Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Would never rate it THAT HIGH, but True Romance definitely has 2 of the most emotionally charged scenes ever.

It’s the movie that got me into watching better and more interesting movies. I watched the hell out of Pump Up The Volume and Slater was probably my favorite actor at the time. True Romance floored me. Pulp Fiction, NBK, Reservoir Dogs and all of those others started with True Romance. For QT and me lol
Best with Letterboxd ratings:
Tokyo Story (4.4)
Late Spring (4.3)
An Autumn Afternoon (4.2)
Tokyo Twilight (4.2)
Early Summer (4.2)
Good Morning (4.2)
Floating Weeds (4.1)
Late Autumn (4.1)
Equinox Flower (4.0)
Early Spring (4.0)
The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice (4.0)
The Only Son (4.0)
I Was Born, But ... (4.0)
The End of Summer (4.0)
I don't think any other director has more 4.0 films and above, but maybe Kurosawa just barely. He didn't used to, but Letterboxd has started turning more into IMDB ratings lately.
Dragnet Girl is my favorite though. Best style + silent film grammar + modern editing I've seen.
I tried that stunt getting drunk and lining up the glasses in front of me at the bar one time. Didn't work out so well for me. The lady kept getting mad and said give her the glasses, I said not until the end of the night, I had to recreate this scene from a movie. That was the bar down the street from my apartment, when I first moved in, and she hated me after that.
My favorite movie (it will never make any best list) is True Romance, and Big Lebowski is my second. Can’t ever really describe why I love True Romance and I never see anyone mention it as one of their favorites, so it probably speaks to my weirdness.
Glad to see TR getting some love. What is better than watching those two say “I’m a little ****ed up, you’re a little ****ed up, but we are gonna love each other and that’s that”. Beyond all the great scenes and characters, watching that ideal of love had such an effect on me and has always stuck
3. Great Beauty
4. NCFOM
The Holdovers was fantastic.
Mad Max Fury Road and Blade Runner 2049 are two of the best movies this century.
Ida
Nope
Mandy
Are also recent movies I love and are on my list.
2049 for sure. I notice it is creeping up in people's ratings, but still remains overshadowed by In The Mood For Love among the film-school set.
And Dragnet Girl!!! My favorite Ozu!!!
I'd have trouble listing my favorite movies of the 21st century. I'd need to go through each year and pick four, which would be about 100.
I'd have some that are neglected by many. I'm thinking of smaller films like The Florida Project, but in particular Lars and the Real Girl.
I love the way an entire community supports Lars, accepting his bringing a sex doll to church or to the hospital and the way people care about him. I think the film celebrates community and what should be our connection to each other in a world increasingly divided and downright hostile to difference.
Looking through the lists of critics, I don't see anyone mention A Ghost Story by David Lowery, a moving and profound film about grief and loneliness. How can anyone not be moved by that pie eating scene or a ghost who no longer understands what it is waiting for?
I can't distinguish between best and favorite, but I do think I can defend my favorites as "best" too.
I will try to list my list of top 50 films of the century because I know some of my choices will surprise me. I think most of us will be surprised by a few films that we might not realize how much we value them.

Yup. 2 absolutely amazing (emotionally charged) scenes and a piece of beauty
Surprised to see you say Dark Knight, but in total agreement about it being one of the best movies of all time
I would never argue for TDK nor Annihilation being GOAT movies - more like 2001 and/or Lawrence of Arabia... -, but they are my favs, so 😉

Lars and the Real Girl is very deep... the top layer narrative is extremely touching and nourishing, but the deeper symbolism's are where I feel most at home with this story.
Lars and the Real Girl is quite rewarding.

I think this is why the question can be most difficult to grapple with...
Personally, I have no issues with making steadfast claim(s) for the greatest films ever made... but my feelings get in the way of what my 'favorite films of all time' might be at any given moment because I am constantly changing... and so are my tastes.
Rarely are the two perfectly aligned... and yet I watch and enjoy the greatest list as if they were my favorites.
lars and the real girl is fantastic.
My choice for "best" would probably be The Godfather.
As far as favorites, I thought about this some and I figured that any movie that I'm willing to turn on and watch again and again, even if I pick it up in the middle of the movie, would qualify.
The Wizard of Oz
A Few Good Men
Jaws
Forrest Gump
Groundhog Day
A Christmas Story
Elf
Pulp Fiction
Looking forward to this film about a guy who cleans public toilets.

For those that have not had the supreme joy of seeing this movie, Departures... you are missing wondrous part's of your life.
The Ending!

should we do another draft?
American Fiction lives up to the hype. Hilarious and so cringey uncomfortable at times, but also amazing well written characters and a lot of heart. My wife and I both loved it.
