British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.

Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.

Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

Incredibly, immigration isn't of the same quality in every country, who could have guessed that

So much for the NF cry of no-go areas for whites and immigration being a drain on resources.

Immigration bulwarks the youth and working-age cohort and the tax base, so...

Speaker fails to let Diane Abbott speak in PMQs debate on Tory donor’s remarks

As prime minister’s questions finished, Flynn and Starmer approached Abbott to talk to her as she sat on the backbenches.

According to an account of the conversation retweeted by Abbott herself, Starmer asked if there was anything he could do to help her, to which she replied: “Restore the whip.”

Only 30% of state educated whites attending higher education is a pretty shocking statistic honestly. Might be more indicative of private vs state schools than an ethnicity thing though.

I agree with your general point. We should be proud of how well immigrants do in Britain, compared to similar European countries. It doesn’t really suit either party to say that though.

It's not the same people though (not the same immigrants), so it's not very much about Britain being better at integrating immigrants in it's society, rather almost certainly about Britain attracting better immigrants. Which is still something to be proud of, but on a different level. And which could be lost quickly if the economy goes bad for too long among other things.

That hasn't been the argument put forward by the "too much immigration" contingent, which is that the UK isn't choosy enough.

I thought that was your line too?

Yes I suppose that is true to some extent. We should still be proud though. And honestly our politicians should be loudly proclaiming how great our immigration policy is (even if that is somewhat hyperbolic). That’s not going to happen though.

That contingent is wrong, and everyone should be loudly telling them so. Both parties want to pander to them instead though (Labour a bit less than Tories)

Sadly some parts of the left don’t want to talk about it either, because it contradicts their “Britain is really racist” narrative.

Labour don't want to argue for anything and have completely lost the plot. When the election campaign starts they'll be competing with the Tories to see who can put the largest, most colourful Union Jacks on their leaflets.

Alan B'stard was a prescient creation.

I don't think the UK has allowed in too many immigrants that don't fit in the economy no, it filtered fairly well compared to others.

Language helps I guess, among other things

Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, who created that fine show among many others, are I think the grandchildren rather than children of immigrants, but still.

I met Marks and Gran once. Font row seats at the making of an episode of Holding the Fort. There's a thin obscure (and definitely not to be revealed here) reference to my family in at least Holding the Fort, Birds of a Feather and the New Statemen.

People are being a bit unfair on Kier Starmer. The economy may be in crises, NHS on it's knees etc etc but lets not underestimate just how powerful his bold socialist wide range of policy to relax the planning laws is going to be at fixing all this really quickly.

Turns out that the darling pollster of the far right is a serial liar:

Yup, as predicted:

Scotland's much delayed Hate Crime bill finally comes into force on the 1st April (appropriately enough). It was delayed for a couple of years as the Police said they weren't ready for it. The timing in a sense couldn't be worse for them as just over a week ago Police Scotland announced they would no longer be able to investigate all crimes. Now they have announced they will investigate every single hate crime that has been reported, even anonymous complaints. Bizarrely, you can also report hate crimes to a number of 3rd parties, including a sex shop in Glasgow and a mushroom farm. They haven't responded to questions about the integrity of data, GDPR etc when 3rd parties are involved.

The Dean of the Faculty of Advocates clearly isn't impressed with the legislation:

There has also been ridcule from all quartiers over the government's childish 'Hate Monster' video and campaign. Added to this is the claim from Police Scotland about who will commit hate crimes. This has also been roundly criticised, especially the part about 'white male entitlement' with academics pointing out that it is poverty etc that is an issue for younger males, not 'white male entitlement'

This BBC article covers some of the above.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-6...

This will go the way of other failed legislation that has gone through the Scottish Parliament only to end up having to be shelved at a later date such as the Named Person bill, the Offensive Behaviour at Football bill, the GRR bill, the DRS scheme. They are truly incompetent.

What a bunch of morons.

Can't everyone against it talk to their SNP MP once this is in flow, and then report them for 'looking at me funny'. Sounds like there's a case, if you don't need evidence of malice or ill-will. Hell, you can even do it anonymously.
