My mom was protestant and my dad was the guilt stricken raised catholic guy who wanted his children exposed to religious education so it wasn't a huge part of our life. More used as a moralistic compass.
We occasionally skipped Sunday mass and never went to anything extra beyond the occasional Christmas mass (that I can remember)
Around the the time the pedophilia scandal hit (my young teens) we kinda phased out.
All that to say, we weren't the most strict of Catholic followers and by the time I was actually remembering things we were on the outs so it somewhat tracks. I can't remember kids at school doing it either which you would generally think they'd be doing in Oklahoma, though.

Yeah. In NYC, it is a very, very common thing to see on Ash Wednesday. As far as I know, it is almost exclusively a Catholic ritual.

Are you saying that secular people don't make decisions based on underlying beliefs? Or discriminatory ones? Because they do. Any time a politician or judge makes a decision, they're rank ordering things in terms of importance, whether it's religious or not.
There are differing interpretations of constitutional law (textualism vs originalism, for example) that have nothing to do with religion, yet a judge may fundamentally believe that one holds more weight than the other, because of their own philosophy, and make decisions based on that. Subjectivity is never a non factor. For anyone.

Well, Amy Coney Barrett thinks she should be recused from deciding on death penalty cases because it conflicts with her faith. She can't, in good conscience, sentence someone to death, and, at the same time, she knows that some of those decisions would go against constitutional law, so she wants to opt out. Find me a pro-choice Democrat that wants to give up their vote because the dogma of a woman's "right to choose" personally outweighs all other legal arguments.
Anyway, separation of church and state is essentially about two institutions telling each other what to do, not about whether or not religious people are allowed to have a voice.
