2024 ELECTION THREAD
The next presidential race will be here soon! Please see current Bovada odds. Thoughts?
A plant based diet is more healthy than meat and there are vegan communities that are some of the longest lived people. I just eat meat because it tastes good though. But it's not healthier for you.
Bold is false but even if it was true, maximizing life expenctancy at the expense of pleasure isn't human either. A desire to minimize risk at all costs isn't human and especially it is emasculating ad extremely feminine. If you don't like and embrace calculated risk you aren't manly.
Putting a mask on (even if you are absolutely certain it works, which you shouldn't because it was fairly obvious it didn't at all) because covid exists is exceptionally emasculating for example
Kamala Harris underperformed in every demographic although i think she still polls will with illegal immigrants in prison who want to change sex /
... And now London Breed pronouns are She/gone
Actually I think she over-performed with (American) Jews. Not based on history, but based on expectations Jews might defect due to the administrations tepid response to domestic antisemitism since 10/7. Ironically, the reasons she over-performed with Jews is they are not single issue voters. And most American Jews are generally liberal and oppose xenophobia; so they recognize they overall aligned much more with Harris's platform than Trumps.

Ye that's possible, i was just quoting the very funny Maher sketch (he also makes very nice jokes about trump ofc, but those in a sense are "easier" to make )

Yeah man, putting on a face mask is basically the same as cutting your dick off. 🙄
His argument is more Jungian than ev psych based.
P1. Our ancestors ate meat.
P2. When we eat meat we experience a primal connection with our past (....through the collective unconscious).
C. We should eat meat.
Circling back to ev psych; we obviously cant know for sure, but it is certainly possible at the species level we physically and psychologically evolved in response to the adaptive pressure of hunting big game. And it contributed to physical sexual dimorphism and hardwired gender norm preferences.

And language to coordinate hunts, and walking long distances to fatigue the prey (we can actually walk more miles over days/weeks than most species on earth).
And then we discovered how to keep fire (we learnt to keep it possibly tens of thousands of years before we learnt how to ignite it). Imagine having to preserve this flicking fire 24/7 and what it comports to behavioural attitudes, tribal roles and so on
Do you think it's as simple as the story being told or are there possibly some more oblique reasons?
I'm not sure what the story being told is so without that I wouldn't be able to answer you.
What I'm saying is
1. This shift by latinos to Trump was definitely seen in the polling.
2. That didn't make its way into any discourse about the election that I saw.
3. I'm wondering why that's the case and if I can sue someone for misleading me on Kamala in Wisconsin.
A tighter border or even the perception of one could be good for biz in certain circles just sayin 😀
It's pretty easy to find the straight story all over the front page of google fwiw.
This should be the top post-election story and it's being ignored. I posted about it and my post was ignored too.
Not to pat my own back, but I have been arguing for 15+ years across various forums that Democrats were playing with fire and Latinos would eventually turn Republican, as their conservative values align better. In response to why working class Latino border populations specifically supported Trump in 2024, I think it is some combination of:
1. Conservative values (eg. dont support transgender girls in high school locker rooms or use of the term 'Latinx")
2. Relate more to Trumps "machismo" than Harris's persona
3. Recognized that Democrats were neglecting the border, creating a dysfunctional situation that isn't in anyone's best interests; regardless of your politics on immigration or racism.
oh
Nope missing the biology part.
P1 our ancestors ate meat for so long, a lot of our biology is over-tuned and precisely fitting hunting and eating meat.
P2 When we hunt or at least buy meat and cook it and then eat it, we reactivate enough neural pathways which are wired inside us exactly for those purposes and our body resonates in the same way a horse is in it's place when he can run randomly on a field of grass
C we should eat meat because if we don't, those portions of our body will signal us di
why is using fire part of it but not hunting big game? it would seem that at the minimum if your argument goes through we would have to simulate the big game aspect of it.
but I think you are reversing causation here and performing the lamarckian mistake. the evolution (natural selection) leads to the genetic traits which are selected for by the environment. if we can understand the biological pathways we can bypass the niche and discover something different as a niche.
eg feet developed to better move through mud, but then can be used to go on land once developed. and if there are coevolutionary causes then it’s not clear that both are needed to maximize health. exercise for instance can be a proxy for “the hunt”.
edit: it’s also not clear from a logical perspective if you are actually talking about how we ought to act or if you’re just making a series of descriptive statements. I don’t see how you get from “this is the best diet evolutionarily” to “this is the best diet all things considered” where there is a lot to consider in that category of “all things considered”
I mean did he bet him? Kind of a flex that he was still wrong but was willing to put money down. Nate is one of us, a true pit your money where your mouth is guy.
appreciate nate too and fine with seeking that bet straight up, but acting like someone's insane for adding historical trump bias to '24 polling numbers is odd

No doubt that human physiology is designed for hunting - you only have to look at a man v woman throwing a ball to understand this.
I think it's also true to say we enjoy eating tasty food. "tasty" food is generally food we can extract a large number of calories from, which is the reason we cook meat. This also extends to non-human animals preference for cooked meat, so it's evolutionary ancient. It's not understating the argument that control of fire may be the most important milestone in human evolution. Richard Wrangham makes a good case for this in his book on the topic. Not only in terms of calories, but also human sociability would also have been selected for by sharing and enjoying food together.
However (C) is almost certainly wrong. what you're suggesting is addiction, but people do not develop addictions to cooked meat. Maybe high calorie food in general - eating disorders are characterise by activating the same neurochemical mechanisms as other addictions, but not meat specifically.

The neighbor poll is really interesting to me. I would think, which neighbors? Then I would guess based on demographics.
Obviously, it's effective though.

Part of the human physiology designed for hunting is problem solving skills. That’s why intellectual competition can be a proxy for human desire to hunt which leads to the desire for mathematics, science, engineering, etc which are all higher utility outputs than hunting.
And also come to think of it that’s a good illustration of coevolution because the same genetic factors that lead to being a better hunter can also lead to being a better “gatherer”.
The life story goes beyond the Darwinian story, and life (in full) only moves forward in the story.
I suggest moving forward in the story as well.
A lot of what makes us human, men especially, is predicated on posting 50+ times per day about culture wars on internet message boards.
Having a blanket policy of pre-emptively blocking anyone with "patriot" in their name or an American flag or a bald eagle in their avatar for having nothing worthwhile to say is probably a pretty safe heuristic, and the probabilities add.
Plus, "Cody" sounds like the name of some meathead who likes to pose for photos on the beach with oiled nipples and a surf board.
cody's a solid poster when he's not headbanging to whitesnake in this getup
