Early start on my birthday trip 3/27 - 4/2

My birthday trip to Vegas is one month away, but I’m so looking forward to it I thought I’d start early.

We used to go to Vegas four or five times a year, but now it’s only two or three times. We are just too busy with work, and we have a new granddaughter who was born in August. Plus, flights got more expensive, and my husband has his own business so doesn’t travel as much. No more diamond with Delta, which is very sad. Knowing we won’t get upgraded to first class is a little depressing, but he has lots of drink vouchers!

We’ll be staying at our timeshare at the Elara. I love this place. The rooms are beautiful, it has a nice pool, and the location is perfect for us – right across the street from Aria. Of course, in Vegas right across the street is a 15 to 20-minute walk!

We have two dinners planned. My b-day dinner at Sparrow + Wolf and a dinner at Pampas – I’m a foodie and my husband loves meat. Granted, I love meat, too, so I enjoy Pampas. We don’t have a Brazilian meat joint here. I got a pretty good deal on Groupon, and it’s on the way to the Aria.

We are doing the tasting plus wine pairing at S+W, and I cannot wait. It’s a bit extravagant, but you only live once. I spend most of my money on travel, food, and wine, so this fits right in. (I buy my clothes from Goodwill, lol.)

We usually go snowboarding in the spring, but my husband is still recovering from long Covid (doing much better) and a back issue, so that’s definitely not happening.

Other than eating, we’ll be drinking a lot of wine/champagne while playing mainly PLO at Aria. We usually know someone at the table, and the dealers remembered us. I hope it’s the same this time. Should be because we were just there last fall. We did miss our winter trip, though.

I’m going to update this a little with how my poker is going live. So far this year, I’m down $1,700, but $1,000 of that is because of crazy $25 double board PLO bomb pots and a couple of luck boxes.

I have a NLHE game tonight and a PLO game Friday night, so I’ll post about those soon.

Roll and shoe picks will come closer to the date.

I said DETAILS woman damnit 😉

I will give a few tomorrow! I should take notes. I am pretty sure one of the players across from me was taking notes on each hand, but I've never done it.

For sure if you’re going to lose $3k on a Vegas trip, being stuck 6k and then winning 3k back on your last session is the way to do it

Winning 3k first up and then losing 6 would be way less pleasant

Taking notes on hands is easier/faster than it sounds like, but I can see how it would be a bit cumbersome if you have never done it before.

I do think that a few hand histories (don't need to go overboard like me) adds something extra to every TR though. But it might just be me who has this specific fetish :p

Only done it occasionally myself but plan on doing it during my August trip, just a few key reminders tapped into a Notes app on my phone after any big hands.

It's always funny that we tend to get more details on losing sessions than good ones - there was a great TR not so long ago where a guy actually won two tournaments but didn't document a single hand! (think he was pretty drunk in fairness)

A few hands from my one winning session:

I finally win with AA, but it’s not much:
I raise pre from SB w/ AAXX and basically the table calls. Flops is Ac6c6d, I check, checks around. Turn is the 5c and I bet $75 and an older Asian guy calls – he’s been a bit sticky. River is 4x, and I bet $200 and he tanks and folds. Wish I had gone $100.

My first big loss:
An active player (definitely a reg) raises from EP, a couple calls, I (CO, $1,000) call w/ Ah4h6dJd, BB pots it, everyone calls.

Flop (~$360): 2d5h7h Jc 4d

He pots, I repot (all in), and he sigh calls. Runout: 2d5h7h Jc 4d. He has AA32. For a second I thought my two pair was good, but then I realized he had the wheel.

Rebuy! $1,000.

I hang on for a while and then get moved to the main game, where I somehow turned that second $1,000 into $5,150.

HH (It’s my first orbit and double-up):
I have about $1,000 in SB, raise, 3bet, calls, I flat w/ AsQsKxTx, flop comes TsJsQx.

I check, 3bettor pots (late 30s white guy – probably a reg), and I repot for my stack, he calls. Turn and river are both spades, and I double up. He had AKKX.

HH:
A limp or two, I limp MP (there is a lot of limp/calling in this game because there are two action players – one is my husband), couple more calls, pot, $50, four calls. Pot is like $250. I have AdJs9d9c, V (young Asian reg) has about the same.

Flop: 7s8d2d, checks to V who pots, one other call and I call.

Turn ($750) 7s8d2d 9s, I check, V pots, fold, and I repot for ~$1,100 on top (a little more than V’s stack). He goes into the tank. Another guy finally calls clock, which he is fine with. They count him down and he folds ☹ He says he folded a set, which I believe.

Then I win a big bomb pot (~$1,500) with nut straight and two pair.

Good fold:
One limp, I limp UTG+1 w/ 9c8c7s6d, pot, calls.

Flop (~$75): Th8s8d, I check, checks around.
Turn (~$75): Th8h8d 6h, I bet $50, two calls, then a middle-aged woman who’s been a bit erratic (she went all in oh bomb pot w/ $400 w/ basically nothing but non-nut draws) but on the tighter side pots. We all fold and she shows TT.

Nice - thanks for posting.

First game back home, 1/2 PLO, up $1,800. It should have been more (as pictured -- in for $800), but I didn't leave when I planned. Takes a little sting off the Vegas loss!

Very nice!!

Red is definitely your color!

Great TR as always-appreciate the effort you made in letting us follow along. Sucks that you ran bad in cards most of the trip, but glad you had a nice win at the end!

Thanks, everyone. It was a great weekend at home -- besides the $1,800 on Friday, I won $800 playing 1/3 NLHE on Saturday and $1,500 playing 1/2 PLO last night! I'm back 😀

Can't wait to go back to Vegas. Not sure when it's going to be, but I hope before next fall.

Now that's what I'm talking about!

Looking forward to the next TR!
