2024 Summer Olympics from Paris
Amazed we don't have a thread yet. I will do up a fancier OP tomorrow but this will do for now as a placeholder.
Women's softball opens the games in roughly 5hrs with soccer/football, archery and some other sports starting before the opening ceremony Friday night Japan time.
PREDICTIONS: Rona causes a stupid amount of issues, I still waste approx 100hrs of coverage anyway.
Really great 100m run by Alfred from St Lucia. Richardson’s slow start put her under so much pressure but she wasn’t really catching her
200m will be fun. Hope Sharicka runs well too
I missed the finals, but Alfred was very good in her heat.
What happens if someone diarrheas in an indoor pool?
Right in the middle of a race.
You're in 1st place last lap but you see a brown blob inches from where you're about to swim..what happens? Stop redo?
Would they have to clean out the entire pool for the next event or would be there acceptable levels of poo particles?
While it was still allowed pre race, US swimming great Janet Evans used to dive into her key opponent’s lane, get out and then tell them that she’d pissed in it to try to put them off mentally

play on
If I had to pick a track & field sport that correlates strongest to hitting a golf ball, it would be shot put.
Rotation, ground force, extension, components of both endeavors.
Shot put World Record has only progressed by 50cm in 35 years. Less than 2.5%.
Discus WR has only progressed 27cm in 38 years - about 0.3%
Hammer throw hasn’t changed in 38 years
Steroid era impact stuff I guess, albeit the men’s sprints have improved since then. Women’s sprint not so much
I wonder how long Marita Koch’s 400m WR might last

If you throw out Bolt, how have times improved compared to Ben Johnson's 9.79?
I got to thinking about shot put comparing it with Bryson DeChambeau's swing, and other long distance driving competitors.
They have quite a bit of the elements of shot put technique IMO. Although rythym is important, there is no substitute for pure power and energy.
One technique that seems to be stressed in shot put but not discus is ground force. I'm no expert, but it seems to me discus focuses on radial acceleration, not ground force.

I love how Geoff Capes stil holds the British Shot Put record.
sick men's archery finals this
down to a one arrow shootout
Alacaraz's speed on clay is unbelievable. Djokovic has to hit twice as many winners as normal to win a point. Often he screws up.
men's kayak cross looks fun
That winning return from Djokovic in the tie-break is up there with his US Open Semi-Final backhand return vs Roger down 2 match points 40-15
