British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.

Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.

Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

Grant Schapps out

Grant Schapps out

That's the annoying thing about this one, not sure I said here or elsewhere, but so many of the ultimate über****s in Con that I would love to see lose their seat have cried off trying to retain it. Hopefully we get Hunt later

Big win for Corbyn

Carla Denyer beats culture secretary, Thangam Debbonaire.

Fantastic result

I mean so far there's nothing much happened, looks like Con/Ref are doing a fair bit better (especially in the latter case) than expected, but Labour are getting the huge majority as expected. The question is what happens when, as I expect to be the case, we get midway through the Max Headroom premiership and on anything substantial, absolutely nothing has changed. Thoughts?

People have different ideas on what your substantial means.

If as I expect you’re talking about immigration and the boats then the France election results will be very interesting.

If someone else was thinking of support for the worst off, a functional NHS and housing market and adequate utility companies they’ll probably be disappointed.

I was in Waltham Cross the other day, and my god what a total shithole a normal working class suburb of London has become under austerity, the people looking for all the world as if they’d been beaten up and robbed. Which metaphorically of course they have.

Rebuilding is a huge task that’s clearly beyond Starmer, a drone with no imagination.

Getting only mid 30s percent of the vote against this widely reviled government is a failure not a success and looks ominous for 2029.

Weirdo victorian pipe cleaner with delusions of grandeur is no more.

REJOICE

Sounds like Truss is out, thoroughly deserved of course.

Labour sweeping to victory, increasing their vote share by... 1.5%?

Truss gone! Really is the icing on the cake.

Huge parliamentary majority masking the story of a country divided into two wrt share of the vote, one progressive minded the other reactionary.

In reality though both views are often found to coexist in the same person. NewerLabour will probably attempt to reflect this.

I do wonder what the result would have been if Farage hadn’t entered. Everyone would likely be talking about how Labour was underperforming.

His stated aim is to take control of the Tory party and they might have to allow it to prevent him from splitting their vote again next time.

So the SNP results were as bad as the exit poll predicted. Excellent. There will be a fair bit of infighting as the ones who've lost their seats try to get into Hollyrood for the 2026 elections.

Underperforming is being very generous

currently 34% vote share (Corbyn got 40% and 32% in his attempts as pm)

Tories + reform got 38%

Lots of shytories out there lying to pollsters again, as expected.

Re the discussions about vote share it’s been a completely different picture in Scotland. Labour have increased by 17.1%. The SNP have lost more than the Conservatives reducing by 15.1% and 12.3% respectively.

He is coming after labour voters, And young voters.

Even a pact (stated or not) where they dont stand against each other seems very plausible. It would destroy labour if they dont improve their standing or lose any groun

What does that first sentence say?

I’d imagine conversations between Farage and Braverman over the next few days will be interesting.

He is targeting labour voters. He said so in his speach and he means it. Also he is targeting young voters.

He has far greater ambition than just old right wing voters

Interview with Rees-Mogg early on, before he lost his seat, had him arse-kissing Farage. Sign of things to come imo.

Lolz of the night

Tories and SNP
Truss turning up late for the results announcement and getting slow hand clapped, then losing
JRM losing his seat

Best speech of the night: Robert Buckland, railing about clowns (eg Suella Braverman)

Glad the Lib-Dems have finally flushed away the floater that was the Clegg legacy

If labour ignore immigration issues (or worse pull the 'racist/bigot' card on anyone who tries to talk about it), then labour will get ****ed up next election by the little tin-pots on the right.

You stop listening to people, you allow the fascists with easy answers to creep in....

I DGAF about immigration, but I am sick and tired of it being such a part of the discourse because TPTB don't tackle it (or tackle the reasons people feel they are being side-lined by immigrant numbers where they live)
