Cheerful? It's crushing that economic war was declared on us. Nobody wanted that (except maybe you it seems?) I'm glad Canada responded with a strong response and Mexico followed suit. We don't know how much this will or will not have played a role in the pauses for Mexico and Canada, but it stands to reason that us acting in concert was better than not.

And for the record so you can stop making this argument, I am in favor of any American company operating in Canada including but not limited to banks, telecommunications, airlines, etc.

Canada is not sending any troops.... it pledged 20k border agents. we already have 17k. its a 200million investment. its nothing. it was a pr move

Well, he had 40+ of that at least back in mid-December, and likely could've gotten to 49 or 50 by discussing it like an adult.
So in the end, Trump creates a bunch of turmoil to get what he could've gotten less publicly, but the public show is what he wanted. Is that a win or a loss? No idea. Gets to show his enemies that he'll even **** with his allies so watch out, while showing his allies how he'll throw them under the bus to do so. Hard to say whether that's a positive or a negative IMO.
As for Trudeau, he did fine. Stood up to Trump, got out of this nonsense without too much pain (depending on what's coming in 30 days), and I'm not sure it would've been much different with anyone else in the same position. Yeah, he had to spend some of our money employing some more people on a priority that wasn't high on his list. Makes the leader of our greatest ally happy, might be a cheap price to pay, especially since we're just counting down JT's days at this point and this issue is pushed until we're on the verge of new leadership, and Trump's impression of how he can handle JT will be irrelevant.

Lol, the revisionism starting quick eh? Trump declared economic war on us. You can't be mad I called it exactly what it was. The anemic 1% of fentanyl that crosses our 8km unsecured border that has billions of goods flowing over it every day won't be stopped by the already pledged 1.3 billion or most of the already there border guards etc doing some photo opp marches. It was always a fake problem, and Trudeau has done an excellent job of threading that needle of pretending to take the excuse seriously and threatening enough pain in retaliation that - for now - crisis averted.

I agree. I've never seen Canadian so unanimously (well, other than shifty) aghast in horror at what was being threatened against us, and I think there is a vibe shift or whatever in how Canadians perceive the US that won't be easily forgotten.
