Joseph Heller still dead, still at 76 (and other celebrity deaths): RIP Hank Aaron and Willie Mays
When an interviewer told Mr. Heller that he had never written anything as good as ''Catch-22,'' the author shot back, ''Who has?''
He brought laughter into many people’s home. A welcome talent that we probably need more of. RIP.
Absolutely love Newhart. Rip.
absolute legend...and I never heard or read one little bad thing about him. Just an amazing man and talent. RIP.
RIP Bob Newhart, he was always great.
Now all 3 are gone.
I've tried to copy his one way phone conversations. I thought it would be fun to do at the poker table. I found it impossible. The wording and timing have to be perfect.
Heard a story on the radio this afternoon that for some part, the director asked him to speed up his delivery.
His response was to the effect of, "this delivery has gotten me a house in Beverly Hills. I don't think I'll change it."
So great. The finale of Newhart might be the greatest series-ender of all time.
Duke Fakir, last of the Four Tops, dead on Monday, July 22, 2024, at age 88 in Detroit, Michigan.
Lewis Lapham, writer and editor of Harper's. He was a fine writer, and I got to hear him speak at a conference many years ago. He was an intellectual without intellectual pretense.

Who was that woman in La Doce Vita and The Mummy? Yvonne Furneaux, actress, dead at age 98, on July 5, 2024.
Duane Thomas died, the very good rb for the Cowboys from the early 70s. He had one of the best sports quotes ever: he asked if the Super Bowl was the ultimate game, then why do they play a new one every year, something like that. His career was too brief.
Billy Beane at 62. He didn't change the game completely, but how many GMs can you name?

There's 2 billy beanes?
Seems like what I saw on ESPN yesterday was "Bean" (no e). But I'm not interested enough to verify.
let me help you, Bean's career and personal life are worth reading about
RIP Chi Chi :(
He was maybe the most colorful golfer back in the 60's and it was difficult not to root for him. He was also hilarious. Maybe 25-30 years ago I went to the US Senior Open and we watched him for a while at the practice tee. He was joking with the crowd and doing swing impressions of other famous golfers.
Rodney Dangerfield was also an impressive golfer. He even made a movie about it!
