Remember that the linesman + referee changed their own mind and ruled it offside, I don't think VAR is to blame for letting their call stand. The linesman probably saw the ball pass by in front of clearly offside positioned Dumfries, and didn't realize how far behind him Maignan was and how quick it all went.

The problem is that to conclude that a player who is literally between the ball and the goalkeeper is NOT (meaningfully) offside they would have to, if only in the slightest, judge the goalkeeper's ability to get to the ball in time (in the counterfactual scenario that Dumfries isn't there to literally block or even distract the goalkeeper), which you really don't want them to have to do.

Something that happens more often: when a quick player or renowned finisher is fouled en route to 1v1, they surely award a DOGSO more often than if the exact same foul was against a conspicuously slow or bad player - but I don't think that is right.

Having said that, if France score this goal I'm pretty sure it counts (linesman never interferes or VAR does).
