sure he makes himself look clueless when I am positive much research and thought goes into his decisions. And that he films himself making mistakes he doesn't really make. That said I am sure there are also real situations that are surprising. In any event it is a very entertaining show and he and Kaleb and Charlie and Gerald and Lisa and Harriet are all likeable characters. I have no doubt the local Bureacracy is an absolute nightmare!

So what do they do on Taskmaster? Never seen it.

Watching it right now. On season 16. It's awesome.

They do funny tasks.

I think it's a required taste. I've tried showing it to my mom and sister when I visit my parents and they don't get it.

Basically they take 5 people, usually comedians, and have them do these tasks/challenges that get pre-recorded.

The actual show that airs is done over 10 episodes. Each follows the same "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" formula of playing the video of them attempting the tasks in front of a live audience (except in 2020/2021 due to COVID).

It's probably best to watch a full episode, but these clips can give you an idea.

Hmmmmmm. Might need a gummy to watch that.

lol go for it. Like I said, probably better to watch a full episode or two before deciding.

I would recommend skipping S1 though. It has it's moments, but is by far the weakest.

Man, Dept. Q was great. Really enjoyed it.

Just finished a complete rewatch of Silicon Valley for the first time since it was initally broadcasted. It was very enjoyable. I can't think of a show or movie that was more perfectly cast. Every actor really became thier characters.. Also has Mike Judge ever missed? This guy is always the nuts!

Currently half way through season 3 of Yellowstone and so far it's still really good. Don't mess with Montana .
Also binge watched Dexter Original Sin which I found surprisingly decent and am currently watching the New Dexter series which so far is holding my attention, but too early to make a call after just three episodes.

Signed up for Paramount+ and saw they have Cheers on there. Figured I haven't watched since I was a kid and I'm quite enjoying it. Obv a lot of it hasn't aged well, what has prior to 1990. A fun hang 22 minutes at a time.

I've been so hyped when I first heard about this a year or two ago even with the limited information.

Well, it's not much, but luckily November 7th is right around the corner.

i have 3 episodes left of Dept. Q and I had no idea about this one until it popped up on my YouTube home page. I watched the trailer and recognized almost every person in the cast. The show is aces. Scratches that itch for crime drama procedural. The first episode is crafted unlike any show I've seen before. Matthew Goode is terrific as a burnout cop, back on the job after getting shot in the line of duty, trying to solve a previously unsolved case. His supporting cast is terrific. Alexej Manvelov plays as his assistant and the dude has a backstory that seems dark, and has given him a hardened exterior. I'm sad I only have 3 episodes left. I hope we get more out of this world. Check out the trailer

Written by Scott Frank. I knew his name sounded familiar! Screenplay credits include: Logan, The Queen's Gambit (Creator), Minority Report, Out of Sight, Get Shorty.

Great show that I finished a while back. For me, a secondary mystery in this show was who was this guy living with Det. Carl Morck and his son? Why is he there? He wasn't even listed in the many cast listings on the web. It is eventually answered in the show in a late episode.

Finished the Billy Joel documentary. Really good.

Someone posted an episode of The Dick Van Dyke show here a while back and I decided to watch it because I never really had. All or most of the episodes are on youtube and I'm about 20 deep now. The cast is as good as it gets, and it deserves its classic status for many other reasons. I think it was probably a big influence on some of the writers of the Simpsons golden years. For example, there is an episode where Rob sees a UFO and the story line is pretty similar to when homer sees an alien.

Anyway, thanks to whoever posted that.

Finally watched Andor. Loved it.

For sure. There are so many references in 90s Simpsons episodes. It's always fun learning about some obscure writer or hearing and old-timey song for the first time and then remembering that The Simpsons referenced it in a joke or storyline. Simpsons jokes are usually easy to get without prior knowledge of those things, but every once in a while they reveal a deeper level of meaning.

I remember you posting that picture of your guitar with the Screeching Weasel sticker, and since we're on the topic of old TV show references in other works, this song popped into my mind. It's basically a song about just being yourself and not trying to fit in or be cool because the other kids are picking on you. Ben said he wrote it for a specific girl he knew who was having a really hard time in high school, and I love that he used a Brady family lesson/Peter Brady storyline as a metaphor for it.

Some of the lyrics:

Don't you see that people
Will like you for who you are?.....

As long as you don't have lots of zits or small tits
Or crooked teeth
Then you won't be a freak, a wildebeest
And people won't tape signs onto your back
Or beat the crap out of you
Or ignore your sorry ass

See, there's something vapid inside of you
There's a sweet little robot inside of you
So take off that silly mustache
Don't be a baby
There's a Pete Brady inside of you

Boy, I've really learned a lot today

(One) You act your age
(Two) You don't try to be something you're not
(Three) You find out in advance
What restaurant your mom and dad are going to
And go someplace else

Now, I grew up watching The Brady Bunch, but I didn't remember this episode, and by the time I was into Weasel, I wasn't really watching reruns. Granted, the name of the song is "Peter Brady" so it's not some crazy mystery, but a few years back I had The Brady Bunch on in the background while I was doing stuff around the house, and I couldn't help but notice when this scene happened.

Dexter's starting to get a bit silly albeit still entertaining. I already found the part in the first episode, where his killing of Logan in New Blood, was deemed self defence and not an escape attempt really dumb but was prepared to overlook it, just for the sake of it, although it still rankled me.
However,

Mia picking up a would be victim in a bar and bringing him back to her place, without that being potentially disastrous in terms of arrest, followed by Harrison not seeming to wonder how Dexter happened to know the address of an at large serial killer

is starting to stretch things, although maybe he'll ask Dex in the next episode. But I'm still finding it pretty silly.
