if it was instruments plural I'd think he was saying all those words except bell+piano, but with it singular, any of those could be danger
it could be the non-instrument, non-play words, so sound/theater/plastic that have more iffy/2step connections
or one of these words could be assassin and he's setting us up for a 7 clue next round that hits the assassin so clearing the way

My inclination is similar to your last one: He's getting a sticking point over with. Because of how their last clue went, he feels like he has the runway to do something conservative. So my inclination is to guess conservatively in line with that sort of strategy.
I think plastic is a stretch, likewise march for marching band, but I could see going play, sound, theater.
i'm worried that play/sound are too connected, but theater could be an ok guess; can also make a list including play/sound so we can pick it up later if he wanted those

I think when it keeps us even, your reasoning makes sense. Trust IBD. In theory a 4 clue could get them clued 9, but then they can't GUESS 6.
