There was always the realistic threat that Putin would go nuclear as a means of saving face if he started to lose the war, and so at least some degree of caution was warranted.

We let Ukraine down from before the invasion. It's not hindsight at all. It obviuously very likely that putin was going invade and obviosuly very likely that it would end badly for Ukraine.

I was an active participant in the ukraine thread. The only suprise was russia was doing so badly - the expectation was worse for ukraine - this is the good outcome!

and the only real debate was with those who throught this was brilliant because it was hurting russia so much.

For those who claim hindsight, how did you imagine this was going to go for ukraine?

Exactly. Unlike all of you, I am old enough to remember when everyone thought Russia would quickly win, set up a puppet govt, the West would sanction Russia, and the Zelensky govt would go into exile.

European leaders were probably figuring that by now (3 years in) the West would be in the process of normalizing relations with Russia, and natural gas would be pouring in through Nordstream I and II.

I wasn't born obviously but I do remember yelling from the womb about the west be8ng ok with letting that happen. Something about the usa making clear they would no everything to stop it short of doing anything at all.

No, not really. They ride bikes on pavements and blatantly grab phones out of people's hands while the owners are reading their incredibly important social media.

Right, so it's the victim's fault that they got their phone took and if they're stupid enough to let it happen then the thief should absolutely be able to take it straight home, put their feet up and relax.

In all seriousness, I would think this is being introduced because (particularly in London) mobile phone thefts are at horrific levels. By the time a warrant has been obtained and executed, it's too late. Having a policy where "tactical contact" with mopeds hasn't made much of a difference. Something new has to be tried, this makes sense, and I'm sure police won't take doors off of hinges on the say so of one person showing a dot on a map. There will be some quick time checks, there has to be because the dot on the map might not be 100% accurate. Police will check a couple of addresses either side and when one of those addresses comes back as being the home of someone known for being a thief, that'll be the door that gets opened. It just removes the bureaucratic process of applying for a warrant, finding a judge with time to sign it and then getting resources together. The reality is that when presented with information that a stolen phone is likely to be at a particular address, there isn't a judge in the land that won't sign it, so why bother with the added layer of bureaucracy? Just get it done.

I would agree that it needs close monitoring, if it only proves successful 10% of the time then the policy might need reviewing. It's right though, that police are enabled to take advantage of how modern technology and data works within the community.

Agree. I'd be alright with him just cutting Trump out as he's clearly a Russian asset now, but that could be just some childish need to get approval from Putin that he could be jedi mind-tricked out of, so credit for keep trying to keep the man-child into the loop, he does hold the purse-strings for America.

So many hard questions to address though. Not just for the immediate Ukraine situation but for how this plays into the future. UK in particular is going to have to try to ride two horses or jump decisively one way or the other. Europe has to take control of it's own defense and currently they need us badly. If it succeeds though, it will inevitably become increasingly an EU force (unless the EU disintegrates) with way less dependency on us. It's also going to be impossible to seperate the military from AI/Science/Tech etc.

I come to me my pre-brexit position where we need to be part of the EU because we (and the rest of Europe) need to be able to stand up for ourselves on geopolitical trade/defense/etc. The only 'self' that makes sense imo is the EU in some form.
