I think there was a plane involved, so that makes it either 1911 or 1921. 11 seems a little early in aviation, but maybe not. The question becomes "did it happen before or after WWI?" I'll come up with something after work.
I think the North Pole was reached after WWI, so I'm guessing the same time frame for the South Pole.
