The "LOLCANADA" thread...again
So what's new?
I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet...i'd be shocked if they lost the election now.
Just shows just how incompetent Conservatives are.
Were do you get that crap its rising to 46.5 billion for 2023-2024 and 40 billion the next few years after and no plan for a balanced budget even though budgets balance themselves
You are not counting provincial debt as federal debt are you?
These are the federal Canadian gvmnt debt stats, trust me look around what the situation is in the USA, UK, France Italy and so on, and be thankful you are in Canada right now (I fully agree with you running a deficit right now is an insult to all macroeconomic theory, and a shameful disregard of the future)
Trudeau is still a monster for what he did during COVID, no need to claim he is running a deficit that isn't needed to claim he is an horrible human being who Canada would be better without

I’m not sure we’re you got that chart from and I am only referring to federal debt
From here, chart 1
I would cry in Chinese if I could see a NEGATIVE DEFICIT in any of the last quarters in my country (Italy) or in the USA
A good start would be deciding what you're talking about:

So if I'm summarizing correctly, Canada (like every other country) spent big during the pandemic (which affected every country) and now has inflation (like every country) and this is putting pressure on housing (like every country) and this is all Trudeau's fault because of minor procurement issues in a tiny line item of an app from CBSA?
Got it.
Yeah blowing a 100 million $$$ and basically falsely locking up $10,000 people is no big deal as long as one of Justin’s friends gets rich
We are talking about deficits, which are variations of total debt.
I am personally talking about the fact that recently, as all economic theory would suggest given low unemployment and inflation over target, Canadian Federal gvmnt deficit have come down to earth and they even had some quarters of surplus, again as 101 macro would tell you to do, unlike many other countries which for various reasons didn't, even after society and the economy fully reopened after covid
I tend not to worry about a lot of your grammar choices, but I've read this several times and still can't make sense of it. What are you saying here?
Sorry my bad on my phone
So they may have wasted up to 100 million $$ on the app
It’s reported 10,000 people were incorrectly forced to quarantine because of the app
This was a no bid contract so usually that means liberal friends get rich
Hopefully this makes it clearer my bad

There hasn’t been a surplus any quarter under Justin Trudeau . I am not sure Harper had one

I linked you an apolitical source giving you data for Q1 2023, surplus.
Statista (another very neutral source) has Canadian deficit at less than 1% of GDP in 2022 and 2023
I mean I would love nothing else than blaming Trudeau (which tbh I hate personally more than I should probably) for yet another apocalyptic mistake but as far as budget deficits go, and as far as Trudeau can actually determine them, you should be happy about the results , very few countries are doing better than yours
You were suggesting we have "fairly balanced budget currently", when in fact we just had one of our largest deficits in history two years ago, and still have a significantly large one. Then you used a chart purportedly of Canadian debt to back up your point, right after saying "a NEGATIVE DEFICIT in any of the last quarters" - you seem to be conflating the two quite a bit.
As for that chart, I'm not sure what it's of, but it doesn't correctly reflect either our deficit or debt - perhaps you could provide a link?

I'd agree that if we're talking about over the last couple decades, I believe Canada has had pretty strong debt-to-GDP or debt per capita numbers, and had run lower deficits per capita than many other western countries. But since Covid, like many countries our deficits have of course ballooned, which was why your post about a "fairly balanced budget currently" didn't make a lot of sense.

Your deficit has been less than 1% of GDP in 2022 and 2023 (as per statista screenshot, link here)

The previous chart is DEFICIT quarterly, from this link (chart 1). Two recent quarters were in surplus

Your COVID deficit was big but the same happened in many other countries.
Currently you are behaving with a rare wisdom that we definitely DO NOT SEE in countries like the USA running at obscene, insane, incomprehensible deficits even when at full employment

You run less than 1% deficit in 2022 and 2023.
The USA run at -5.4% in 2022, -6.1% in 2023.
Both countries had over target inflation and historically low unemployment both years (elements that all economic theories use to determine if running a deficit is sensible).
It's like you are living in planet sanity and they are living in lalaland

Ah right, I forgot you guys were talking about the app; I could've gone back and checked myself. No worries. Yeah, that app is just a massive, massive ****ing boondoggle. Whether it was corruption or incompetence, it's just a huge cluster****.
Aghh the days when the Liberals were outraged at a $16 glass of orange juice and a $5000 hotel stay
On the bright side with the Arrive Scam App no ones talking about the $50,000 dinner and $500,000 stay at the affordability retreat

I seem to have a gap in my knowledge of how the government reports their budget; these refer to a "Canadian general government" surplus, which I don't believe is the complete story:
Canadian general government recorded a surplus of $4.2 billion in the first quarter. Excluding social security funds (Canada Pension Plan and Quebec Pension Plan), the general government posted a deficit of $12.8 billion, mainly due to federal and provincial–territorial governments.
So I'm not sure what the difference is here between the "general government" surplus and what is normally reported (which I think would be that second figure of a $12.8 billion deficit), but what I know is this. The Canadian government put forward a budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year with a $43 billion deficit. At their fall update, they are projecting it to be $40.7 billion. I'm assuming the reports you're referencing are using a different accounting measurement, because the last thing the government would do is tell everyone they are going to have a $40 billion deficit when they are in fact running surpluses.
While I'm pretty done with Trudeau, I'm certainly not on Lozen's side of our economy being mismanaged far worse than most, but I'm also not on board with what appear to be very inaccurate numbers.

That would be around 2% of GDP last year and this year. Not bad for the post-Covid period, but also not <1%.

Main difference is probably about pension tax revenue
Nice to see a commitment to first nations . I hope he follows through on his promises unlike our current PM who hasn't met many including clean drinking water
Two strong policies if elected
Axe the tax and control for first nations
Yup like rebranding it will help

The payments will henceforth be called the Canada Carbon Rebate rather than the Climate Action Incentive Payment.
Good move. It is unfortunate that Poilievre's consistent lie of omissions repeated a thousand fold that the carbon tax and rebate scheme is only a carbon tax, but hopefully having it clearly be the carbon rebate will help put that lie to rest. Unfortunately, many who should really really know better are not fully aware how the rebates worked.

Keep dreaming . I’m curious does all the carbon tax businesses pay rebated back at 90-95 %

How do the rebates work in Canada?
