TV: what have you been watching?

I think The Walking Dead may be the best drama thats currently airing/in production.

There, I said it.

I also just finished Pluribus. I wanted to love it, merely liked it? Maybe I appreciate the ideas more than the execution. Manousos was the best part of the show and had limited screentime.

Finished The Night Manager. Sometimes I wish the final episode is not the setup for the next season. Still, an excellent show.

When did you last watch s1? I saw it like a decade ago when it came out. Don't foresee rewatching it, but there's probably some good recap vids on YouTube.

I watched seasons one and two that's streaming now. Season two ends with the cliffhanger.

also enjoyed the night manager and have the same opinion as you about cliffhangers

Just finished blowing through Fallout season 2 on Prime. I really like the whole vibe of this show but I will admit I liked season one better. It is still very good and watchable and I look forward to season 3.

Listening to Bill Simons talk about the best tv shows ever on his latest podcast, is one of the most tilting listens of all time!!! Limiting the discussion to only click-baits/some of the most known shows a la The Sopranos, GOT, Breaking Bad, The Wire - at least he got that one in 🙄 - and Mad Men is lol, to say the least!!!

Now I do like very niche content and am buyest towards certain sci-fy shows, so of course I did not expect some of my favourite to be mentioned like Mr Robot, Devs, The Watchmen, Westward, Stargate Universe, or Battlestar Galactica, but to exclude True Detective from the discussion is just fracking cringe-worthy!!!

Disclaimer : at least his guest, Max Kellerman, did escape the lol narrative a little by mentioning Dark (that Bill had not seen, of course 🙄).

I haven't listened but have you considered shows might be the most known because they are the best tv shows ever? Those top 4 seem pretty spot on to me, although I think The Wire might be a little overrated.

I completely disagree on popularity = quality, both in tv, movies (and a bunch of other subjects). And The Wire is the only one that belongs/is the best of that list, imho, albeit GOT also belongs

Sopranos is definitely the best ever, followed by Breaking Bad/BCS.

And the earlier seasons of Fargo. They kind of lost me on the Chris Rock season, but the last season was pretty good.

The Shield and Justified are up there too.

Twin Peaks >>>> everything else

Most popular is not the same as highest rated, and they are highly rated for a reason. Otherwise they'd be talking about BBT or The Bachelor or whatever.

It would be ridiculous for any best of list to not include The Sopranos or Breaking Bad.

Fair point and an all-time list will always include The Sopranos and The Wire, as it should, but my point remains that Bill Simmons does not go beyond the obvious first 2 and does not straw away exploring, especially with non-English series - and lol at having never heard about the series Dark is, making a joke at it being German and thus somehow not worthy of mentioning and having the audacity to still do a podcast about it 🙄. But whatever, Simmons remains a pop culture interesting listen, The Rewatchables is entertaining (even if this episode was on his latest Bill Simmons podcast[/I)], even if does not touch the quality of say [I]Filmpodcasting... end of rant 😉

Any Industry fans? They're operating on a level that few have reached. The showrunners are ambitious and while each swing doesn't connect, they sure drive the ball outta the park when they do connect. The season finale and episodes leading into it were fantastic with elevated film language. Season 5 will be their last.

Discussed quite a bit in the General TV Discussion thread.

I'm meaning to binge S3 at some point, but definitely need some YouTube recap videos first.

I already got fooled into thinking s3 of Industry was gonna be really good after struggling hard to get through the first 2 seasons. I won't get fooled again!

I recommend you at least check out Season 3 Episode 4. The episode centers on Rishi, one of my favorite characters of the show. It's basically the HBO version of Uncut Gems, it's terrific!

Those are basically the top 5 shows of all time. The Shield and Justified could be in that group, you could add Dark, Deadwood and Rome, but Watchmen and True Detective were basically 1 season shows. Westworld isn't better than the top 5 mentions. Its like having a top 5 guitarist list and be annoyed Jimi Hendrix is always listed, or complain the same 7-8 NBA players are always mentioned in the top 10 all time discussion.

Riightttt... I guess I will have to make my point more obvious : the top popular tv series are straightforward and someone like Bill Simmons will happily point them out in click-bait fashion, the interesting part of the debate - and one with which a pop culture icon like Simmons and many peeps ITT apparently fail to understand -, are the shows on the fringes threatening to dethrone the consensus shows. End of rant (especially ITT/on this site 🙄).

This tangent got me thinking about what the peak era of tv was, and I think it's gotta be somewhere between about 2011-2015. There were so many shows from that period that were probably overshadowed somewhat by BB, GoT, etc, but I feel like if they came out today would be considered on par or better than anything that's come out this decade. So I checked out a site's list of 50 best shows of the 2020s and was just like, "wtf is this ****". Television has really fallen off a cliff since then.

Peak tv, let's see... I guess I'll go with 81-86. Not totally serious but not totally joking either.

This may well result in another tv show draft, which reminds me of one me and D1iab partnered on over in pog iirc!

I think average drama shows these days are significantly higher quality in terms of writing, acting and budget that average drama shows pre Twin Peaks (so pre late 80s)

High points are a different argument though.
