Let's Talk Watches

Let's Talk Watches

Previous Thread: "Let's talk non-Rolex watches.

Please feel free to continue discussions of watches here. As we discovered toward the end of the last thread, there are some really nice Rolexes, so they're a fine topic here as well.

A few notes, from the last thread:

1) Please don't devolve the discussion in to one about the possible shallowness of potential watch buyers. Much of the discussion will be amongst well-to-do people considering buying expensive watches - whatever their reasons are, it's their decision, and they are aware they could buy something else cheaper if all they wanted to do was tell time.

2) With that in mind, almost everyone agrees, loudly, that you should not be buying watches for their investment potential. It's a bad idea.

The standard for watch content on the internet is

, which is full of great information.

I made a new addition to my permanent collection, the Tag Heuer Monaco to go with my Omega Speedmaster Pro and Tudor Black Bay red/smiley. Got a good local deal for $3,700 cash. I feel like the Monaco and Moonwatch go perfectly together as two watches with a lot of history, one more subtle and the other with flair.

Hmm, don't know why I can't get the pic to post. But you all know what it looks like :P

you can copy paste images directly into the text field now

the old Monaco... that piece has been in production for YEARS.
if you could find an original in good condition, that would be worth something.

I dont really do Heuer, but they have a couple pieces that are desirable...
Top of which is the Heuer Mikrograph.

It's Chronograph beats at 360,000 beats, when most watches beat at 28,000 beats, to capture that 1/100th of a second timing.

About to receive a watch. In the 18K range retail. I have no use for such an item, and plan to re-sell.
Any tips?
2 choices:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/295822808752

Any suggestions on which to choose as to quality or salability? How much can I plan on netting?

you're asking about buying a 18k range piece timepiece or do you already have those two pieces and need to get rid of them?

at $18k... there are a LOT of really great choices. that's a really sweet spot in terms of valuation.

it looks like you are more inclined to sports watches as opposed to dress pieces? Tudor and Panerai are not my first choices for spending or being gifted $18k. Panerai is really a dead brand, there are dedicated lovers of that brand, but resale is horrendous and the timepieces just dont have much value imho. not really well made, and most of them don't use inhouse movements. Tudor is much better in terms of resale and watchmaking even though it is rolex's little brother... people love them because they are made to a price point and they are an entry way into Rolex. the thing is, no one really wants a $18k Tudor... they want a $3500-$6000 tudor.

let me know those answers and I can help you

retirement gift?

very confused how you're able to choose a watch up to 18k but can't just take the cash instead

Thanks for replying. (I know very little about expensive watches) To clarify:
I have the option of $7500 cash or an expensive prize. (Diamond jewelry, electronics, etc) The retail of the various items tops out around 18K. I'm willing to take a discount for cash, but a 60% discount is pretty harsh.
I have no desire to keep any of the prizes. I haven't worn an expensive watch or jewelry at any point in my life, and have all the electronics etc I could want.
So, the watches look the most fungible. The 2 I posted above were among the most expensive. About 30 watches are shown.

Other options:

https://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/us-en/w...
https://www.ulysse-nardin.com/usa_en/816...
https://int.cartier.com/en/collections/w...

In all, I see the brands: Panerai, Jaeger-Lecoultre, Tudor, Ulysse Nardin, Cartier, IWC Schaffhausen, BVlgari, Breitling, Baume & Mercier, Omega, Tag Heuer, Chopard, Hublot, Grand Seiko,

The point of my questions is to maximize the cash I can get out of this.

oh neat

i would legit just find someone who wants an 18k watch for an agreed upon discount and let him pick the watch - seems like an ideal setup if you have the time to find and secure a buyer

Can you share the list of prizes?
Is it just a category or are there specific models and brands in those categories?
Not to be a nit picker, but a watch is not fungible... it is a negotiable and a hard asset, but watches don't have any fungibility to them. The margins on jewelry are outrageous so unless you buy wisely, your going to loose a lot of value there when you try and resell.

Watches are reasonably good for resale if you buy wisely, but the market is a little soft right now and while some watches appreciate in value, being able to get those pieces at msrp is difficult without a purchase history.

Of those timepiece brands above, Jaeger lecoultre is the most desirable at the price level you mentioned. Omega and grand seiko are well collected, but there 15k+ models are very hard resells... those buyers want a 5k-11k watche.

I'm thinking short of a list you can show us, that 7500 cash is the best deal.

is the resale market really that bad that a 15k watch in an unopened box won't go for more than 7.5k?

The watches are specific items. The ones I linked above are actual options.
The selection reminds me of Sharper Image type collection. 17K Tiffany Gift Card Spree, Designer Hand bag, Custom Golf Simulator, Trip to Paris, etc

CATEGORIES:

BAGS & LUGGAGE
CARS
ELECTRONICS
EXPERIENCES
JEWELRY
KITCHEN
SHOES
WATCHES

My expectations aren't that I'm getting 15K cash out of this. I would be happy with 12K. But 7.5K?

Would I be better served trying to sell 3 Tudors that retail for $4375?
https://www.tudorwatch.com/en/watches/bl...
Or 3 Seikos at $4800 each?
https://www.grand-seiko.com/us-en/collec...

I'll PM the listings, would rather not post publicly.

that really depends on a few factors, including the maker, the caliber and availability of that specific piece.

none of those listed watchmakers are really that desirable that people are going to flock to the sale as if it's a wondrous deal... save for Jaeger Lecoultre and to a smaller effect IWC and tudor.

none of the pieces I saw were in that upper teens range in terms of value, so you would be trying to sell a 10-11k watch for below retail and may get 7500-8000... mainly because those market segments are not that hot.

if you had access to a 15k MSRP Rolex you could almost assure yourself of getting 80-90% of msrp... or even MAKE money, but none of those pieces are available thru OP's list.

What do you people think about this?

Small NY family making them. My dad just bought one. I think its lovely.

Knopf NY 405

I have some thoughts on the design...

But really, as long as you enjoy it, that's all that matters.

Who's movement does it use?

Spent the last year going a little crazy on watches (at least imo) and realized that I get bored of watches too quickly to keep buying expensive ones.

Just sold all of mine and am looking to start a collection in the sub $1500 per watch range

Bought and sold
- Cartier tank xl (felt too big for a tank after a while)
- omega sea master blue
- GP Laureato Blue dial (hated this one pretty quick)
- YG Rolex Day-Date 36 (loved this watch the most but got bored of it too)

Ended up losing about $10-12k reselling them, which made me realize this is unsustainable

New collection right now
- Baltic MR01 salmon dial
- Tissot PRX Tiffany (meh bought a while ago)
- White casioak

What else should I look at? Considered getting the khaki field mechanical and nomos club campus red dial before buying the Baltic

maybe you should stop if you just resell them at a heavy loss

For sure an option, but I do still like watches , so my thought was to just collect the cheap ones so even if I get bored it’s not an expensive cost

idk, not calling you a liar or anything, but the more I think about it, the less your story makes sense

Lol what?

Here are the watches I bought and sold and lost a bunch of money on that you think I’m lying about for some reason lol

Sending out the 18238 day date tomorrow, which is the last one I have and the Baltic comes in the mail on Tuesday

why would you take a 10k bath on 4 watches that mostly retail for less than that individually? it doesn't make any sense
