Moderation Questions

Moderation Questions

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

No.

I didn't know you were a mod, congrats on the promotion

Anyway, why do you want fewer Trump threads? More threads gives you more opportunity to spread the seeds of your wisdom in preparation for the great awakening.

Hello, my is Sammy and I'm from Denmark. I just wanted to say that i like this CrossNerd mod-person's style.

Beers

High praise from a Dane

I want to say that I hear a lot of you in the request for lighter moderation. The reason I’m suspicious this is actually the case is due to the copious PMs I get from posters asking me to punish other posters for insulting them.

Copious. Amounts. Of PMs.

*looks directly into the camera*

Maybe we should have a poll?

ppl who dont like big modding are mad

then they get modded over something, so they are double mad

and then then see a poster they dont like fail to get modded over something, so they enter the triple mad zone

i expect it is these triple mads who are firing off PMs

Infract the posters sending the PMs and advise them to grow a thicker skin. Ez game.

I strongly suspect there is an 80/20 rule in play here and the majority of these PMs are coming from the same couple of whiners crying that big bad d2 called them morons or something. In which case you could also advise them to smarten up and stop being morons.

I always got a kick out of Dawkins reading hate mail.

Lol. These god-fearing super religious types sure do like to conjure up a bit of violent sexual imagery, don't they?

Also, chez, stop sending Crossnerd PMs. She's busy.

Some want to see a level playing field, accept that the mod rules aren't going to change and so report posts to ensure equal treatment.

Using reported posts as a measure of approval of rules like this is bad.

Post report != PM. Different things. I think.

I did wonder about that but then didn't think people would be sending lots of PMs to complain when the report button exists.

I'm not going to stop.

Very good.

Also, every time he mentions some batshit insane thing the far left thinks or does I think of Victor and think "yep, sounds about right, that's them."

Sam Harris supported murdering 100s of thousands of civilians in Iraq. I hope that he and his supporters think that I am batshit insane bc their ideals are diametrically opposed to mine.

Basically, his thesis is that the swing voters who moved to Trump in 2024 are those who have had enough of the influence the far left has had on the Democratic party, specifically in the areas of identity politics (trans activism in particular), defense of militant Islamism, thought policing, and all round accusations of bigotry (transphobia, racism, Islamophobia) against everyone who doesn't conform to their batshit insane (my words, not his - he left it as heavily implied) ideas and ideologies. Taking this forum as a microcosm of society and you personally as a representative of the "far left" he's talking about, I'd tend to agree.

the data about swing voters (independents) in swing states that me and 57 published previously in this forum told us that while the trans issue was *number one for them* (with inflation close behind), Israel was like among the less relevant topics for them to decide who to vote.

The idea that undecided care about foreign politics is truly weird to start with tbh. The undecided tend to be low info voters who look around their own life and blame (correctly or incorrectly) politicians for what they dislike about it. They barely know what's happen politically where they live and they tend not to care about stuff happening outside the USA

"Vote for us you stupid racist bigots" always seemed a very bad idea to me. I may have mentioned this a few times over the last few decades.

Still not close to the main reason democrates lost imo.

Sam Harris was quite specific about which voters he was talking about, and it was multiple categories - some who were undecided, some who moved from Biden to Trump between 2024, a couple of other categories I can't remember now. It's pretty much within the first 2-3 minutes of the video if you're curious. Not all the categories would have been clueless about foreign policy, and his thesis focused more on domestic protests in favour of Palestine than foreign policy as it concerns Israel anyway.

His thesis was that there were multiple factors, some within their control and some not, and he was focusing on the factors he felt were within their control.

Me too

Me too

I didn't think so either, but I'm swayed by his argument. I recommend you listen to the video.

People talking incessantly about it has created the impression that a large number of trans people are going to force the public to use different words all the time, when in fact it’s a tiny number.

It’s similar fear mongering to how people have become radicalised against immigrants.

And of course Israel wasn’t high on the list when both parties are committed to the genocide.

Look, it's pointless using me as a proxy to argue against his points, I'm not going to sit here transcribing a 40 minute monologue. Suffice to say that this is a strawman and that wasn't his point. If you want to argue against his points, listen to the video so you know what they are.

People don't have a check list with each item given a weighting for who they decide to vote for. It's more of general feeling. In this case (and probably most cases), on both sides, it came down to, "what's wrong with those people?" and then vote the other way.

Those that agree they want less modding are pretty much the top ten of most people’s “should be banned and shouldn’t have been unbanned” list.
