As I said, I don't love this proposal no matter who supports it. But I don't expect lawyers and bankers to start characterizing part of their income as tips. That isn't the problem.

MAGA has already put their proposal forward via ted cruz and rick scott. from my limited tax understanding, there is no qualification that you couldn't reclassify them so why wouldn't they?

For starters, this hasn't passed. But more fundamentally, in order to characterize something as a tip, I think you would have to concede that everyone understood at the time of billing that the amount that you are declaring as a tip did not have be paid.

My comment had nothing to do with norms. I am talking about pure self-interest and the dictionary definition of a tip, the latter of which would inform the interpretation of the statute in the absence of an explicit definition in the statute.
