Any QB who can run 1100+ yards plus throws half decent is MVP material with solid OC/HC. Can Fields become "half decent" with 3 years in the books on a crappy team? Of course he can, but he can't do it alone. The staff will need to get him to that level thru improved OLine play (he had 55 sacks in '22 btw), confidence, effective route running and utilize his dual threat opportunities.

I'd rather have Fields than Godgers coming off an Achilles injury at age 40.

How many chances can you give Fields? The Bears absolutely crushed it last year by getting a haul for what already looks like an absolute bust, gave him a legit number one receiving option and he was still ass. Less ass sure, but still ass

Still, the absolute thing the bears can do is pass up on a qb from this class to reset the clock, improve faster than fields does, be forced to pick up the option and then be stuck in the nebulous position miami is in where they don’t wanna pay tua but can’t afford not to

Pulling the rip cord and getting more assets out of fields is the best option

Why couldn't the Bears afford to not pay Fields if he doesn't work out next season?

One of the main reasons why drafting a QB now is probably best for them is that as of right now the 2025 QB draft class looks pretty weak. With a deep 2025 QB draft there would be a solid argument for trading down this year, stockpiling picks and using those in case Fields doesn't build on the second half of last season.

I assume the implication is you’re either drafting a qb or you’re keeping fields but you’re not doing both

I guess it’s possible they do but that seems unlikely

If they draft a QB now, they'll probably try to trade Fields and only keep him if they don't get an offer they like. Timing is going to be interesting because there's only a week between the draft and the end of the 5YO period.

But if they don't draft a QB and trade down instead, they're in a totally different situation than Miami. It's highly unlikely the Dolphins have a top 10 pick in 2025 and with the league's oldest roster, moving on from Tua would most likely mean tear down followed by rebuild.
For the Bears, if things go bad with Fields in 2024 that most likely means another top 10 pick plus the draft capital they received for the 2024 #1 pick. Assuming they're picking up his 5YO if they want to keep him, they even could see what happens with Fields in 2025 and potentially draft a QB in 2026. That sounds pretty unlikely though.

Again, I'd be surprised if they didn't draft Caleb.

The calculus for Miami would be to sign a vet QB imo

Someone like Cousins who would might move there for Mike McD’s brilliance or like Baker who could provide the same as Tua but for less than half the cost

They’d still have to work through what to do with Tua but I’m sure someone would trade for him

I get that there's some similarities, but I'll take Tua over Bake all day.

My biggest worry with Tua is whether he can compete against the good teams. He managed to overcome the "can he stay healthy?" narrative this season, so maybe he'll be better against good teams next season *shrug*

I'd be pleasantly surprised if they can sign Tua for 45-50mil. I thought the 5/$255mil Hurts got would be the absolute floor for him. Guaranteed money, especially what's guaranteed for injury are certainly a big topic, too.

Also kinda doubt Baker signs for $20mil/year, especially if only the first year is fully guaranteed.

Re Baker I agree. I think he’ll get at least Geno money.

And I’m certain that Tua’s agent will be pushing for that kind of deal given his stats the past two seasons. But it’ll be interesting to see how that negotiation goes, given the agent should be aware of what Tua might get from another team as well

Like with Cousins, everyone itt thinks Tua shouldn’t be paid but when you look at how bleak the 18-32 ranked QBs are you realise how much leverage he still has

But the point remains the same re Tua and Baker even if both numbers are higher.
There’ll be at least a ‘1 elite player’ difference in their salaries most likely and there’s an argument that they’re pretty similar skill sets IMO

Tua might not either, but I think long term, Tua would be the better of the two.

I don’t like it - COTY is usually “hey your team wasn’t great last year and you did good this year” usually regardless of actual coaching.

Feels like MIA performed too well in 2023, at least as perceived by folks who may not be in the trenches of a “is Tua great” debate.

Dan Quinn at same price feels like better chance of success. Miami made playoffs in 2023, WAS did not.
