Moderation Questions

Moderation Questions

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

Much better just to take them to a fast food place and get them something to eat. That way they don't feel obliged to give you a blow job (though that may be a drawback for you).

Start talking (as you would with any other person though, no condescending) and then see what they actually need and if you can make a difference.

That is if you want to try to help people who might be in need.

Often I can't , sometimes I feel like they deserve their status. Sometimes you discover they have options and they actually don't hate that life (at least until winter) and you have a beer together and learn something.

Sometimes you can help them get a sim card because they don't speak italian, or you help them actually fill forms, or can refer them to associations that can help them (because of purported violations of their rights by house lords, or employers, or police).

People are generally very kind towards the homeless here and see to it that they have food, but what they universally want is a ****ing roof over their heads.

Would you prefer calling them "criminals"

I think it's the "alien" part that throws people off-- but those aren't real.

In the UK it is worse than here, but here in Italy roofs are super cheap in a lot of the country, just not where I live .

There is no human right to live in San Francisco specifically and I suppose you agree with that though.

Being homeless in London is an oxymoron, the **** are you doing in London if you are poor to begin with.

Do you agree that if housing is available for them elsewhere in the USA and they are offered that, then the problem is not a lack of roofs though?

I believe homeless people migrate to SF because the climate is gentle all year round. If you offered them affordable and suitable accommodation in the places they came from they'd probably jump at it.

That was a ****ing nightmare.

You sound like the bourgeois in Boudu Saved From Drowning, who takes a tramp in who is uncouth and who spits in his precious collection of Balzac books. LOL

Yes it's unlivable in much cheaper New Mexico lol

Sorry, I'm a philistine, 1932 foreign cinema references might as well be in geostationary orbit, they're that far over my head. But aside from anything else, it was easily a couple of grands' worth of electronics, nothing irreplaceable but also not ideal.

If the hi-fi gear wasn't British he did you a favour.

On second thoughts if he had to listen to you telling him how you're on a huge contractor's rate I don't blame him for taking stuff.

ALL PROPERTY IS THEFT

Hi-fi gear lol. This you?

Damnit. I initially typed "stereo" and then thought no, that sounds ancient. lol

I like your thinking. This is exactly why I'm justified in defrauding anyone who has more money than I do. Especially HMRC, they've got loads.

No, because unlike him you clearly have (more than) enough, you greedy ****er.

I meant crimes of poverty, ldo.

Anyway, I don’t engage in debates about homelessness anymore because it makes me crash out, like every single time. Now I just do the work and don’t bother trying to convince anybody else.

For my edification, at what net worth does stealing from others just because they have more than you go from being OK to being not OK?

One time I was involved in this animal rescue group and there was a constant suspicion of unhoused people with their dogs and accusations of theft, so I sat everybody down and demonstrated through math and data that it was not and could not be true that homeless people steal pets at a higher rate than the general public, and that even if every homeless person stole one animal, which we know they don’t, it would still only account for something like 7% of all thefts, so they needed to stop harassing the unhoused people.

They kicked me out of the group, and then I tried to get them all fired and their funding revoked.

It's one of those things that one instinctively knows when it's right, a bit like a fine pint of real ale.

what made you cap the model at 1 theft per person max, wouldn't a serial animal kidnapper steal as many as he could?

did that possibility even touch your mind?

Professional homeless animal kidnappers itt

Yes, and then hide them all in his basement. Oh, wait.

it's fixable everywhere.

deport all immigrant homeless (make it so that legal residence permits are lost with homelessness), and house your homeless citizens in the cheapest area of the country.

by d2_e4 k

and then torture and kill them, or sell them elsewhere, or eat them.

what do you think people do when they steal a pet? collect them in a private zoo?

why model as they couldn't exist? for all violent crimes, a tiny minority commits most of them, almost always on a serial basis.

why would pet stealing be different?
