the game is the game
I was living devilish. Back in 2020 the pandemic nearly killed me. I caught the bug and it wasn't the airborne kind. It was in my mind. It's all good though. Incoming cringe new age philosophy speak: I had to lose myself in order to find myself. So that's what I did. Can't go into detail about that year just yet. Maybe never. Some things Bobby Peru just has to take to the grave with him.
At the start of 2021, I was still unsure of what direction I was headed. So near the end of January I ate 2g of psilocybin mushrooms and had an epiphany: I shall dedicate my life to poker. Up to that point, poker wasn't the only thing in my life that I tried to master but it was the only craft that I returned to time and time again since I first fell in love with the game watching John Juanda beat some old geezer in Tunica on ESPN Thanksgiving 2002. Before the hole cams. I'm an OG for real for real.
So around middle of Feb of 2021 I started grinding. Started slow at first just playing 10blitz on ACR and ****ing around on StarsPA. Played a $20 10k and shipped it for $1k. Ran up another $800 that night playing ppl HU and 3 and 4 max and said okay, I got a roll now I'm going to grind 50nl for a month like an actual pro and see what happens. Crushed it in March for 10bb/100 but then regression to the mean hit me. Kind of broke even for April and May and wasn't sure if I was even any good so I decided to start shopping for a CFP.
Ended up talking to the head honcho of a brand new start up called Nachos Poker. After talking with Patrick for an hour I just knew in my gut that this was the one. Best decision of my poker career. Wish I would've done it sooner but everything comes in due time. So I spent June learning and applying the strategy and in July I was officially on stake and part of the team. I spent the first 3 months going through small ups and big downs. I just couldn't seem to put it all together. After a decent September I was ready to shot 100nl in October and that whole month I fully popped off and ran like a god. November paled in comparison but it was still good enough to start shotting 200nl in December.
With the holidays approaching and with Mrs. Peru and the baby Peru's to look after I took a sizable profit split and was excited to end the year on a high note. The gods had other plans. I lost 30 stacks that month. With the cash out it felt like I lost 60 stacks. 2021 ended with a thud but I was determined to right the ship and take all that I learned that year and run it back in the new year.
My poor mindset and lack of professionalism were my biggest setbacks last year so my main focus for 2022 is to bring my A game for every day, every session, every hour, every hand etc...I'm pretty confident that when I'm in my zone I'm at minimum a 6evbb/100 winner so my goal is to cultivate that zone at all times and to stay in it for as long as possible and pump out that quality volume. January started back licking my wounds at 50nl but ended with shottaking 200nl. February I played mostly 200nl with 100nl mixed in to fill tables. 70% of my volume for March has been 200nl and I can now confidently say that after a shaky start I have stuck the landing. I've always felt like 200nl is the entry point into the league. Like being drafted and now you're playing out your rookie contract in hopes of landing a life changing deal. And now 12 months later, here I am and I'm ready to show and prove that I belong.
I'm making this now because during the many and many downswings and setbacks that I've experienced throughout this first year I would read countless poker blogs by the greats of the game for inspiration. It is my hope that one day this thread will serve to inspire another up and coming poker player on there journey through the chaos.
My main goals are to just play A game and be in that endboss mentality 24/7. OTB sht. Secondary goals are to play 1knl by years end and to go to my first WSOP this summer. Also need to get back on the fitness and diet grind. I crash and burn with this often. Let's rock.
The game is the game my friends.
Always.

Just went trough all posts of this high quality blog and desperately need this update! 😀
Are you cooking any updates?
Alright. Time to kick the tires on this silly little thread with a 30 day challenge for August. I need some accountability and what better place than here.
I've been slacking for too long now and the chickens have come home to roost. This should be a good finale to the thread. I'll either ride off into the sunset or bow out with my head down in shame and embarassment.
July was a bad month overall as my volume was low, patience was thin and alcohol consumption was high. So the challenge is simply to average 5 hours of play every day and zero alcohol. I'll be posting daily results starting tomorrow.
As my favorite vlogger likes to say, "The grind starts now!"
Glad to see you back. I've taken a bit of time off myself but am trying to get back into the grind. Good luck
Ty Koss and to the guys above. Appreciate yall.
DAY 1
Played around 6 hours and felt very swingy whole time. First 90 minutes was heat and then rest of time was mostly aggravating. I'm just now seeing the results and it's much better than I expected so feels like a win now. Perspective is crazy. Did good with diet and no beer and had a good day at the gym. Used a lifting belt for the first time and WOW what a difference it made in my squat and deadlift. I have lower back issues and mentally always have it in back of my head so it felt awesome to not feel any pain and able to direct my energy into perfect form.
Have been consistent with the gym since March with a few setbacks here and there but just like life I'm not giving it my all and putting myself in the best position to reach my full potential. I keep sabotaging myself with diet/beer and last month made too many excuses to not show up. Have a solid foundation tho and see this month being a huge breakthrough in my fitness if I can stay on track.
Running on fumes today. Drove Mrs. Peru to work so woke up to an alarm this morning (Oh, the horror!). Only got about 4 hours of sleep but I'm wide awake now. Probably go g ym soon. Might take a nap after. See how I feel. Son's basketball team made the playoffs in their summer league. Do or die game tonight at 8. Proud of the kid.
Hopefully the morning games pop off today so I can get my hours out of the way. Gonna be a LONG day but we locked in.

