1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.
I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.
I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?
I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.
Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks,
DT
Up $4,300 today when the game broke. 😀 gonna wrap up soon just want to reset my sleep schedule a little more. AA v. AA all in pre was the biggest one against super aggro action player on tilt.
Obviously I am ecstatic. Helped to see family and doggos the other day and recenter and remember what’s important in life.
Got a solid ten hours of sleep again, enjoying Nespresso lattes now, a little in-home jogging in place to get the blood flowing, will probably do just a light exercise routine today for a change of pace before hitting the felt, nothing too vigorous, don't feel that kind of energy.
All things considered, given how poorly I have been running I have held it together rather well and didn't completely lose my sht. I had my moments, but hardly a total meltdown I see happen to some others (recalling the Argentinian pro on monkey tilt jamming 72o and 62o for stacks at 5/T/25 were fun ones). So I'll call this period a learning experience and in a sense a win...it could have been so much worse if I let it get there. I have definitely come out stronger on the other side of this downswing, I can tell in my demeanor at the tables and how I interact with other players.
Up over $3,000 today between 1/2 and 5/5, felt confident enough to play the bigger game for a change. Looking up, maybe another heater coming? Game was good when I quit but I was tired. Biggest was AKJT9ds 986 my nfd got it in 3! pot and got there. coaching session went well too.
Over a $10,000 upswing recently has helped me find my motivation and soothed my nerves. I'm no longer quite as worried about cash flow and bankroll management as I was just a week ago. I also glimpsed my monthly results for 1/2 plo and miraculously discovered that I was winning several thousand despite the atrocious runbad and some playbad this month.
Gonna listen to music while sipping my lattes on the couch, exercise, and see if anyone is still playing overnight.
Had a slow session, got an AA cracked once by KK, otherwise somewhat uneventful, got in a big pot with a maniac with AJ975ds and got it in with top two at a tiny spr against top two with a fd and they got there. Lost AA top set ott in a 3! pot too to a straight. At the end won a 4! pot with KT987ds on T65r. Ended down $350 or so before leaving to meet my ex for dinner and curb your enthusiasm reruns, then crashing from the food coma.
Plenty of sleep, now lattes and music before seeing how late the Saturday overnight games ran.
One week of results should have minimal to almost no impact on your BRM. If it does, you’re not following proper bankroll management.
My two cents.

Relax..I am very very overrolled for my games if you factor in my total net worth and investments. I just don’t want to touch those and my cash is a little tighter than usual.

How big of a bankroll do you need to play all those high stakes plo5 games? You a 25/25/100 reg right

Most of the HS PLO5 games that run are 25/25/50 or 10/10/50 with occasional 100. The second game has a $1k minimum which I often buy in for. (Although I do not play as often as I used to before my downswing...gotta regain confidence.) I would suggest someone buying in deeper like over $5k have several hundred thousand dollars or more.
Played a late session to recoup the losses from 5/5 where I ran bad with dsAA and lost AQT95ds on QJ4 to AAJT4 in 3! pot at a low spr. Ended up making around $1,200 on the night which I was happy with.
Lattes and music now, got a new student too. Have not checked the monthly profit but by my estimation I am losing only a little this month if not close to break even, similar to previous losing months.
Won around $500 to round out the month, a little at mix, hold 'em, and plo. At plo re-raised 98754ds and got it in on 954r and lost to pair nfd. Otherwise ran well though. At mix my pat 5 dugi 7 low held at badacey (A7542) and I scooped with aces full in stud 8, a welcome change. Ran bad at 2-7 triple draw, missing my good draws or bluffing with a pair and getting called.
Plenty of sleep, a coaching session then a new month begins! Excited to see how big the come back will be.
Broke even the first day of the month, lost AJT98ds in 4! pot, made top two nut nutter but river brought in a bd flush and V donked large and I folded, lost AQJ75ds multiway all in, scooped AA772 multiway though, lost overpair nfd gutter to set near the end and was getting tired so I called it a night. Got raised off top set at a high spr for a very large (relative to the main pot) dry side pot and would have scooped, that was unfortunate.
Waking up slowly now, sun is shining at least. Gonna exercise then play. Maybe some mix since it's Wednesday.
Won $1,000 or so last night, got good sleep and some exercise and a coaching session, and another interested student or two…coaching is really picking up it seems which I don’t mind at all. Having another steady source of income is always nice. I wonder if I am still charging too little at $100 an hour though.

