Moderation Questions
The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.
This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.
Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.
Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.
So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.
Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.
So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.
We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.
Thanks.
Democrats are a large police state, large foreign war party. If you think that is leftist then you’re wrong.
Democracts have 95% of the same policies republicans do. They are both right wing political parties.
Lmao at people that think Dems are leftist.
Dems don’t support the people, they support the companies.
No idea how Bill Maher stays on television. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with his takes, his approach is always so smug and cringe-inducing that it is easy to instantly just take the opposite side out of principle. He has also replaced trying to be funny with trying to sound smart, and he doesn't even do that well.
Sounds like a few posters around here. Insta-cringe
StoppedRainingMen has been banned for 7 days for his history of personal attacks and recent infractions for the same.
Friends, I understand we all have strong feelings about many subjects here, but we *cannot* just speak to one another any which way we want. There are rules for the discourse of the forum, and we all have to abide by them equally.
I apologize for not being here to see the post reports earlier. I haven’t been reading many of the threads outside I/P due to some serious recent events
There are not rules of the forum that we all must abide by equally.
That is not grounded in reality.
I would argue against this, but I don’t want to get banned again.
And the fact that I can’t argue something without risk of being banned, yet you can…. Well that’s all the evidence I need.
When your “argument” is purely making personal attacks against mods and maligning my integrity over and over and over with no other content, then of course I’m going to ban you. I should not have been so tolerant of that abuse in the first place.
When you can’t attack positions, you attack the person. I get it. But I’m not going to stand for the ad hominems that go on for days anymore.
If you want to argue about policy, be my guest.
Wait, a liberal was banned!? I thought that wasn't possible.

I quoted your own posts and you banned me.
I guess I’m missing the part where that’s fair. And I’m also missing the part that makes it an attack. What does that say about policy?

This is exactly how I feel about him.
i don't think he was correct to call you out specifically
but guys like luciom and other right wing posters are pretty much insulted egregiously in nearly half of the posts responding to them
just today we had a lengthy discussion back and forth discussion by many people regarding whether luciom was mentally ill or just room temperature iq
and truth be told, not a single person posting that stuff actually believes any of it, they just hate his ideology and thus have no empathy for someone they cons
There is no requirement for empathy in the forum rules. There is a requirement not to personally insult. I don't think i ever personally insulted you except of calling you a marxist and the like (which for you guys is a compliment so it's allowed i guess).
If i did you should have reported the post, and that still doesn't allow you to insult me back, even if you think you have been insulted.
I’ve probably reported less than 5 posts in nearly 20 years and it was always trolling.
I’d pretty much prefer everyone post however they want.
Where this becomes questionable is the I&P thread where it’s completely dominated by someone who apparently can’t read. That person sucking the air out of an entire thread, and occasionally taking it into other threads, is a problem. Once you’ve said objectively wrong things over and over for months it’s time to take a break.
Anyways, I’d rather just match your energy. If you put it out in the world that you think lesser of lgbtq, black people, most class of immigrant, and whatever else, it should be fine to point out all the reasons we think lesser of you. Seems fair, right?

Dead on point many of the posters here are extreme left .
I’m starting to think you guys just don’t know what words mean.
Mussolini, the inventor of fascism, was a lefty and moderate democrats are “extreme”

There’s been a long-running miscommunication on this forum regarding what left, right, liberal and conservative mean. Some people use these words in the colloquial American political sense and some use them in a more academic or historical sense.
This forum, and politics in general, becomes destructive because so many mistakenly believe that rational argumentation should be sufficient to persuade. Persuasion is the way toward the good, I’m not making a justification for more force / censorship, but rational argumentation (even backed with supporting evidence) is ultimately insufficient.
Wisdom is required, but wisdom requires from us defection and a journey.
So as soon as I became aware of the issue in the Trump thread, I immediately dealt with that thread as well as banning the most egregious offender.
Somehow everyone is still mad.
Make it make sense
Like I said, I have some pretty intense things happening in my personal life right now so I won’t be prioritizing this argument here today. Please try not to fight each other…
I do my best, guys, to be fair and respectful. Sorry if I’m coming up short.

There is no miscommunication. It's just the usual game where people define the terms in whatever way best suits the argument they are trying to make.
dear mods, for the record, anyone who implies someone who is trans could be suffering from mental health issues will receive a week long ban
meanwhile, it's open season calling all conservatives deranged, insane, schizophrenic, bipolar, cuckoo, etc and that's much worse because it's purely intended as an insult whereas in the trans thread (while there are some meant as insults that should be moderated, for the most part it's just objective and neutral toned discussion)
it's not a consistent policy at all - someone posits that they believe that it's possible that for some people who believe they are born the wrong gender could be stemming from psychological issues - something said without any ill will or cruel intents whatsoever mind you, and they banned for being a "hateful transphobic bigot" when nothing of the sort took place
yet so long as someone posts about anything conservative then it's open season to attack their mental state
just absurd all the blatant hypocrisy - afterall, that's the worst thing cosby did

For like the 10th time, its anyone who implies that being trans is itself a mental health issue. In your example, the person is implying that trans people are born with some mental deficiency and that is why they are trans. Its like saying trans people have downs syndrome
As for the rest, well,
. Violent people only respond to violence. It is consistent. One is a vulnerable group who suffer from often extreme prejudice and bullying.
Not a fan of attacking conservatives or posters as mentally ill in anyway but it aint the same thing at all.

and yet we're not allowed to say that something which makes you want to commit suicide could possibly be a mental health issue
but then anyone who says anything remotely favorable of right wing policies, then by all means, call that person any kind of nutjob and schizophrenic wacko at all
At what age should the govt be able to control your body?

I've posted data that supports that HRT and surgery reduce attempt and success rates of suicide in trans individuals. I've certainly not screamed ad nauseam about it as its a burgeoning science. I think trans individuals should be able to seek and receive medical care, even if they are a child.
Again, you can't seem to internalize that being trans likely isn't the cause of suicidal tendencies. Its dismissive to imply because they are a marginalized group that receives prejudice and hatred and are targeted by propaganda campaigns. Would it not be more constructive to explore tolerance before dismissing them as mentally ill?
I really don't feel bad for having the general stance of "empathy first" towards trans people. Your lots incessant attempts to shame me for having empathy for trans people is .... weird.
edit: This tidbit of common sense must be SHOCKING

and what is their suicide rate after getting surgery?
Should kids have the right to choose their own medical procedures?
If not, do parents have the right to chose their kids’ medical procedures?
