Prairiebreeze’s Cannonball (Hit and) Run III – December 1-5, 2024

Welcome to Prairiebreeze’s Cannonball (Hit and) Run III.

Cannonball Run III never actually had that title. It was originally Cannonball Fever, but if you google either of those titles, you discover that it ended up with the title Speed Rush.
If you thought Cannonball Run II was bad. The third edition was worse. If you look at the five reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (0%). Among the reviews:

“This is a movie that lasts 95 minutes and contains one (1) laugh. To save you the admission price, here is the joke: Dickie Smothers: “We’ve got to go to the Dulles airport.” Tommy Smothers: “What are we going to Fresno for?” Dickie: “What makes you think we’re going to Fresno?” Tommy: “Well, you said the dullest airport, didn’t you?”

“The third Cannonball Run film is a mind-numbingly abysmal, cheapo Canadian production starring John Candy and a bunch of C and D listers. Might make a good answer to a trivia question, but this little-known sequel is truly pathetic.”

Hey, I’m Canadian damnit!

Perhaps the most ironic part of this series is that I hate car racing. I really do. I think what F1 has done do LV each year is complete crap. Last year’s TR didn’t talk about it much, but F1 prep last year made getting up and down the strip a giant pain in the ass. Hence, we hit Vegas after F1 and the clown show clears out. If the trees are back at Bellagio, great. But there’s trees everywhere else on this planet. Only one Strip.

Another Trip, Another Dream. And this will NOT be that pathetic. I hope.

Agenda:
December 1 – travel day including a direct flight! LFG! Land at about 17:00, get a decent meal. Figure out where to jam in a short session. Bellagio & Horseshoe would be at/near the top of the list right now.
December 2 – Have a buddy arriving a few hours before MNF – Broncos/Browns. Blech. MGM Grand to start the day, then work our way north on the strip.
December 3 – Wynn/Encore - Event #1 at the WPT - $600 Limit O8 at 11am.
December 4 – Resorts World. Apparently Rodeo World 2024 rolls into town and starts on the 5th? Yee Haw! Bring me some fish riding in on those horses!
December 5 – we will see, travel home (flight out is at 13:00)

Starting Bankroll: $5,200

Home base for this trip: Flamingo (we pick the least expensive place that isn’t an unreasonable trek – but holy crap are hotel rates higher this year – I booked months ago and they’re still double what I paid to stay at Horseshoe last year.) Stop pricing people out of going, LV. Bitcoin ain't going up forever.

Main goals:
WPT: Play an event. Looks like the $600 Limit O8.
Eat better. Specifically, dinners – those were a huge failure last year. Packing more stuff for in between meals AND will have spots scoped even better than last time.
Register for cash games online where possible – and it looks more possible this year - welcome to the 21st century, poker rooms. Play bigger. Less 1/3, more 2/5. Get out of crappy games faster. Actually do some hitting and running. We didn’t get many hits last year.
Will we ever get to Freemont and visit Circa or the Nugget?
Will the Hero finally get himself a Hendon Mob entry? (this is +1200 right now, according to my "friend")
Will Hero's friend abduct him towards Spearmint Rhino? (he says this is +150 right now)
Will there be another knock on my door at 3am? (Oh, god please no. Refer to Cannonball Run I for that story.)

Many questions. Let’s get after it and find out the answers together!

So the decision was made to check out and just get to the airport. Good thing we did. Took 2 hours and 10 minutes to get through security.

I seemed to have contracted the Vegas poker room disease of the year in the lay 48 hours. When I woke up yesterday I was feeling “off”. Had the usual dry sore throat that usually kicks in around day 3, so that wasn’t a big deal.

Got home around 10pm lat night, took a pile of vitamins c, D and zinc and headed off to bed to try and sleep this off. Been mostly sweating and sleeping since.

So 0/1 in tournaments again. Limit O8 tournaments are death by a million cuts if you can’t scoop a pot.

Cash games were good pretty much everywhere. The only truly miserable game I was in was at Bellagio. Winning 6 out of 9 sessions and getting a high hand bonus was a nice add-on.

The Amazon tech bros were everywhere and made the games good. Cowboys were basically nowhere to be found at the tables.

Every casino was warmer than normal. Might just be a weird time of year with temps outside in the 40s at night and in the 60s during the day, but once you were indoors it always felt MUCH warmer.

We profited about $1,500 for the trip which was fantastic when all was said and done.

More to come in a few days once I’m feeling a little less dead than I do right now. Was a great trip all around.

glad you had a good time and thanks for making the trip report. sorry to hear you got sick but happens most of the time

Glad you came back in profit. Sorry to hear you picked up the poker room bug. I got it also when I got back. Sore throat and non stop coughing, a week on and I am still feeling off (not covid though as I did test twice)

I came back with a cough and runny nose, but nothing serious. I also noticed the warmer casinos -- I loved it 😉

I have a cough, runny nose, and sore throat and haven't really left my house since Thanksgiving. It's everywhere. Damned neices and nephews.

As I mentioned, when I got home, I bombed tons of vitamins C & D into me. Started feeling human yesterday and today - decent. I think the temperature fluctuations and the amount of walking I did (sweating when walking indoors, especially at the blast furnace with the name Venetian on the outside) was certainly a factor. Will also plan to vitamin bomb during the trip so that we try to keep it at bay. Obviously lack of rest will always be an issue, but there's not a ton you can do about that.

Mrs Breeze came down with it yesterday.

Going through my notes yesterday - didn't think I ran particularly hot, as I didn't flop a set in NL until we got to MGM (hello 4444!) but I had quads 4 times on this trip - 2 in that PLO session and 1 at MGM, and one at Aria in my last session. Lost count of how many pairs I'd tried to set mine with and missed before that.

I love DBBP's on dealer changes. They're great for shaking/waking up a table. I hope Venetian keeps them. They'll never be in my home casino though.

Guess the algorithm picked up my play on this go around... looked at potential options for next trip (buddy says March, I'm wondering about WSOP in June, WPT in December), there's a lot of properties willing to comp me for 3-5+ nights. Only 3 full days and we racked up 1,600 tier points is all it takes apparently. 😀

Next trip will have a better view than my Flamingo room did... that's for sure.

Horseshoe also has Circuit in the spring.

When I played at Venetian the stupid bomb pot thing only went about 10% of the time. They only played it if half the table agreed. We didn't, much.

Played my first bomb pots a couple weekends ago at a home game. This was dealer's choice of three (?) games.

Had a nice scoop for a significant portion of my winnings in a Omaha BP. Pretty sure I don't understand the strategy, but it was a fun diversion.

If you get the right players at the table to scoop or get scooped, it can make a game amazing in seconds.

And yes at Venetian, half the table has to agree. Had zero issues getting the under 75 demographic to agree.
And for $6? It’s a small price to pay if it makes your game awesome.

I honestly don't understand PLO players who won't play a $10 or $20 bomb pot, especially double-board. You pay that to see a flop, anyway, and if you are any good you just fold (as you normally would) or win at least half. I guess I understand if you are bad at PLO 😉

At the Venetian, they were doing them at the NO LIMIT tables. I basically hate any form of omahahaha. I sure as well don't want to be forced into playing it with involuntary pip.

at Bellagio they had to be the same game. so bomb pot for the 2/5 game had to be holdem

I hate Hold'em bomb pots

Once you play PLO bomb pots, Hold'Em bomb pots seem hella lame.

Yeah... for $6 pre. Good news is that they're optional. But it does make it easy to find out who the nits are.

All they have to do is ask me and I'll tell them.

But until my year-long cold streak ends I'll look like a nit no matter what.