Much more and you might find the potential student pool drying up. Better to think of it as a nice side hustle at this point.
Lost a few grand, ran bad in some big pots at 1/2 plo, was card dead at 10/10/50 (played in a good line up for a couple hours). Got T-high in three ways against two high card hands and as I figured I was a favorite as they were blocking each other. AQJ87ds lost all in to some pretty trashy hands too, and AA got outflopped by a blind hand at spr sub 1. A bluff didn't get through either and I lost AA nfd in a 3! pot to a set. Good solid sleep and I don't have to coach today so I will be very fresh for my session. Lattes music and exercise then hit the felt. It's the weekend!
I read the existing written literature on plo5 the past week...here are my thoughts:
The Five card formula (corey mikesell): $197, around 40 pages long. Some good ideas on spr and how that changes our plans for the hand over multiple streets, and the advice on equities needed IP versus OOP at different sprs as well was useful. A little short and not as comprehensive or concrete advice as you might like for such an expensive book though, it is more high level and conceptual and full of graphs that take up a lot of space.
Uncovering Five-card pot limit omaha (David chen): $18, around 60 pages long. Written by a non-professional player, quite repetitive in many sections. Got 2-star review on amazon and I an inclined to agree with those reviews. A lot of advice is superficial and not in-depth enough, and some preflop advice is hard to understand due to the the terminology used. Some good advice on staying balanced with bluffs versus value with just a few examples, and playing different player types, but these concepts are not unique to PLO5.
Neither book has much on actual equities in various postflop senarios and stack off thresholds for various hands at different SPRs (unlike my ebook which is full of these examples), they just say "lookup the equities on your own." That's a lot of work and something a good book on PLO5 should include IMHO. Also neither went into particularly comprehensive detail on all the bluffing candidates in PLO5 as my book does (link to reviews below):
https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/33/bo... ("Winning Five-card omaha stretegy," John Alba, 21 single-spaced pages - no graphs!).
Just realized that when I’m playing mixed games I feel a sense of excitement about drawing to a good hand. When I’m playing plo I feel dread that I’ll be outdrawn or miss. Very different emotions in the two games.
They sure are!
Was winning at mix and plo but then fish got lucky on me in a 4! pot against my AA with crappy QQ at 5/5 plo and ran it once with me when he ran it twice earlier with a much weaker hand in a similarly big pot. Very steamed, lost middle to top pair at 5/T in 3! pot at spr 1 and currently down a few hundo.
Wrapped up at 2/5 winning a little with a set and talking up some hold 'em players about PLO and my book/coaching a bit, got food and sleep, a little less than usual but enough to get through the day (around 9 hours). Feeling a little low on energy, gonna continue to caffeinate and light exercise and head to the casino (where the plumbing didn't work last night..bleh...sometimes for such an expensive place it can be quite the dump).
Talked about the QTs btn. v. SB short-handed spot with a friend, could find a tight fold pre against the 3! and not see a flop so short. Perhaps a moment of weakness coming off a bad beat at plo and a fish who ran it once against me after running it twice earlier with someone else with a much weaker hand.
Very annoyed lately seeing people who have been really unkind to me winning a lot from others, picking the high card when the table breaks, etc. Seems like there's no justice in poker right now. I guess if there's any consolation it's that I beat them all.
Very nice hand against colluder last night at 5/5...open and call, I 3! $300 from straddle, three ways KTTcc. x/x/x. Turn 3c. x/x/colluder jams small we both call, they have flush and I have AAKK7 with naked Ac. colluder snap quits pissed off for doubling me up.
Fun player just called colluder wife a “voodoo bitch.” Made my night..we could Not stop laughing.

For all the complaints you’ve made about players harassing you, making inappropriate comments about your sexual orientation I’m surprised you’d revel in a woman being harassed and called a sexist term at the table. I thought you were better than that Dumbo.