You probably won't remember me as I used to post under another sn, but from all 2p2ers, you are the one who helped me the most: a very kind gesture when I was struggling to move up to 10nl, and the most insightful thing anyone ever told me in poker:
Hope you're doing well BobbyPeru, GLGL!

Thanks man. We are always fighting our inner nit. Glad to see you're doing better. If you are who I think you are 😉
DAY 2
Overall:
Very rough day. Got rekt left and right. From experience when blue line tanks like this it just means the deck is against you and there is nothing you can do about it but use it as a way to strengthen your sanity. Nothing new for me. Just gotta keep the RL strong and wait for the BL heat. Played about 4.5 hours. Still on target. On the bright side, the games were really really really f'ing good. Sometimes the house gotta lose to keep em' coming back.
Never took that nap. Hit the gym for a quick but intense shoulder day and then off to my son's game. They lost but they fought hard. Motivation for next season.
Still have the wife to pick up from work and then I can finally sleep. Looking forward to it.

DAY 3
OVERALL
And the beats continue. Played 4 hours of mostly frustrating poker. Punched the desk (light punch nothing crazy) and was wearing a hat and slammed it on the floor after one certain hand. Actually, the desk punch was more of a hammer fist like a judge slamming the gavel to close up court. Anyways, surprised to see I was actually up at one point during the session but it all went to poop after that. All things considered, I'm feeling good about how I'm playing and how I'm handling adversity. Would I rather not have fits of rage and slam **** once in a while? Of course. But I'm also not one of those nerd soyboi bots that whispers out "Oh, that's unfortunate" after a bad beat. I am what I am. And right now despite some tilty outbursts I'm doing a good job of getting punched in the face but still moving forward.
Taking a day off from gym so I'll have most of the day for a big Sunday grind so that is the plan. I have a treadmill in the garage so I'll look to get some steps in between sessions. Have a few bucks on Global so I'll probably try my luck at one of the mid sized prize pools and see what happens. Been a while since I FTed anything. Gambler's fallacy. I'm due.
Glad I started this back up. Feels nice to get my grind on and then wake up next day and write about it and then attack the day. I need structure in my life and this is helping with that.

DAY 4
OVERALL
Got 7 hours of cash and more of the same. Got mauled once again. Also bricked a Global 25k in ~100th. After getting stacked with KK I finally threw up the white flag and quit for the day. You know it's getting bad when you're going to primedope and doing variance sims. NEWSFLASH: This is normal a small % of the time.
Also went through my results for the past year and found that in June I went on a $2175 downswing in 10 hours. In May I went -$2553 over another 10 hour stretch. In April I started the first 7 hours of the month -$2104. In March I had a 7 hour stretch where I was -$2288 and in February I again started the first 6 hours of that month stuck $2023. So this is the worst stretch I've had all year but not by much. The part that is hard to wrap my head around is: when will it end? We can never know for certain.
Hopped on the treadmill afterward and felt so much better. Took a hot shower and could barely keep my eyes open and got some decent sleep. Normally after a day like this I would just shoot to the store and grab a 6 pack and wash away my sorrows. Not today tho. Guess day 4 was a win after all.
Today is my birthday. Wife has to work so we plan to celebrate tomorrow on her day off but her folks are gonna take the kids later today and I'm undecided on whether I should use the time alone to take a break from poker and chill or to use that time to grind a few hours. Undecided for now. I'll play it by ear.
For now I'm omw to the gym for leg day and squats. Excited to see what I can do with the belt.

