Joseph Heller still dead, still at 76 (and other celebrity deaths): RIP Hank Aaron and Willie Mays
When an interviewer told Mr. Heller that he had never written anything as good as ''Catch-22,'' the author shot back, ''Who has?''
I get years confused, but I think I saw this in a coffee shop/club in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh-- ~1970 or 1971. All the white audience were sitting there trying to grasp what was happening, but our black brothers were howling. Martin Mull single-handedly made me proud to be a chuck dude.
RIP man, I'm sad to see you go. You handled the stiletto so skillfully.
Robert Towne, Chinatown write and famous script doctor, 89. Chinatown really is a perfect script.

Towne seems to have rivaled Ben Hetch as the guy called in to fix scripts. He also, in addition to Chinatown, wrote and directed Personal Best, which, not exactly groundbreaking, was a different kind of sports film.

I guess I'm one of the non-graspers. I watched the beginning of that video but found nothing entertaining, was bored after a few minutes so turned it off. I don't remember seeing him in anything that I liked either.
I assume we've all read The Big Goodbye about the making of the script and movie. RIP

Chinatown, my favorite mainstream movie of the last half of the twentieth century. Some of the dialogue is as good as that in Hills Like White Elephants, particularly between Huston and Nicholson at the Albacore Club. Thank you Robert Towne.
Alice Munro, author, dead at age 92, on Monday, May 13, 2024, at Port Hope, Ontario, Canada.
Fixing my own post: Alice Munro, author who blamed her 9 year old daughter for being sexually molested by Munro's then husband, on Monday May 13, 2024, at Port Hope, Ontario, Canada.
Despite all this, Skinner wrote, Munro went back to Fremlin and remained with him for the rest of his life.
“She said that she had been ‘told too late,’” Skinner wrote, that “she loved him too much, and that our misogynistic culture was to blame if I expected her to deny her own needs, sacrifice for her children and make up for the failings of men. She was adamant that whatever had happened was between me and my stepfather. It had nothing to do with her.”
What a disgusting person. And blaming the "misogynistic culture" for a woman who could easily support herself staying with a man who abused her own daughter.
Shelly Duval, iconic and oddly endearing actress, 75.
What a screen presence. RIP
Loved her series, Fairy Tale Theater
oddly endearing, well put
She made such a seamless transition from preacher's wife to hooker in McCabe and Mrs Miller.
Also the creative force behind 4 rather fine anthology series: Fairy Tale Theatre (the best of the bunch), Tall Tales and Legends, Nightmare Classics (I really like their attempt at 'Turn of the Screw' with Amy Irving and a young but very charismatic Balthazar Getty), and Bedtime Stories.
Dr. Ruth and Richard Simmons.
Both had that ability to appeal, somehow, to wide audiences.

Actress Shannen Doherty, 51.
Cancer sucks.
Heathers is so good.
Depressing to hear of someone younger than me dying of natural causes, sure makes me feel old.
she's literally my age. whenever I hear about someone my age dying of cancer/natural causes it really makes me think about my own mortality and this sick feeling that my clock is getting a lot closer to :00.
yup. plus she was a star (for a while at least) on a couple of extremely successful TV series. if u r in a certain age demographic range (i.e. mine), u definitely were familiar with shannen doherty.
James B. Sikking, long-time character actor in shows like Hill Street Blues, and Doogie Howzer's dad, at 90.

Wait until you hit 60 and you realize you might not have much time left. Depressing.
But when it hit 70, somehow I felt liberated. At 60 it's a feeling. At 70 I knew it and decided I want to make the best of it. I'm trying because that feeling becomes knowledge.
