The NHL Thread
For the 5 of us who post NHL stuff, here you go. Officially the season starts Tuesday October 11, although there were tw
Sweet .333 sv% for Oettinger
Coach Pete DeBust
ok so you made me go look it up and stars 5v5 xg for that series: 58%, 64%, 79%, 52%, 45%, 43%, 69%
dominant in 4 games, better in 5, slightly worse in 2. so yeah, pretty dominant overall. i guess that's why i remembered it that way, because i watched a bunch of it. plus how they almost didn't trail in the avs series.
so what? was it worth nitpicking that? even though it was irrelevant to my point of "how are the loilers doing this to everyone?" i don't mean to bag on you because this place has
I just don’t see how you can get dominated in a series and drag it out 7 games unless you’ve just had magical Hasek-esque goaltending, which I don’t think was the case in that series. I’m not trying to nitpick, but if I see something questionable, I might question it [emoji2369]
1st period xg: 88% stars
2nd period xg: 74% stars
score: 2-0 loilers
special teams and goaltending, lol hockey
3rd period xg is literally 100% stars so far lmao
the turtle to end all turtles (never go full loilers)
Feels like Dallas is gonna win.
No offense from Edm.
insane SOG difference. and that doesn't include the stars hitting the post a few times. I really thought they were going to tie it up late but it wasn't meant to be.
onward to the SCF we go.
early to win the cup price (from Draftkings): florida -125 edmonton +105
loilers/stars game 6: xg 83% stars
best* oilers xg: broberg 48%, mcdavid 29%, perry 26%, nugent-hopkins 22%, holloway 22%
worst oilers xg: ryan 0%, brown 0%, janmark 7%, ceci 11%, ekholm 12%
* - kane was 100% but left the game after getting injured, i excluded him because he only played 4 minutes at 5v5
loilers got a lead and sat on it. one of the luckier games of the playoffs, run hotter. no but seriously, please don't
best stars xg: bourque 95%, robertson 93%, harley 91%, stankoven 89%, johnston 88%
worst stars xg: patrovic 19%, suter 72%, marchment 73%, seguin 78%, steel 79%
petrovic was the only guy not going, so they limited him to 6 minutes at 5v5. everyone else was dominant. can i say that? 72%+ xg ... dominant? i'll say it. and hey shout out bourque drawing in for the worst player and being the best in game 6. probably won't give him much comfort over the summer, but it's better than nothing
Dumb AF 6 day break
early finals stuff:
panthers series xg for east final vs rangers: 49%, 48%, 69%, 73%, 69%, 64%
very slightly outplayed the first couple games, but once they figured some things out it was gg. the final will probably come down to if lolbob can submarine this strong team or not
oilers xg for the west final by game: 56%, 59%, 37%, 60%, 61%, 17%
they were slightly better in 4/6 games, somewhat lucky this series isn't going to a game 7.
5v5 score & venue adjusted xg for playoffs:
1. panthers - 55%
7. oilers - 51%
panthers were only 1 point better in the regular season
goaltending is kind of a wash. panthers also have home ice, should be favs.
wild card is special teams. the oilers powerplay has been very effective in the playoffs, only slightly behind the avs, but far better than everyone else. the panthers powerplay has been just ok (was good during the season). and the oilers have also had the best penalty kill in the playoffs.
oilers pp 14.46 goals per 60 (10.48 in regular season)
oilers pk 2.05 goals against per 60 (7.46 in regular season)
so basically their special teams are running hot by 9-10 goals per 60 in the playoffs, and afaik special teams pdo is similar to regular pdo, so don't be surprised if this rungood comes crashing down to hell in the final. or they're blessed by god/satan, who's to say
related: the panthers have had the 2nd best pk in the playoffs and were 3rd best in the regular season, so they might be up to the challenge here
I realise this is setting up a "the things the Oilers do well lead to a 106 PDO" joke, but maybe Leon's goal line one timer is a bit underrated by xG since no one else is able to hit it and McDavid draws everyone to himself setting it up. It's gone cold recently through so what do I know
Seeing the Oil get dominated yesterday I thought you can always hope for a Bob meltdown... totally forgot who's in goal for Edmonton
¯\_(ツ😉_/¯
Like WTF Dallas.
Today's prediction, FLA, because that makes the Jets the team that lost to the team that lost to the team that lost to the team that lost the SCF.
The only thing I can think is Edmonton's team defence is very good at doing what they need to do to win, moving the puck.
It doesn't matter if they don't do what they don't need to do if the other team can't force them to do those things.
I thought Dallas looked great at limiting McDavid (get in front of him, then force him off the puck and into the corner), but Dallas couldn't stay in the O-Zone long enough to generate anything, or get the puck in dangerous positions, or tip the pucks going to the net, or have people in front of the net, or get any rebounds.
There's more to it, like not having easy entries and the play in the neutral zone, but I would need to watch it a lot closer than I did. Dallas was great at passing in the neutral zone, great clean possession, but not in the O-zone.
Oilers didn’t deserve it . Florida has to be the favourite but we said that about Dallas
Canada needs it Go Oilers
So is anyone cheeting for Florida?
Think everyone I know IRL is cheering Oilers.
i would support winnipeg, ottawa and montreal in the final. but alberta and toronto can go **** themselves
go panthers, #1 fan over here
everyone has their own rules and reasons for this deal ldo
As posted I did pick Florida to win it all before playoffs started but am cheering for Edmonton, Mcdavid might stay now.😉 It will help a cup win to stay in that dump of a city, LOL.
The Oilers won Game 6, 2-1 over Dallas, while being outshot 35-10–the third-fewest shots on goal in recorded history by a winning team in the playoffs, and the fewest shots of any Oiler team since the 1979 NHL-WHA merger.
play bad, get there
This Stanley Cup Final, Edmonton to Miami (well, Sunrise), 2,541 miles, the longest distance between two NHL cities in Finals history, and because there are no direct flights between the two towns, your mileage will vary. And the closest direct flight you can get, in or out of Orlando, only operates on Saturdays.
i know a lot of teams have their own plane, but not all. anyone know if these guys do?
regardless i'd imagine they're at least chartering planes, and that they can fly direct to miami, but that's just my dumb guess. anyone know for sure?

Longest flight in cup history. The league is spacing games 3 days apart because of this when they have to travel Cup could go as long as June 24th
No idea on their own planes
Does that matter? Difference between your own plane and flying charter is probably the same as driving your own Chevy Malibu and renting one from Avis.
The "no direct flights" obviously refers to no direct commercial flights. Taylor Swift has a direct flight to Kansas City from wherever she wants to. And apparently flies charter instead of on her own plane because she doesn't want for people to track her.
Edit: they're obviously not flying commercial, this is not the WNBA.

Oh it matters teams that have their own planes have custom luxurious seating while a charter has standard seats
