Yeah I think the problem is that if we permaban conservatives for being uncivil there would be no conservatives left lmao

Especially if you define "uncivil" as "being rightwing" on any issue yes, which is what the left and the rules of this forum do.

Meanwhile unlimited insults to any rightwing politician (fair) and all their voters are always allowed and celebrated

3 of the 7 people listed were banned specifically for insulting *you*, so please, give the above shtick a rest. Thanks.

Especially if you define "uncivil".......

Well good, we collectively got that off our chests.

Move on.

I will reiterate what CN said about the timing of everything "since the elections are near". This place will go sour very quickly around here.

The mods have been given a green light to ban ANY newcomer.... like we did the last election cycle. New guys are usually just alias' so "no harm, no foul?" Well in my mind it is a very egregious faux pas BECAUSE it places a huge burden on the mod staff.

Nerves will get frayed, fuses get short. Live with it or not. Your choice. The mod teams can look at most bans and say "well, XXX just banned himself". browser "be nice" should be the thought of the day.

Posters shouldn't be allowed to violate site-wide rules on hate speech, personal attacks, and ban evasion simply because their brand of conservative politics has become indistinguishable from knuckle-dragging bigotry.

I often think that I spend too much time posting on 2+2.

Then I click on "Find posts by Luciom", I note that he has made 170 posts in the last 48 hours (all in the Politics forum), and I realize that others have a much bigger problem than I do.

surprised it's not higher than 3/7 tbh

Same thing for mods breaking the rules

Forums are a dying model. Reddit replaced forums.

Reddit has been washed out and watered down for a while now, with Discord replacing reddit as the leading edge of discussion forum.

Discord discussions have been moving to Telegram for the last year or two. Who knows if this recent case will deter that or if Telegram will emerge as the new leading edge in internet discussion.

Point being, Forums are like 5 generations removed from being relevant as a player in the leading edge discussions. There is never going to be a resurgence in new users driving content on a 25 year old niche discussion forum.

yeah whenever i peruse old threads it always makes me really sad to see just how many old threads are full of banned accountspeople do one thing once and boom, an account that posted for years with 5k posts gets bannedi think those bans are major reason why this place is so deadi'm sure if we looked at the numbers we'd see it's less than 200 people accounting for 90% of the tra

Bolded never really happens. Not many long time posters have been perma'd, and of those who have been, I would guess that an overwhelming majority were warned more than ten times in one way or the other to quit doing whatever it was that got them banned.

lagtight is a perfect example. In many respects, I enjoyed having him around, and I wasn't the one who perma'd him, but there is no disputing that he was warned over and over and over again to avoid his particular "style" of posting about homosexuality. For reasons known only to him, he chose to go out on his sword rather than refrain.

How do we know which discussion is the leading edge?

You quoted me because you think my post about Luciom was banworthy?

Wherever the kids are is the leading edge

Leading edge is so yesterday. Bleeding edge is where it's at now.

by Rococo

I think it was more to underscore the volume of Luciom's posting.

Wherever the kids are is the leading edge

Kids are dumb.

by coordi

Wherever the kids are is the leading edge

Do you mean that Reddit isn't even where the kids are posting these days? That there are worse places than Reddit for discussion about anything is actually pretty surprising.

by coordi

Wherever the kids are is the leading edge

Kids go where they are told to go - which is snapchat and IG. You can get a hell of a deal buying snap shares if you think they are the leading edge.

Reddit are Gen xers and old millenials.

Wherever the kids are is the leading edge

why?

I probably shouldn't have said "kids". It should also probably be implied that leading edge isn't "most used by the general public". Once something gets mopped up its already jumping the shark

The overlap on demographics between reddit and discord is fairly astounding

Discord skews a little bit younger.

why?

Risk taking and novel thoughts

Risk taking and novel thoughts

I guess it depends. Young people obviously are taste makers and have disproportionate influence in setting new trends in consumer behavior, use of technology, etc.

I don't know that they represent the cutting edge of political discussion, and I am even less certain that they are way disproportionately on the radical edge of political discussion.

all online numbers are wrong - children are severely underreported because most kids when signing up give fake birthdays to avoid content blocking

Fair point. I guess I was speaking in general terms. I definitely wouldn't expect high level political discussions to be happening in Discord. Just more speaking on the place of Forums in the sphere of modern cultural influence

On this page alone, outside of PW (who likely has an older account somewhere), every account is 10+ years old

While likely true, you would expect reporting to be similarly wrong across platforms

YEs it's full of 11y old who fake their age to write in the comment section of the NYT

There are certainly a number of posters here who, while they may biologically be adults... well, let's just say I'd be careful not to leave sharp objects or choking hazards lying around if they were about.

like youtube in particular skews very young

a lot of people like mr beast have "official demographics" that declare their average view age is 27 but in reality it's closer to 7 that 27

basically the only kids who are accurately age represented are those who have accounts setup by their parents (and they all have burners to get around when needed with a quick login switcheroo - it's pretty astounding how capable a 10 year old who is unable to properly use a fishing rod is when handed an ipad )
