General TV Discussion and Thread for Shows Without A Thread Thread
OOTV doesnt like family comedies much huh? Raising Hope and The Middle are two of the best(possibly the best outside of NBC)comedies on tv yet no threads.
Just an observation.
As winter is coming, wifey and I have made a pact to get through several of the "GOAT" status shows that neither of us ever got around to seeing. I'd rather go back and watch some of this stuff than sink into 1-2 season shows of crappier new stuff.
First up... Mad Men. Through 6 episodes of season 1 so far.
It's alright. Kind of just painting the character of Don, mostly, but a lot of the potential conflicts seem pretty evident.
I think the Elizabeth Moss casting was a miss.
Mad Men: through Season 2 finale now.
Finally around mid point season 2, some actual conflict has started to happen. Getting better now. It picked up after those first 6 episodes of season 1, but more is happening now.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Southland is the best cop drama I've ever seen. I had no idea about this show until I came across it on Tubi. It deals with detectives, street cops, public relations, gangs, etc. Every episode is its own story, but at the same time, there are ongoing stories mixed in and some excellent character arcs. It's gritty, immersive and almost hyper-realistic. At times, you'll hate the cops, and other times, you'll empathize with their corruption. For a writer,
Seen a few episodes, but couldnt really get into it. Hard to believe its better than The Shield though?
Wrong thread I know but the movie End of Watch is great and has Southland vibes.
Saw it in it's original run. Special group of actors as well.
It's damn good for sure, but Homicide is probably better (have not watched it since it's original run either)
I haven't seen that show. It's free one of my services, so maybe I'll check a few episodes out tonight.
And yeah, the Southland cast was great. They weren't names I'd given much thought to, but I was impressed. Shawn Hatosy was really good in that show.
I’ve been enjoying Homicide
Silo's new season is so MEH. The book is so good, how are they making such boring episodes.
The casting for the the people in mechanicals is horrible. Meadows is also horrible.
I only enjoy IT's head, sims and the sherrif. Hopefully now that solo is out, he'll be as good as this actor can give.
Yeah I’ve been withholding judgment on the departures from the books but so far season 2 isn’t particularly interesting. I wish Hugh Howey would write more.

So far Silo books, ASOIF, Last kingdom have all been amazing. I dont know what show book i should get into next. You guys recommend the books from 3 body problem?
A Man on the Inside on Netlflix was a really fun watch.
Your wife/girlfriend wil love it, its a very charming show with Ted Danson. Hoping for season 2, lots more potential

I'd suggest The Expanse series and then 3 Body Problem
Got 5 minutes into Star War Skeleton Crew and they are riding a bus in a suburban hellscape and I want to stab my eyes out already

most epic scifi i've ever read (and i read scifi for 25+ years now)
thank me later
ps: i read 3 body problem also, was ok, interestingly i thought the tv show was almost better

foundation is a really good book series, have not seen the show (yet) so no idea on that
should i watch expanse first? its on my list. Or i should read it first?
thx for the recommendations everyone, im saving those books on my kindle.
let me repeat/emphasize:
suneater series will change your life ... it's one of those where you start to read slower bc you don't want it to end.
ps: and when xyz (no spoiler) dies, i cried like a baby for an hour

Read it first.
The TV show is good. I didn't know about the books until after I watched s1, but like many book adaptations, they have to change too much to fit the story into a TV format.
The real problem was that they ended the show 2/3 of the way through the story after having to kill off a central character thanks to alleged bad behavior by the actor.
My issue with reading the Expanse first was I found was the main character, James Holden, was way different to my idea of him from the books. I saw him as an older, kinda grizzled, veteran captain, not the handsome young guy who played him.
Still, show's very good, just took me a while to get used to it.

Suneater crossed my radar recently somewhere, though I can't find or remember where. Going to give it a shot next, assuming 7 checks out to be coming soon. George Martin and Robert Jordan made sure I don't start long series' without an ending in sight anymore. I've started a reread of Stormlight Archive in anticipation of book 5 coming out in a couple of days.

book 6 of suneater just came out, but the author is very consistent, basically 1 new book every 6-9 months (which is kinda amazing, bc every book is like 700-800 pages)
stormlight: started, thought it was great at first, but then kinda slowed down, got confusing, didn't finish
waiting forever now (kinda gave up) on the kingkiller chronicles book 3.
name of the wind
a wise man's fear
is 1+2
also amazing stuff (fantasy)

Yeah, I looked into the kingkiller books this past week and took a hard pass as it looks like he'll never finish the series.

haven't read expanse but the show was amazing
scifi decided to drop it because it costs a lot to make and wasn't a breakout hit but just a regularly watched show (hard for scifi to get large audiences) and bezos loved it so much he bought the rights and continued production for prime - knowing it'd likely be at a loss because he loved it so much
ie it's so good, a billionaire wanted to see it to the end so badly he lost millions to do so
early seasons of expanse way better than latter seasons though, so it is a bit of a letdown, but still very good nonetheless