honestly a lot of these hands are questionable, and maybe a product of tilt. when I downswing I often nit it up due to lack of confidence, but you may be doing the opposite. Might be smart to put in a 2-3 day break.
And btw primedope is good, but understand that it may say that running like this is like 1.5% chance or something, but you also have to consider what is the chance you will have a stretch like this over a sample of say 100k hands. Then the chances are much higher, of course you know that variance like this is inevitable even for 5-6bb winners
Good luck with leg day and glgl
Happy Bday mate!
My incredible hot take on variance is:
Like watching a horror movie where you suspend disbelief for a cheap thrill then just get on with your life afterwards. A nothingness. Pure cloud.
A3 turn raise seems not to accomplish much. Also 3 betting KJo vs UTG (12.75 pfr) and then bet/calling river? Definitely a punt. Check call is one thing, but what is the reason behind betting if we're gonna call the raise.
We also 3b KTo BvB which imo is not gonna be better than call. We should construct our SB range in a polar manner.
K8 is yes highly questionable.
I get these games are pretty wild but need to be sharp about why we are doing things. For example the KJo we 3b probably bc we see guy has 46 vpip so we assume he's loose. But he has only 12.75% PFR so you are kind of punting against a strong range.
If we're not bluffing missed hearts on the K8hh hand, are we bluffing anything? Unless there is any MDA datapoint that we shouldn't reopen as a bluff, the hand seemed fine to me.
The jam on the flop with the JJ is the hh I didn't really understand.
On the bright side hopefully your opponents are as confused as we are
KJ hand 13% pfr fish doesn't mean they open like top 8% utg so it's fine vs many fishies. River is definitely puntsville, nobody bluffs this size and you beat almost nothing
A3o you have to raise a lot vs small turn donks often with complete garbage
3-betting KTo bvb is higher EV than flat vs like 80% of 200nl regs so whatevs
K8 is whatever, maybe people just jam 22/33 for 1/2 left but you can win by checking

club/AKQ/4/8 coming off is pretty bad and you can still get called by worse a ton jamming
Re: JJ hand, my bad. I can see it now, ty @TripleBerryJam

The questionable part is that we are taking these aggressive lines when it seems like the majority of the hands are vs. recs or shitregs.
Btw I disagree w the KTo, it's a small point, but the fact that regs are overfolding vs. 3bs here doesn't mean we should just go crazy with all our range, imo it means we should construct an even more polar range because more of our EV comes from bluffing preflop. And KTo is bad bc even bad regs should still continue KQ/AT pure and other hands that dominate us, if we get him to fold K9o and T9o it's no real victory, whereas if we 3b K7o/K6o for example we fold out a ton of his better Kx and his A 7/6.
Can't figure out how to multi quote so just gonna say it here but ty to all for the feedback. Ty @Ceres for the bday love. Ty @wereallgonnamakeit for the feedback. As for the hands I think @TripleBerryJam summed everything up quite nicely. I gotta hit you with the Uno reverse card on the disagree about KTo. I know in theory against a reg this is not the greatest combo to 3b bvb but this guy was 55/25 and raise called with K3o so I'm quite happy with my play against this player profile.
As for the KJo hand. Yeah it looks bad and I agree it doesn't make sense to bluff and then decide to bluffcatch (LMAO sounds ridiculous typing it out haha) but just had some crazy meta with this whale and have certain stats on my HUD that are quite accurate in determining how hard a player is blasting postflop and I thought the chances he had an Ace were low and it was literally an 8 or nada. Sucks the hands weren't reversed. Or I could've just rebluffed, damn.
To @Peace&Love we can jam at high freq on these straight connected boards but it has to be very low texture like the hand in question or flops where a straight is possible to the J or the Q like J97 or QT8. The more gaps the better I'd imagine. I'll have to double check myself to brush up on it. I know it's good for these LP battles but not sure about tighter formations I'll have to double check that as well. Also the Lord DDP mentioned we can donk high freq as OOP on these boards so that's something else I'd like to explore since he brought it up.
hahahaha i hope so too
DAY 5
OVERALL
So the day started off well and went to the gym for leg day. Unfortunately, my back started having issues after the 2nd set so I had to change course and take it somewhat easy for the rest of my workout. Was a bit frustrated because it was only 150lb which is not super heavy when it comes to squats but I talked with a gymbro friend and he told me it happens to him to and sometimes we just have to figure out what works best for our bodies and it's okay to move down if you have to or just scrap the exercise all together and strengthen the deficiency another way and go back to it a later time. Could be that I didn't take enough time between my last squat day and it was just too soon to stress my back out like that again. Lesson learned and will play it by ear for now. Still had a good workout all things considered.
Got home and took it easy and must've been gassed from the workout because I ended up passing tf out and taking a late nap. Got up and had some birthday cake and was pretty excited to grind a few hours. Planned on playing for 2-3 hours only BUT I had a standard hand that tilted tf out of me and then folded river in a spot that is probably never a fold in theory (idk havent checked yet) but folded anyways because I couldn't stand the thought of losing more money and I just knew I was drawing. I think what tilted me the most was that I tanked for a bit deciding on whether to check or bet flop and I really wanted to check but saw he had a 3% xr and said to myself, "Ahh just bet he's just not going to XR you all that often here." Boy was I wrong. Had to rack up immediately after that. Patience is wearing thin and I hate playing when I'm feeling too emotional like that. Any other day I just snap call river and don't think twice about it.
I actually think that is one of my strengths is that I can't stand to play poker when I'm tilted. If I don't have the patience to deal with the many types of losing that happens in the course of a session then I'll just snap quit. You'll never see me tilt chasing my losses playing for 20 hours trying to rostucko (which is a trait I do envy). The problem though is that I can linger in that state of mind for days on end until I finally feel at peace enough to try again and that whole time I kind of hate myself for not being resilient enough to just get tf over it.
Anyways, did some more therapy by looking at old blogs of my favorite legends and finding comfort in the fact that these legendary crushers also go on +20bi downswings if it's normal for it to happen to them then of course it is more than normal for it to happen to me. This too shall pass.
Just got back from the gym and did a lighter workout as my back is still a little sore but felt good. Son came with and practiced box jumps to help with his vertical. Plan is to just take the day off, bring my son to a basketball camp and just chill and relax for real. Oh yeah, and I'm still drink free. All in all, I'm happy af with how life is going right now and will be focused on bringing a clear mind to the tables tomorrow. The rest is out of my hands.

