The Beekeeper was so bad it doesn’t belong in a “film” thread. Statham is as he usually is and is fine. Some of the actions scenes are okay. But everything else is terrible at a level I can’t fathom how it was even conceived let alone made. I expect very little from actions flicks, especially current ones, but this is one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

yeah, The Beekeeper was trash. Whoever is credited with the screenplay should never be allowed to call himself a writer ever again.

Really want to see Poor Things, Past Lives, and American Fiction, Anatomy Of A Fall, and Zone Of Interest.

I have The Holdovers just SLIGHTLY over American Fiction... mainly because the ending of American Fiction is weak and if I am to be honest, is out of character for the rest of the film, whereas the end of The Holdovers IS the point of the film.

Up to that last 5-10 minutes of these films, I actually have American Fiction ahead (at some points way ahead) of The Holdovers... but believe me when I say that the world is a MUCH better place with both films existing in it.

I agree with most of that (I enjoyed The Holdovers more all the way through though). I was extremely disappointed when they cut to black in AF the first time and I can’t say they made up for it afterwards. I really really wanted that scene we never got.

I bought Anatomy of a Fall last night. Will watch this week sometime. The Zone of Interest opens locally on Friday. Will watch this weekend. Maestro will probably be a buzzer beater watch for me. I’m absolutely dreading it lol. Also want to give Barbie and KotFM a second go before the Oscars.

The Beekeeper was passably entertaining. I enjoyed it despite its immense flaws but my expectations were less than zero. I never would have watched it but my good friend that’s an action film junkie happened to be getting off work and the game I was playing in was absolute trash so the timing lined up.

I thought Aftersun was well done and had a lot to say. It was also a difficult watch and I have no interest in repeating that. It’s odd because I can’t really say what it’s about. The TVs description of it was even a spoiler, so beware. I’ll just say it’s about a young girl going on a trip with her Dad. Will checkout the directors next offering - reminds me of Malik.

I have watched Aftersun three times. A father on a trip with his daughter sums it up but doesn't come close to what the film is about. It was my top movie last year. The dance scene to "Under Pressure" is stunning and heartbreaking.

I wonder how my daughter will remember me.

Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat

Rewatching some Hitchcock films on Criterion. I always enjoy films that use confined settings to see how directors manage. See the first half of Kurosawa's High and Low for a masterclass or any number of submarine and horror films.

I think Hitchcock does a great job in Lifeboat. Hitchcock tells of the chief trouble with the film was Tallulah Bankhead showing up for filming without underwear.

This.

saw Zone Of Interest today , and it's a disturbing a film as you will ever process.
How , us as humans are able to compartmentalize and dehumanize from those different from us beyong saddening.

This movie should be watched by everyone so they too can maybe see how cold and cruel and zero empathy we could be driven to
if we believe the narrative and how something that could be totally evil, be justified and accepted with.

this wasnt the best movie by far, but it should be a movie watched by all.

At one time I was thinking of running a bracket for chase scenes, and I figured this had to be in it along with Bullitt and French Connection...

On a scale of E.T. to Dear Zachary, how are we feeling when walking out of the theater.

Love these movies. I always want to show Chicken Run to my class, but I can't quite fit it in.

Save Chicken Run for the Graduate Seminar.

anyone seen the Chicken Run sequel yet? It's without Nick Park and I'm wondering if it's any good...

I showed my class City Lights tonight. They were all clapping when it was over. Usually a couple like it, but that's the first time I've had that reaction from a class.

I now will say without reservation it's my favorite movie of all time.

As I sit here watching 2001: ASO this makes me think of a question...

What is our favorite Film of all time versus what do we think is the best film of all time...

I am sure this is a dichotomy that exists in all of us.

I do think the Sight and Sound Poll does a good job overall, and I wouldn't fault anyone for choosing any of the top 100.

I might go with Vertigo or Au Hazard Balthazar. Can't quite decide. Or I might just give up and say City Lights is my favorite and the best.

For the last 25 years, my favorite film has been The Big Sleep. I don't think there is a best film and trying to name one, for me at least, would be futile.

Spoiler
Show

Or would it have to be The Big Sleep since it's my favorite?

my tastes aren't as sophisticated as most of you so my 3 personal favs are

the big lebowski
zodiac
dr strangelove

and there are at least 30 (probably a lot more) other movies that are in my top 10 all time fav movies couldn't possibly narrow it down.

wouldn't even try to begin and guess what the actual "best" film is if it even exists.

Station Agent and American Splendor for me. I doubt either make many top 100s.

Maybe not, but two great picks.

I may like Lebowsky as much as Big Sleep, but for all the wrong reasons.
