TV: what have you been watching?
I think The Walking Dead may be the best drama thats currently airing/in production.
There, I said it.
Good to know, I was intending to finally start watching it tomorrow
Though it's kind of a slow burn, I've been enjoying Pluribus. Without spoiling anything, it's a zombie apocalypse show made by the guy who created Breaking Bad. Spoiling episode 1
Spoiler
The zombies are psychic aliens
but I think knowing the spoiler makes episode one more enjoyable and less confusing.

FWIW, what you're calling a "spoiler" was sort of obvious by the middle of e1.
BTW
Spoiler
the proper description of the aliens is *hive mind*
Happy 100th birthday to the great Dick van Dyke!
Watched the first season of Stranger Things
Absolutely dug the synth music (cool story behind it too) and growing up in the 80’s it felt like a slice of childhood. I just loved the feel of it
Like most horror I thought it lost steam once all was revealed but the first 6 or so episodes were peak tv for me
Yeah that season 1 rocks. season 2 was weak but watchable, season 3 was quite a bit better, and season 4 was almost up there with season 1 for me.
I didn't get past the first season. It was so bloated with all sorts of "who cares" crap. BG/GF crap. There is nothing I want to watch on screen then teenage dating crap. The season could've been a two hour movie and been great.

Well, that's because you're a grumpy old bastard. [emoji23]

The last 20 minutes of S5E4 is S Tier.

You'd hate Cobra Kai then. Which is a shame because it's ****ing awesome. (but rewatch Karate Kid 1-3 first)
I'm in my first Stranger Things run through and just began s5. It's ok, nothing that'll ever demand a rewatch from me. Definitely overhyped, although if you were a kid growing up with those guys I could see it being pretty incredible.

Heard something similar. Will slog through it anyways

I usually feel the same about teenage stuff but this felt ok to me, the nostalgia was just too enjoyable
I've been watching Industry mainly because season 3 is supposed to be really good and s4 comes out soon, but man it is a SLOG. Wondering if it's even worth powering through or if it's just not for me and I should give up?

What season are you on?
I almost didn't finish s1, but s2 and s3 are excellent.
Yea season 1 is average, keep going to get to the later seasons.
GF and I just finished Welcome To Derry.
I'm frustrated, because while it certainly has many good thingd about it - production value, SFX, acting....alll of which are superb...we had the same problem with this as we did with the two IT movies. Mainly, they are bloated, with unnecessary subplots and tangents, with way too much happening to way too many characters. Like....I'm there for the origin of Pennywise, you know? Why do I also need a race war smack dab in the middle of it?
My GF had an interesting observation. She said the show and movies both have the same problem - while they are all about fear - and showng other people being afraid - the movies and show are not scary at all. It's sympathetic fear - meaning, " I understand you're afraid and that's a shame," rather than empathetic fear - meaning, "I share your fear."
Don't get me wrong, there are some amazing set pieces - the opening in the car with the boy being picked up by the creepy family and what comes after that - is shocking and well done - but it made me giggle at how ourageous and disgusting it was, not afraid. It's well done, tho.
But there's an artificallity about it all that I can't place....naturally, since it's all artificial, of course. But some shows and movies can go beyond that and really touch something in the viewer that is meaningful and truthful.
As an example, I always thought another Stephen King adapatation - The Mist - to be truly frightening. The characters seem real, lived in....but the adults in this one do not.
The kids are great, seriously. Great actors, every one. And they're asked to do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to emoting...didn't see a false note, ever.
I wish I could explain it better. By the last episodes I was just waiting for the thing to be over. And that's not fun.
I'm at the start of s2. It would have to have just about the biggest turnaround in television history for me to start actually enjoying this show, but I will soldier on!
It wasn't until late in season 2 that it got good for me, like the last 2 episodes, then Season 3 is all good.
Finished up Industry. Imo it never really got good. Season 3 was probably the best season, but it certainly wasn't the big step up I was hoping for. Biggest issue is that these characters all suck. And not in a love to hate them kinda way...I just don't care about them.
Not sure I'll bother with next season, or even why it's necessary. Seems almost like they wrote a final season and then unexpectedly got renewed.
On Criterion now is Wong Kar-wai's made for television saga Blossoms Shanghai. It's about stock traders and big shots making deals at a couple restaurants on some swanky street in Shanghai. The conniving women who run these places where business meetings take place are terrific and beautiful.
So far I'm through five of the nineteen episodes
