Joseph Heller still dead, still at 76 (and other celebrity deaths): RIP Hank Aaron and Willie Mays

When an interviewer told Mr. Heller that he had never written anything as good as ''Catch-22,'' the author shot back, ''Who has?''

This one:

indeed
shame on me for not thinking of it
Nina has a powerful cover as well

from the comments

Nina had a way of making every word in this song drip with the blood of past lives lost

I had my students do their research paper on "Strange Fruit" this semester. After listening to it, one guy said so that's what Kanye sampled in "Blood on the Leaves."

I like my students to learn things they don't know about when they do research.

I pose this question to them (and to myself as well): can protest songs influence behavior?

I have them research "Strange Fruit" because they don't think anything happened before they were born or is over a hundred years old.

Sure, reference "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield and "Ohio" by CSN (among many others of that era).

This is a magnificent question. Not much of quality has been written about it over the years, if anything.

Punk changed everything.

can protest books influence behavior?
seems the answer to both might the same
another question: is influence (change) in the context of your question characterized as incremental, widespread, resistance, defiance, or other?

Probably all of those, but my guess is that protest songs sing to the choir. Perhaps I'm wrong.

This has always been my guess, but maybe it emboldens believers to go out and recruit other believers.

if the concept was not effective would propaganda still exist?

David Soul is dead.

I think propaganda is designed to maintain a system, whereas protest is intended to change one.

RIP David Soul. When we were little, my brother was Starsky and I was Hutch, and a cardboard box was that really cool car they had. Soul was also great in Salems Lot.

And the Starsky & Hutch theme is amazing!

Many times protests are propaganda! I participated in a few back in The Sixties.

Then I wised up.

Beethoven was a propagandist. And a damn good one.

So was Vivaldi!!!!

So was Vivaldi!!!!

And very successful. Everyone forgets there were only 2 seasons until he did his 'quattro stagioni' thing.
