Talk About Movies: Part 4

It's difficult for me to pick a favorite Mann film because, for me, they all seem to bubble to roughly the same level of greatness... which is really great.
I love his work and command of screen tension when I watch his films and you have to love a director that actually does in practical effects what the character in his films is supposed to be doing... like burn a hole thru a bank vault with a incendiary rod... why fake it when you can just film people actually doing it.
Where I get a small level of disappointment is in his endings... bad people, should many times, get away with bad things, specially if they are accomplished. He takes a long time building his protagonists only to slam them to the ground at the end of a film.
I've also never seen last of the mohawks...

I mean you have to watch Mohicans. It’s not true to the novel but:

Absolutely unreal cinematography (how does it look so green?), DDL & Stowe light it on fire, and about the best last 30 mins of any movie period

i've often thought that a last of the mohicans reboot directed by michael bay would be peak cinema

The last twenty minutes of Heat are ungreat but the studio I’m sure insisted on a grand finale between teh Corleones.

IRL Neal would’ve been on the plane to Australia (alone)and Hanna would’ve tracked down and whacked Manitou out of both principle and frustration. BTW the bad guy Hanna deals with in the book Heat 2 is a top shelf fictional psycho. It’s both a prequel & sequel to the movie.

they will tell you that somehow he had been softened by the influence of love... I say BULLSHYTE!

Mickey 17 throws loads of ideas at the screen and fails to fully develop any of them. Even the central concept of cloning is unfinished. Seemingly important characters are introduced only to be abandoned.

A lot of the performances feel confused. Robert Pattinson's Mickey 17 is annoyingly whiny. Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette don't quite seem to know what they're doing, which isn't surprising because their characters are as much of mishmash as the story.

I still kinda enjoyed the film despite its many flaws. If only it was more focused instead of being so disjointed.

I just found an almost 5 hour documentary on the making of Aliens from last year, called "Aliens Expanded."

I know what I'm doing the rest of the day.

There are Bond IP's in development for both M and Moneypenny.

Aliens Expanded was fantastic. the 5 hours flew by. Loved how so many of the supporting cast were featured.

The Companion could be an extended episode of Black Mirror. It's well executed if not wholly original. Sophie Thatcher is a star in the making.

kept hearing how great Heart Eyes was. Spoiler: it wasn't. It tried to romantic, scary, and funny all at once and failed at all three.
It's like if Disney Channel made a slasher pic.

so tired of modern movies made by people whose sole experience in life seems to be watching other movies. Movies whose sole purpose is aping other, better movies. Sloppy writing thinking it's cleaver. That's what Heart Eyes is.

Overheard Michael Rosenbaum talking about it with Bill Reiser on Rosenbaum's podcast. I'll have to check it out.

The Wild Robot - I had no idea what to expect going in, but I was blown away!A robot arrives in a remote part of the planet, it's never said out loud, but much like Flow, it feels like there was a worldwide disaster that wiped out much of the human race and animals are left to reclaim the land. The robot is played by Lupita Nyong'o who finds the perfect balance of playing a robot who becomes self aware and starts to develop feelings for animals, even if it's not in her programming. She finds a lame duck, err goose to take care of and that story arc is deeply moving and inspirational. I had a full on ugly cry or two or three. I'm shocked by how real it felt. The movie doesn't shy away from the full circle of life, and the filmmakers handle it with so much care and compassion. It's on Prime Video in Canada, I highly recommend it.

saw companion thought it was great . that dude was universally stupid but otherwise well done..

Saw Anora won a bunch of awards.. I really liked it ,but liked Florida project more.. why that not win anything ?

fun fact about chinese people, before watching a movie, they'll read a very detailed synopsis on it to see if it's the kind of thing they want to watch

no concept at all of spoilers or just enjoying the twists and turns

reminds me of the time i dvr'd the usa/canada gold medal olympic hockey game in 2010 while i was at work

i made a big deal to my gf how much this game meant to me, how much i couldn't wait to watch it once i got home from work and how i was going to spend all day avoiding anything online that may mention the result

she then texts me that day while i'm at work "wow i'm so happy for you, that game you're going to watch tonight is really good, canada wins in overtime"

worst part is usa is losing 2-1 for the entire 3rd period and score with seconds left to tie it - so that tension was all lost, just watched that 3rd period like a zombie, already knowing we would get that needed goal only to find heartbreak later

no joy, just bitter sadness

and she thought she was giving me info i would appreciate so i could look forward to all that drama knowing what would happen

knowing before hand has no affect on my enjoyment.
