NCAA FOOTBALL 2024 MEGA THREAD - WELCOME TO THE PLAYOFF ERA

NCAA FOOTBALL 2024 MEGA THREAD - WELCOME TO THE PLAYOFF ERA

Just 8 days until Florida State plays Georgia Tech!

A lot happened while you were away:

Texas and Oklahoma joined the SEC

The Pac-12 went out in a blaze of glory:
Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA are headed to the B1G
Utah, Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado are headed to the B12
Cal and Stanford along with SMU are somehow headed to the ACC
Poor old Wazzu and Oregon State are now aligned with the MWC in some sort of in-flux relationship

The conferences are huge now, and the schedules are wildly imbalanced. Florida might have the hardest schedule in the history of the sport, while Missouri's playing a sun-belt slate.

FSU and Clemson play each other, but then play ZERO common ACC opponents

Utah/Baylor and Arizona/Kansas State play non-conference games against conference opponents

LSU and USC play in Vegas!

Boise goes to Oregon, a team they've never lost to!

Texas at Michigan!

Alabama at Wisconsin!

Notre Dame at ATM!

Clemson vs Georgia!

And there are some incredibly juicy new conference matchups:

Texas @ ATM is back!

Texas vs Georgia

Oregon vs Ohio State

USC @ Michigan

USC vs Penn State

And then the bizarre:

UCLA @ Rutgers is now a conference game

Syracuse plays home and away against Cal and Stanford for some reason

Half the teams have new coaches, transferred quarterbacks, or both!

Let's get it on!

I thought “Farmageddon” (tm) was Iowa St vs Kansas St.

I remember hearing about it from a trivia question that it’s the oldest continuously played rivalry game in college football, played every year for over 100 years that has never been interrupted.

You're right. Iowa / Iowa State is cyhawk, but also like there's so many farms they might as well just all be farmageddon

Pretty impressed at the respect for the B12 in the poll

11 Utah
16 Ok St
17 K State
19 Kansas
20 Arizona

B12 starts the season with 5 ranked teams. Odds they finish with MORE have gotta be close to zero

South Florida 9/7/2024 0:00 7:00:00 PM 31
Alabama 9/7/2024 0:00 7:00:00 PM -30.5

Surprisingly we haven't heard much about Alabama so far this offseason & season to date. But they looked like they haven't missed a beat transitioning from GOAT HC to Kalen Deboer by absolutely throttling Western Kentucky last weekend. South Florida really gave 'Bama fits early last season and they are bringing back pretty much that same exact team. Another 'Bama blowout and I expect we'll be hearing about them a lot again.

Boise State 9/7/2024 0:00 10:00:00 PM 19.5
Oregon 9/7/2024 0:00 10:00:00 PM -18.5

Boise State beat the other GSU in a defense optional shootout, while Oregon struggled on the scoreboard (although again, not really in the box) against Idaho. If Boise wins, they'd lock up the MM spot conditional on winning the MWC. Hell, they'd even give themself some non MM spots (i.e. if they go 12-0 and lose in the conference title game, they might sneak in as a top-12 team and the MWC could get TWO bids. Especia

this guy is going to be a problem for the ducks and anyone else the broncos play this season

and load up on Tetairoa McMillan futures
6-5 with game speed faster than his recorded 4.5

true but the game was played in monsoon-like conditions

shouldn't a 'crimson tide' be built to weather that type of environment?

at the moment i would not suscribe to aTm being 'back'

At least our fanbase is not overconfident this week...

lol if anybody wants it you can fire Miami to playoff at +110 and Miami u10.5 at -125

So you'd basically be getting 31-1 on Miami going exactly 10-2 and making the playoff

I actually looked up the definition of overconfident. This is what I got: "excessively or unreasonably confident".

I honestly don't think it's possible for a Texas fan to be "excessively or unreasonably confident". The only pathway Michigan has to a possible victory is winning the turnover battle by 3+.

Our offensive line is not good. I mean maybe they'll figure it out by Ohio State and give them a decent fight but they ain't fixing that in 6 days. Our QB decides who he's gonna throw to presnap and if that guy's covered and everyone else is open he'll still throw to that guy. We also have no talent at WR but I really shouldn't complain about that given how on brand that is for Michigan. Cornelius Johnson, arguably our best WR over the last 3 years, didn't even make the practice squad of the Chargers.

Our special teams and defense are elite so there's that but having no offense is kinda a bad thing when playing a national title contender. Texas 31 Michigan 10.

I seriously don't even wanna watch this game. That's how much I'm dreading it. Gotta keep reminding myself we just won the national title so who cares if we suck now. The most depressing part is we're actually projected to be even worse next year. We have 5 possible first rounders on this team who will all be gone (Loveland, Grant, Graham, Johnson & Barham). Next year is the year we really pay the price for mediocre recruiting over the last 3 years. 6-6 is very possible. I'm still hoping we can get to 8-4 this year.

Slightly OT, but tell me this isn’t the most Harbaugh move ever:

Cornelius Johnson, arguably our best WR over the last 3 years...

what about Roman Wilson?

by ligastar k

what about Roman Wilson?

Well I did say arguably, and yea thats the argument. People could also bring up Ronnie Bell who did make the 49ers roster but he's disqualified cuz he only played 1 out of the last 3 years (2022) as he was injured for almost all of 21 and was in the NFL in 23.

Wilson is more talented than Johnson but Johnson I think had more big/clutch catches over the last 3 years. Although Wilson's high point catch vs Alabama is literally the biggest/most important catch in Michigan history.

That said I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Roman Wilson, Ronnie Bell, and Johnson never make an impact in the NFL. We haven't produced big time WRs since Lloyd Carr and the one exception, Nico Collins, we completely wasted him with mediocre QB play.

God I love Harbaugh so much.

FSU -2.5 at home vs Memphis and +12.5 @ Miami confirm Vegas has dropped them something like 9-10 points from their preseason rating

wow

They bought the wrong Pac-12 quarterback

by Jeremy517 k

They bought the wrong Pac-12 quarterback

I hope they at least drove a hard bargain.

there are several seasons worth of DJU analysis available to suggest how to best shape an offense around him.
hell, just look what Jonathan Smith did with him at OSU last year.
quick summary: a 16-42 run-pass playcall ratio ain't it

no excuse not to know what you were buying

couple low-stakes measuring-stick games tonight

SMU had pretty high preseason ratings, underperformed vs Nevada, then took care of business against HCU
BYU obliterated a pretty decent FCS team in Southern Illinois which is a good sign for them

Northwestern / Duke are both towards the bottom of their conferences, but every measuring-stick game is useful

Best games tomorrow by timeslot:

Noon:
Texas @ Michigan
Arkansas @ Ok State
Kansas State @ Tulane
Pitt @ Cincy

330:
Iowa State @ Iowa
Cal @ Auburn
Baylor @ Utah
USCe @ Kentucky
Sparty @ Maryland

7/730:
Tennessee n NC State
Colorado @ Nebraska
App State @ Clemson
Kansas @ Illinois

10:
Boise @ Oregon
Tech @ Wazzu
Cowbell @ ASU

The "ACC on ESPN" graphic for a BYU at SMU game just looks wrong. I still haven't gotten used to all of these teams in different conferences this year.

the one that doesn't feel weird is Colorado (back) in the Big12.