DAY 6-9
OVERALL
Slacking on the updates because I had a few rough days sleep wise. Had to wake up to an alarm the last two days and something about waking up when I'm not ready to just completely destroys my sleep schedule. Fitness has been going good. I'm crushing it in the gym and doing better with my diet and still alcohol free and it's starting to feel like more of the norm like I can actually live this kind of lifestyle and be happy with it. I'm getting leaner so seeing those improvements visually helps to motivate me stay the course. I'm not too far off from having some abs pop off.
Poker wise atm I feel like an athlete coming off a major surgery and getting on the field for the first time. I was feeling a little gun shy and have been playing a more pacified version of my normal strategy but I'm starting to feel like I'm getting my sea legs back under me. Volume fell off this week but that's ok. If I hit my form again soon I'll look to make it up then.
Plan for today is gym and 4 hours of poker. If I feel like playing more then I will.
Some good advice keeping me sane lately:
https://www.mobiuspoker.com/blog/how-to-...
Good advice. I like to imagine my stack is 500BB with infinite lives because technically it is
Lately I'm trying to be quite nazi about what thoughts are permitted during a session too, and anything 'narrative' related like looking at stack for anything other than as a spot variable is basically satan.
Earn your keep brainwaves! Stop slacking off you unenlightened little shits
(p.s. good work RE booze. I have different vices but my mate is also quitting a lifetime habit and even though he wouldn't admit I have noticed a new maturity and clearheadedness, vastly outperforming a few prob inevitable teething problems)

That's a smart way to think about it.

Thanks. I'm starting to feel the same way as your friend.
DAY 10
OVERALL
Clawing some back a little bit. Got the 4 hours in and was a little tilted to be upstuck so just let it end there. Misplayed a couple hands against a huge whale and that was all it took to go from a good day to an average day. Need to stay grounded though and not play the victim. Feels like my mental toughness is taking a long time to come back to me. I feel like I'm playing nittier than normal by vpiping less, not 3betting in spots that are normally auto for me, giving up on some bluff hot spots and not going thin enough for value. I feel it coming back to me soon. This is the danger of being married to your monthly results. I think in the future I will employ more of a Onkleb mindset and focus on quarterly results instead of monthly. Just need to figure out how to live off of quarterly money instead of monthly money 😃
No gym for today so the focus will be on increasing hours for Sunday. Maybe fire a few lolaments. Squeeze a home workout in.
