Edit: RULES FOR THIS THREAD
Posting guidelines for Politics and Soci...
These are our baselines. We're not reinventing the wheel here. If you aren't sure if something is acceptable to post, its better to ask first. If you think someone is posting something that violates the above guidelines, please report it or PM me rather than responding in kind.
To reiterate some of the points:
1. No personal attacks. This is a broad instruction, but, in general, we want to focus on attacking an argument rather than the poster making it. It is fine to say a post is antisemitic; it is not okay to call someone an antisemite over and over. If you believe someone is making antisemitic posts, report them or PM me. The same goes for calling people "baby killers" and "genocide lovers". You are allowed to argue that an action supports genocide or that the consequences of certain policies results in the death of children, but we are no longer going to be speaking to one another's intentions. It is not productive to the conversation and doesn't further any debate.
2. Racist posts and other bigoted statements that target a particular group or individuals of such groups with derogatory comments are not allowed. This should not need further explanation.
3. Graphic Images need to be in spoilers with a trigger warning.
4. Wishing Harm on other posters will result in an immediate timeout.
5. Genocidal statements such as "Kill 'em all" etc, are no longer permissible in the thread.
If anyone has any questions about the above, please PM me. I don't want a discussion about the rules to derail the content of this thread. If anything needs clarifying, I will do that in this thread.
Please be aware this thread is strictly moderated
The White House has grown anxious about Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming address to a joint session of Congress, believing the Israeli prime minister could use the forum to criticize President Joe Biden for not supporting the retaliation against Hamas in Gaza enough.
The speech next month could create a diplomatically complicated and politically dicey spectacle for a president running for reelection. Fears among West Wing aides have grown in recent days as Netanyahu has made a series of public statements — including one in a video address delivered in English — accusing the administration of withholding more military aid than has been publicly disclosed.
“[Netanyahu’s] video this week was not helpful at all,” said one senior official, who was granted anonymity to speak candidly about internal deliberations. “And he could make it far worse up there in front of Congress.”
Another senior official put it more bluntly: “No one knows what he’s going to say.”
Frictions have deepened between Biden and Netanyahu since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, with Biden aides increasingly believing that the Israeli leader is prolonging the conflict to stay in power — and that he would prefer Donald Trump return to the White House. And the war has created a thorny political dilemma for Biden, who has been slammed by Republicans for insufficiently supporting Israel yet at the same time also taken heat from some members of his own party for not protecting Palestinian civilians.
But the accusations lobbed by Netanyahu over the past few days have put the relationship at a new nadir, taking the West Wing by surprise and leaving Biden aides deeply frustrated, according to the officials. The Biden administration postponed a high-level U.S.-Israel meeting on Iran after the release of Netanyahu’s video.
on the other hand
its kind of weird that the media says they have tension when the US has been shipping weapons faster than they can make them and allowed red line after red line to be crossed.

I think it's what I mentioned a while ago. Netanyahu is leveraging the threat of trump ro force Bidens hand
Netanyahu wants to avoid the risk of trump losing. In poker terms irs a great semi bluff.
its def possible that Bibi is the driving force. but it also seems that the USA is just doing what it wants to do and it wants this genocide and further Lebanon War. which would just make all of this Kabuki theater as they say, so that the USA can pay lib service to the large contingent on the left and right that dont want war.
Happy you're back Vic it's been a long month without you.

neither the US or Israel want genocide in israel
genocide is not occuring in gaza
every single time you say it i will correct you
NYT and the UN reported on the metal rods. (eta, actually I cant remember if it was in the UN report. it was def in the NYT)
Al Jazeera reported on the dogs.
you can choose to believe it or not. but its in the mainstream press at this point.
keep posting lies and bullshit it hurts your credibility
it's awesome to have you back
If there is no longer a threat from Palestine then the Israeli right would lose its appeal.
You do realize they are still shooting rockets at Israel. Along with 4 other countries/groups.
When you are being attacked by 5 countries/quasi-states at once, that all vow your destruction, and the one directly on your southern border that is still attacking you but is temporarily weakened; I dont think it works to say "you have to lay off them while they keep attacking you" because they aren't took strong at the moment.
That being said, the UN is a corrupt clown show that has completely delegitimized itself innumerable times over the decades; so it can rule however it wants, and everyone can just continue to ignore it.

Lebanon declared war on Israel a long time ago. They have illegally crossed a line they agreed not to cross during the last cease fire, and have been attacking Israel constantly. And promise to destroy Israel.
At this point it is just a matter of Israel deciding how the counter attack is going to go.
My understanding is the Israeli right was fast losing its appeal pre 10/7, because they weren't doing a great job running the country and Netanyahu was under investigation for corruption.
Seems what has happened the last few months is Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis, Iran giving the Israeli right a lifeline, for their own reasons.

The United Nations General Assembly passed more resolutions critical of Israel than against all other nations combined in 2022, contributing to what observers call an ongoing lopsided focus on the Jewish state at the world body.
The General Assembly approved 15 anti-Israel resolutions last year, versus 13 resolutions criticizing other countries, according to a tally by the pro-Israel monitoring group UN Watch.
Russia was the focus of six resolutions condemning its invasion of Ukraine. North Korea, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Syria, Iran and the US were hit with one resolution each.
This was a year before the war
The un is biased against Israel and Israel should ignore any ruling they make
who is winning? Hamas is still in power. fighters are still killing Israeli soldiers every day. only 6? hostages have been recovered by force while over 100 remain. tunnels remain operational
this article claims 80% of the tunnels remain. Israel has not achieved any of their war aims. they have achieved the death of tons of civilians and the destruction of all infrastructure but its yet to help them with their ostensible war aims.

If hamas is winning the no reason to complain about the casualty count. It's what hamas wants

Lebanon has been explicit. stop the plausible genocide (ICJ) or war of extermination (UN) and they will stop the rockets.
it is noteworthy that Lebanon has not been targeting civilians and afaik have not killed any. conversely, Israel has murdered a lot of Lebanese civilians, children, and medical workers. while Israel is killing civilians, Lebanon is dismantling the Israeli air defenses.
Al Jazeera reported that survivors said it.
Just like they reported that survivors said they had been raped by electric rods months before the NYT and the UN wrote about it.
Just like they reported that survivors said they had been amputated due to neglect and abuse months before Haaretz and CNN reported on it.
Maybe these are just lies. But it would be the first time.
That's a super credible source, Im finding some amazing stuff looking through their page

Nothing new there. Has been the case for decades. The UN has basically just become a forum for the loser countries of the world that have failed the challenge of modernity to all team up and criticize the liberal world order.

Lebanon did not attack rape and kidnap Israelis on October 7

That is declaring war. You feel they are sincere and have declared war on Israel for a just cause. Sane people will disagree. But they have declared war, and now Israel is deciding how to respond. Or maybe they already have.

the source is Dr Munir Al Barsh, Director General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, relaying what he heard from multiple survivors (aka not Hamas otherwise they would not have been released) to Al Jazeera. theres a video in that tweet and dozen of other twitter accounts.
fwiw I am not sure what that video that you linked is showing.
USA is not going to let Israel fend for itself. USA also clearly does not want an all out war with Lebanon. These are not at all contradictory.
Israel hasn't responded to Lebanon yet. They are in a poor position to do so, and I'm pretty sure Israel realizes a mediocre response is worse than no response at all. A number of airstrikes isn't going to cut it either. They are best off not entering Lebanon, but I doubt that will happen.
